Police Blotter, Jan. 18 - 23, 2014

A local resident called Wednesday to report that she had ordered take out food from a restaurant in Anacortes and that the credit card number that she had provided had later been used to make some unauthorized online purchases. Further, she had found another person that had experienced the same problem recently when ordering from the same restaurant,  In both cases the victims had been refunded their money by their banks, but the matter is currently under investigation so that the person perpetrating the fraud can be identified.

Here are some of the other cases Anacortes Police worked on this week.

Saturday, Jan. 18

4:50 pm.  An Officer stopped a car after observing it run a red light at Highway 20 and Reservation Road.  The driver’s license was suspended due to unpaid tickets.  He was arrested and issued a citation for driving on a suspended license. After being issued a court date, the driver was released and told not to drive the vehicle any further. He agreed to arrange for a licensed driver to come and get the vehicle.

Sunday, Jan. 19

12:54 am.  Two arrests were made following a fight that broke out amongst several individuals behind a downtown bar just before 1:00 AM.  As a result of the fight one man was transported to Island Hospital after he was reportedly knocked unconscious. Officers charged a 28-year-old Anacortes man with Assault and a 24-year-old Anacortes man with Obstructing a Public officer.

3:05 am.  Officer’s responded to the report of a motor vehicle accident in the 3900 blk of West 6th Street just after 3:00 AM.  They discovered that a parked van had been struck by another vehicle, which had fled the scene. The van was pushed almost 30 feet by the suspect vehicle, which was a BMW, based upon parts left behind at the scene of the crash.  An unoccupied BMW with extensive damage was found parked a few blocks away and officers were able to identify it as the vehicle that fled from the crash.  The investigation as to who was driving the vehicle continues, but a strong suspect has been identified.

1:58 pm.  A resident on 29th Street called to report that two of his car tires had their sidewalls punctured over night.  

5:50 pm.  An Officer on recognized a 24-year-old Anacortes man in the 300 blk of O Ave that she knew had warrants out for his arrest.  She and a Sergeant contacted the man and took him in to custody.  He was searched following his arrest and a cut straw with some suspected methamphetamine was found in the man’s pant’s pocket.  Upon being asked about the suspected drugs the man replied that the pants he was wearing didn’t really belong to him and he had just picked them up a day ago.  The suspected drugs have been sent to the Washington State Crime Lab for examination.  The suspect was told that charges would be filed if a positive drug test came back from the lab. Due to jail overcrowding he could not be booked on his warrants, so he was given new court dates and released.

8:39 pm.  After getting a report of a motor vehicle accident, Officers arrived in the 3400 Blk of W. 3rd Street to find a car upside down in the roadway.  Investigation revealed that a 43-year-old Anacortes woman had lost control of her Lexus sedan and struck two  parked BMW’s on the side of the road.  The collision caused her car her to roll over as it glanced off the parked cars.  The driver, who was alone, suffered no major injuries. There were no signs of intoxication.

Monday, Jan. 20

9:52 pm.  A 33-year-old Anacortes man experiencing some mental health issues jumped through a glass window in order to get out of a house on 35th Street.  Family members called 911 and Police Officers and an ambulance crew soon arrived.  Fortunately, the man was not seriously hurt in going through the window.  Still, he was transported to Island Hospital for further evaluation.

11:12 pm.  As a car passed by, an alert Anacortes Officer she recognized the driver as a woman wanted for questioning by the Sedro-Woolley Police Department.  She also suspected that one of several men in the car was the woman’s boyfriend, who was also wanted for questioning. The vehicle came to a stop in the 800 blk of 26th Street and everyone appeared to get out and go in to a nearby house.  Upon checking the parked vehicle, Officers noted that the woman who had been driving was now hiding in the vehicle under a blanket.  They had her step out of the vehicle and she had no good explanation for hiding under the blanket.  She was not under arrest, so she left and walked in to the same home that the others had gone in to earlier.  Based upon the odd behavior, some visible drug paraphernalia in the car, and the woman’s prior drug history, a drug K9 was called to the scene.  The dog indicated that drugs were present and the car was seized as evidence and taken to the police department. The next day a search warrant was granted and the car was searched.  Inside the vehicle Officers found drugs, but they also found computers and other items taken in a residential burglary in Whatcom County.  The woman and the other men in the vehicle are now being investigated for their role in the possession of stolen property from the Whatcom County crime.

Wednesday, Jan. 22

5:52 pm.  An Anacortes resident reported that several tools had been taken from his boat, which is in a slip in a local marina. There are two suspects in the theft, one of whom has been identified.  The theft investigation continues.

8:14 pm.  Responding to citizen calls about a loud argument, Officers found a couple that had been physically fighting near 12th St and B Ave.  Investigation at the scene made it clear that a woman had lashed out at her boyfriend, tearing his shirt and scratching him.  The intoxicated, 37-year-old Anacortes woman was taken in to custody for Domestic Violence – Assault.  She was transported and booked in to the Skagit County Jail.
