The Police Blotter

An engaged couple living in the 4500 block of Kingsway got into an argument after disagreeing about how Aretha Franklin sang during the President’s inauguration. Both persons had been drinking, but officers determined that no actual crime had occurred. The man agreed to spend the night on his boat for a cooling down period.

Fri., Jan. 16, 2009

An employee of the Washington State Ferry system reported that his 2006 Toyota Scion had been struck in the right rear bumper and quarter panel while it had been parked in the employee lot near the main ferry terminal building.  The victim said that he found light colored paint transfer on his car and later checked security camera video and saw a light colored car appear to strike his car and then leave the lot. The victim said that he believed that the other car might have been driven by another ferry system employee and that he was going to try and contact the other man to work it out between them prior to having further police involvement.      

The father of an eight-year-old girl requested police assistance in searching for his daughter after she got off the school bus but failed to make it inside of her home in the 2000 block of Commercial Avenue.  The father said that the bus driver confirmed that the girl had walked to her front door, but that she stopped and then walked away up the street.  Approximately an hour later, an employee of a grocery store in the 900 block of 11th Street reported that the girl was at the store.  The girl was retrieved by an officer and reunited with her family.  She was unharmed.   

Sat., Jan. 17, 2009

A resident of the 1000 block of 23rd Street reported that he had been awakened in the middle of the night by his dog barking.  The man checked his house and saw a man running out of his kitchen carrying a flat panel television that had been on the kitchen counter.  The suspect also reportedly broke a section of fencing during his flight from the house.  The suspect was described as a being a tall slender male wearing dark clothing.  A check of the area for the suspect was unsuccessful. 

The mother of an Anacortes Middle School student reported that her son’s BMX style bike had been stolen from the school a few days earlier.  The bike was believed to have been unlocked and it was valued at $200.   

A 16-year-old boy reported that he had lost his wallet while he had been walking on Commercial Avenue between 24th and 29th Streets.  The wallet contained the teen’s driver’s license, an ATM card, and approximately $110 in cash.   

Sun., Jan. 18, 2009

A 23-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after being asked to leave a bar in the 300 block of Commercial Avenue.  An officer saw the man outside cursing loudly at the bar’s bouncer and trying to push his way back towards the front door of the bar.  The man began to run down an alley when he saw the officer.  After a short foot pursuit, the man was caught with assistance from the bouncer.  The man struggled with officers as they attempted to handcuff him and he refused to obey verbal commands to stop resisting.  The man allegedly smelled strongly of intoxicants and marijuana and he was placed under arrest.  It was learned that he also had three outstanding warrants for his arrest.  The bar’s staff reported that the man had yelled at other bar patrons, jumped on top of the bar, and yelled obscenities before being directed to leave.  The man was transported to the county jail where the officer discovered that the man had vomited on himself.  He was booked on the warrants and cited for the disorderly conduct and resisting offenses.        

Mon., Jan. 19, 2009

Officers responded to the report of a domestic disturbance at a house in the 2300 block of 23rd Street after a 15-year-old girl reported that her 18-year-old brother was stealing things and pushing their mother around.  The mother denied that any physical assault had occurred and the son showed officers two items that he said he had not stolen.  It was determined that no crime had occurred and the son left the house for the afternoon.        

Tues., Jan. 20, 2009

A resident of the 1000 block of 17th Street discovered that someone had stolen two tires and wheels from his Dodge Durango during the night.  The victim said that the vehicle had been parked curbside in front of the house and that it did not appear that the vehicle had been entered.  The estimated value of the stolen items was $500.     

Officers contacted an 18-year-old Anacortes man walking on Commercial Avenue after an employee reported that the man had attempted to shoplift two bottles of wine from a store in the 900 block of 11th Street.  The man allegedly had tried to walk out of the store without paying for the wine before being confronted by the employee.  The man admitted to officers that he had tried to steal the wine because he was “not thinking.”  The man also smelled of intoxicants and he admitted to having “three” drinks earlier.  He provided a portable breath test that confirmed his alcohol consumption.  The man was cited and released for Criminal Attempt and underage drinking.      

Wed., Jan. 21, 2009

The manager of a business in the 1000 block of 24th Street reported that she and a co-employee had arrived at work and discovered that $300 in daily “start-up” cash for the till was missing from its normal location.  Entry into the building was believed to have been made through an unlocked door.  The manager reported that there had been a recent history of daily shortages from the till and the matter is under investigation.        

A maintenance employee and a security company employee entered an apartment in the 700 block of Q Avenue while performing scheduled sprinkler system inspections.  The tenant, a 73-year-old woman, allegedly was surprised by the entry of the men and pointed a pistol at the maintenance employee.  The maintenance man reported that all of the tenants had been notified to vacate their apartments during the inspections and that he had knocked on the door and received no response before using his pass key to enter the apartment.  He said that he and the other man then left after the woman ordered them to leave.  The woman said that she was aware of the inspection but that she was unaware that the workers would have to enter her apartment to perform the task and that she had no intention of vacating.  She denied that anyone had knocked on her door and said that she was surprised when the men entered.  She admitted to pointing her gun at one of the men, but she said that she had lowered the weapon when she recognized the maintenance worker.  It was determined that no crime had occurred and all three involved people were informed that the incident would be documented. 

A resident of the 800 block of 5th Street reported that he had ordered a wireless headset for his phone and that a delivery company confirmed they had delivered the item to his house.  The man said that he had paid $127 for the item, but that he had never received it.  The shipping company was conducting their own investigation. 

A Stanwood woman reported that she had left her car parked overnight at her place of employment in the 12600 block of Thompson Road.  The next day she discovered that her vehicle had been prowled, although there was no sign of forced entry.  Taken from the car were an iPod Nano, a Sony digital camera, W-2 forms for the woman and her husband, and a tote containing miscellaneous paperwork.  The vehicle’s registration form was also stolen.  The suspect(s) are unknown at this time.    

Officers responded to a residence in the 1800 block of Piper Circle regarding children calling 911 to report their 39-year-old step-father had broken a window to get inside.  The man was gone when officers arrived, but they spoke with his wife who said that she and her husband were having marriage issues and that he was heading to Alaska.  The man was located a short distance away and taken into custody for domestic violence malicious mischief.  The man admitted he had thrown a cooler at the window breaking the glass, but that he had drunk too much and didn’t remember much else.  He did express his displeasure for getting arrested for breaking his own window.  He was booked into jail.

An officer stopped a car in the 1000 block of Commercial Avenue for having non-functioning taillights.  The driver was identified as an 18-year-old Anacortes man and the officer could smell the odor of burnt marijuana from inside of the car.  After initially denying that he had smoked marijuana, the man admitted that he had just bought a $20 bag of marijuana and had been smoking it.  The officer located a small amount of marijuana and a smoking pipe that was still warm inside of the car.  The man was cited and released for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. 

Thurs., Jan. 22, 2009

Officers arrested a 46-year-old man at his apartment in the 800 block of Commercial Avenue due to him having a warrant for his arrest out of the Department of Corrections for escape from community custody.  The man was released to Department of Corrections officers for transport to a corrections facility. 

A High School official reported seeing a 17-year-old student jump over a school fence and then return to the school a short time later.  School protocol allowed the boy to be searched and the school official located a small bag of suspected marijuana on the boy.  An officer then spoke with the boy who admitted that he had brought the marijuana to school after purchasing it a few days earlier.  The boy was informed that he would be referred to juvenile court for possession of marijuana. 

The Anacortes Police Department was notified by the Department of Corrections that a 29-year-old Level 1 sex offender was scheduled to be released from prison at the end of February.  The man plans to live with his stepmother on Devonshire Drive upon his release.  At that time, the man will be monitored by law enforcement as a registered sex offender. 

Officers responded to an apartment in the 1300 block of O Avenue regarding a woman calling 911 and screaming that her boyfriend had hit her and thrown her down.  When officers arrived, the man had already fled and they observed that the woman had a cut lip and blood on her shirt.  The woman said that the man became enraged when she asked him to return the key to her apartment due to him allegedly having alcohol and drug issues.  Officers checked the area extensively for the man with no success.  He later telephoned the woman and said that he would “not be found.”  The man was later issued a court summons for domestic violence assault.     

Fri., Jan. 23, 2009

A 40-year-old woman was contacted at her residence in the 900 block of 25th Street after it was reported that she had been punched several times by her 47-year-old boyfriend.  The woman said that she had left the residence earlier because the man had been drinking.  She reported that when she returned home, the man charged out of their bedroom, grabbed her by the hair and threw her down, and then punched her in the face several times.  The man then fled the house after another roommate went to call the police.  The woman’s head and face were swollen and she had scratches on her neck and chin.  The man was found hiding in an attached garage.  He denied hitting the woman and said that she had slapped him.  He was booked into jail for domestic violence assault.
