The Police Blotter, Feb. 15, 2009

Police responded to a bomb threat at Anacortes High School last week after someone found a note threatening a bomb. A high school official advised the police that a student had found a handwritten bomb threat note on a toilet paper dispenser in a boy’s bathroom. School officials and police searched the school, but no suspicious items were found. They decided that an evacuation of the school was not necessary.

Friday, Feb. 6

An officer stopped a car in the 1600 block of Q Avenue after it had been speeding on R Avenue.  The driver was identified as a 20-year-old Anacortes man.  The officer smelled the odor of intoxicants on the driver and observed the driver remove a baggy from a backpack that appeared to contain suspected drug residue.  The driver reluctantly gave the baggy to the officer and said it had contained marijuana.  The driver was placed under arrest for investigation of possession of drug paraphernalia and he told the officer there was a marijuana smoking pipe in his backpack inside of the vehicle.  The pipe was located and found to contain chunky bits of marijuana and it was seized as evidence.  The officer continued to small intoxicants and the driver admitted that he had drunk two beers at a local park earlier.  After performing poorly on a couple of field sobriety tests, the driver was also informed he was under arrest for drunk driving.  The driver later provided breath samples that were over the limit for someone under 21 years old.  The driver was cited and released for DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana. 

Saturday, Feb. 7

Officers contacted the driver of a vehicle they had watched pull into a store parking lot in the 3100 block of Commercial Avenue after it had been reported the driver was possibly intoxicated.  Officers had also seen the car’s tires skid on the roadway near 32nd Street prior to pulling into the lot.  The driver was identified as an 18-year-old Anacortes man whose driving status was suspended for a previous DUI arrest.  The driver was taken into custody for the license offense and the officer could then smell intoxicants on the driver and see his eyes were watery and movements sluggish.  The driver denied drinking but was advised he was also under arrest for DUI.  While being processed, the driver admitted to drinking “three or four” beers and he provided breath samples that were over the legal limit for an adult and over five times the limit for someone under 21 years old.  He was then booked into jail.  An 18-year-old Anacortes man who was a passenger in the car was cited and released for underage drinking after he showed signs of alcohol consumption.  It was the passenger’s sixth arrest for underage drinking. 

Unknown burglars broke an exterior window on a youth activities building in the 2400 block of J Avenue to gain entry.  Once inside, the burglars forced open two interior office doors and stole a desk top computer, a DVD player, a cell phone, and the key to a vehicle.  The value of the stolen items was approximately $500.  The phone was located a short time later lying on the ground in front of the building, but the other items are still missing. 

Two Anacortes boys, One 14 and one 15, were detained by employees of a restaurant in the 500 block of Commercial Avenue after they had initially left the business without paying for approximately five dollars in beverages.  The boys declined the opportunity to pay for the drinks and the police were summoned.  The boys indicated that they knew they should have paid for the items before leaving.  Both boys were referred to juvenile court on theft charges.

Sunday, Feb. 8

An officer stopped a car in the 3700 block of Oakes Avenue after observing it roll through a stop sign, speed, and swerve within it’s lane of travel.  The driver was identified as a 28-year-old Anacortes woman who said she was coming from a downtown bar.  The driver smelled of intoxicants and said that she had “one” beer and that she was driving because her passenger/boyfriend had been drinking.  She agreed to perform some field sobriety tests on which she preformed poorly.  She was placed under arrest for drunk driving and transported to the police station for processing.  The woman declined to take the breath test.  She was cited for DUI and then released. 

The daughter of a 41-year-old Anacortes woman called 911 to report that her mother was drinking and throwing things around their apartment in the 1100 block of 27th Ct.  Officers spoke with the mother who said that she had been venting her frustration over being unable to obtain medication for various health problems.  The woman admitted that’s she did not control her anger very well, but it was determined that no crime had occurred.  She was advised of some anger control techniques. 

Four exterior windows were broken out on a church located in the 12,000 block of Summit Park Road with the repair costs estimated at approximately $750.  It appeared from tire tracks that an unknown vehicle had spun circles in the gravel causing the rocks to strike the windows and break the glass.  The pastor of the church said that similar incidents of glass breakage had occurred in the past. 

Monday, Feb. 9

A 34-year-old Anacortes woman was reported missing by a family member after she had gone out two nights earlier and not returned.  The woman was reported to be in good spirits.  Two days later the woman called the police and said that she had heard she had been reported as a missing person.  An officer contacted the woman at her home and confirmed that she was fine.  

A resident of the 2100 block of 9th Street reported that someone had entered an unlocked utility shed on the property and stole a chain saw, a weed eater, an electrical generator, a single burner range, two propane torches, a bb gun and bb’s, a garbage can, and assorted other smaller items.  Values of the stolen items were unknown at the time the report was taken. 

A 17-year-old girl residing with a family on 12th Street was suspected of fraudulently completing numerous credit card applications using the identities of the family she was living with.  The family became suspicious after receiving several credit card denial notices for cards they had not applied for.  An officer interviewed the girl who admitted to completing the applications and knowing that her actions were wrong.  The girl faces possible criminal charges for identity theft.  

An Anacortes woman went to the Police Department to report that she had been assaulted by her 28-year-old husband at their apartment in the 500 block of 4th Street.  The woman reported that they had been having marital problems for several months and that she had returned home a few nights earlier and confronted her husband about an issue that bothered her.  The woman said that her husband became upset and started pushing her out the front door and which time she fell face first onto the floor.  The woman said that when she got outside she discovered her mouth was bloody and she had a chipped tooth.  The woman also mentioned previous incidents of domestic violence when her husband has assaulted her, but that she had not reported to police.  The husband later came to the police station and admitted to an officer that he had been physically abusive to his wife in the past and that he had pushed her causing her to fall and injure her mouth.  The man said that he was seeking help for his anger problems and that he did not want to hurt his wife.  He was then cited for domestic violence assault.    

Wednesday, Feb. 11

Officers spoke with a 15-year-old Anacortes boy after a neighbor reported that she could hear loud noises and things being thrown around inside the boy’s apartment in the 1000 block of 24th Street.  Officers then spoke with the boy’s mother who said that her son was upset because he had been asked to gather things needed for a field trip.  Officers spoke with the boy who had been throwing things around in his room and he said that he was having a “bad day.”  The boy was informed he needed to calm down or risk being arrested which would really be a bad day.  The boy agreed and apologized to his mother. 

Thursday, Feb. 12

A 15-year-old Anacortes boy was taken into custody at his residence in the 800 block of 29th Street as he had a warrant for his arrest regarding a missed court date for a previous residential burglary charge.  The boy was booked into juvenile detention. 

A woman reported seeing a suspicious man jump over the security fence from the inside of a boat storage yard near the 2800 block of T Avenue the previous evening.  The woman reported the man joined three other men near the fence who then sped away in a car when she moved closer to try and obtain the license number.  The woman said that all of the men appeared to be in their 20’s and were wearing hooded sweatshirts and dark pants.  The woman said she put off reporting the suspicious activity until the next day.  An officer later checked the boat storage yard with employees who said that everything appeared to be in order. 

The mother of a 15-year-old boy reported that her son had been attacked the previous evening by an unknown individual in an alleyway in the 2400 block of Commercial Avenue while the boy was walking home.  The woman reported that her son had been drinking and that he had received several minor lacerations to his chest during the attack.  An officer spoke with the boy and observed superficial marks on the boy’s chest and arm.  The scratches were consistent with being made by a razor or box cutter.  The boy claimed he had said something to the unknown man who had taken offense to the comment and then attacked him with what he believed to be a razor.  The shirt the boy had been wearing at the time showed no sign of being slashed or cut.  Both the boy and his mother declined to have the boy examined at the hospital.  The boy was questioned about having cut himself, but he denied doing so.  The incident is under further investigation.
