Police Blotter, December 30, 2022 - January 5, 2023

A woman advised that she had just returned from a 12-day vacation and found her house broken into and rummaged through. An officer responded and found that the outer pane of glass of the home’s backdoor had been shattered and was scattered on the doormat. The entire window was forced out of place to allow access to the doorknob. The house was in general disarray with lots of items stacked on the floor. There was nothing obviously missing. The officer provided a case number and told the homeowner to call back if she discovers anything missing. There are no known suspects.

Dispatch was contacted by a 78-year-old Anacortes woman regarding a cold burglary that had occurred at her residence in the 1100 block of 10th Street. The thefts occurred in a detached garage on the property, and happened sometime overnight. The suspect had apparently used a pry tool to enter the structure. An officer inspected the door to the garage and checked the area for surveillance. A leaf blower, two batteries and a charger were missing.

An 86-year-old Anacortes man called to report his handgun had been stolen. He said he had placed it in a different location than usual and now could not find it. Later that day, the man called and said he had located the firearm in the place where he thought it originally was after checking again.

A supervisor with the Washington State Ferry Terminal reported 20 car tires had been left in their dumpster. She stated that their recycling service had notified them of the tires being left in the dumpster. The supervisor is working on obtaining surveillance footage.

There was a report of CPR in progress in the 1400 block of 38th Street. Upon arrival, officers located the 47-year-old man and found him to be conscious and breathing. Aid arrived on scene and took over the call.

Dispatch advised that a woman was calling to report that her neighbor’s vehicle was vandalized the previous night in the 2300 block of 33rd Street. She stated that the window was shattered and that she did not have her neighbor’s information. An officer responded and noted that the driver’s side mirror appeared to have been struck and broken. There was no other visible damage to the vehicle. The officer left contact information and a case number on the vehicle and at the residence door.

The reporting party was concerned that a “million-dollar bill” had been left on a picnic table with a rock on top and it might have drugs in it. An officer collected the bill from one of the picnic tables at Seafarers’ Memorial Park, noting that it was not legal tender and had a printed religious message on one side. There was no evidence that the item had drugs in it, and it was properly disposed of.

An officer was dispatched to a business in the 1000 block of 32nd Street in reference to a vehicle prowl that had occurred overnight. An officer spoke with the business owner, who advised that he had discovered lights and equipment taken from damaged vehicles on the property. An officer documented the thefts and asked the business owner to compile a list of stolen items.

An officer was dispatched to a reported assault at an Anacortes business. The reporting party stated that he and his wife had entered the store and an altercation had occurred in which a disagreement with an employee had escalated, with the employee allegedly yelling obscenities and eventually touching the man’s chest and shoulder as they were exiting the business. The man stated that he did not wish to pursue charges. An officer observed the interaction on video taken via the woman’s cell phone. The officer contacted the employee, who stated that there had been an altercation with some rude customers and that he wanted them trespassed. An officer completed the trespass forms and explained them to the man and his wife.

There was a report of a cold malicious mischief issue in the 3800 block of H Avenue in which someone had lit off fireworks inside the porta-potty on-site. The officer documented the incident and logged three photographs from the reporting party.

Wednesday, January 4, 2023

An officer was dispatched to the area of 18th Street and K Avenue for a reported chihuahua running at large. The officer located the dog running between houses. The officer encountered a man chasing the dog and asked him to stop, as the dog would continue running away, and the man said, “I’ve got this handled,” and said the dog was not his. The officer eventually contacted the man, who advised that it was an ongoing issue. The officer later contacted the owner of the chihuahua, who advised that she had put him back inside her house. She said the dog had jumped over the fence using a pile of objects, and that she had since moved the items to prevent further escape.

An Anacortes man called to complain that there seemed to be no APD response to the large amount of fireworks being set off at Anacortes High School on New Year’s Eve, though he advised that he had not called about the issue because he believed that the amount of fireworks set off was so large that he didn’t think a call was necessary to generate a police response. He was advised to call during an incident in the future.
