Police Blotter, Jan. 11 - 16, 2014

A woman came in to the police department on Monday, Jan. 13, to report that she had received a pornographic picture via text on her phone from someone unknown to her.  The officer helped her delete the image from her phone, and then called and spoke with the man that had sent the picture.  He explained that he had meant to send the picture to a friend of his and had accidently typed in the wrong phone number.  He assured the officer that it was a mistake and apologized. He and the officer discussed the matter and it was agreed that it would not happen again.

Here are some of the other cases Anacortes Police worked on this week.

Saturday, Jan. 11

11:47 pm.  A woman on 11th Street called to report a hit-and-run accident. She told the investigating officer that she was awakened by the sound of a crash and looked out of her home to see a large, white pickup truck in front of her house. Based upon the sound of the truck she felt that it was a diesel truck. The white truck left the scene prior to the police being called. Police are searching for the suspect vehicle, which should have front end damage from having struck the victim's parked car. Sunday, Jan. 12

12:02 am.  Officers responded to the report of two people fighting in the street on Yorkshire Drive; one of whom was wearing a Seahawks jersey. Both men fled as the police arrived.  Witnesses told police that the argument had been verbal, but not physical. They also said that two men had been arguing about the Seahawks.

6:53 am.  A downtown market reported that there were three men in the store that they believed were in the midst of shoplifting merchandise. Prior to the police arriving two of the suspects realized that they were being watched and put down the merchandise and left the store. The third was still in the store when officers arrived, but was not carrying any unpaid for merchandise.  He was contacted and identified by the police, and then removed from the store at the request of the management.

Monday, Jan. 13

1:17 pm.  An officer took a complaint at a residence on 10th St where a property owner reported that a hedge on her property had been cut down by a neighbor's landscaper. The matter is under investigation in order to determine if there was any criminal intent.

Tuesday, Jan. 14

4:16 pm.  Two 14-year-old girls were caught by a Loss Prevention Officer in a downtown market after they consumed almost $20 in food and drink and then tried to leave the store without paying.  A Police Officer responded to the store and both girls were told to stay out of the store for a year, then were handed over to their parents.

6:09 pm.  A woman shopping in a market in downtown Anacortes inadevertanly left her laptop computer in her shopping cart unattended for a moment while she walked to her car and put her groceries away. Upon realizing her mistake she quickly went back to the cart, but someone had stolen the laptop. The computer has not been recovered.

Wednesday, Jan. 15

11:25 am.  An officer recognized a woman on Sunset Ave who had warrants out for her arrest. She was taken in to custody and transported to the office. Despite the fact that the woman had already been arrested and released for these same warrants on two prior occasions, the jail declined to accept her for booking due to overcrowding.  She was given a new court date adn released. Prior to leaving the Police Station she told the officer that she was not planning on going to the next court date either, so she expected more warrants to come out for her arrest in the future.

Thursday, Jan. 16

8:11 am.  Officers responded to a report of a man and woman yelling at one another atop the Cap Sante Viewpoint.  They observed a man and woman in a car in the parking area that had a smashed out rear window. Investigation revealed that the couple ahd been verbally arguing, and then the 27-year-old Anacortes man smashed out the back window of the car.  No physical assault had taken place, but the man was arrested for Malicious Mischief for his willfully damaging the window.  He was booked in to the county jail. Further research showed that he is on probation out of the State of Oregon.  His Oregon Probation Officer was contacted and advised of the situation.  The Probation Officer advised that he would begin the process for having the man shipped back to Oregon to face charges for a Probation Violation.

1:23 pm.  A business in town reported that they were missing approximately $1,500 and they suspected that a former employee was responsible.  The matter is still under investigation.

3:11 pm.  The Animal Control Officer abserved a large dog running loose in Storvik Park.  She was able to capture the Doberman mix and figure out who owned the dog.  She took the animal home and found that the owner was not aware that the dog had left.  The owner was issued a citation for alowing the dog to run loose and she was also instructed to get the dog a 2014 City Dog License.

4:29 pm.  A woman called 911 to report the theft of her wallet from a gas station on Commercial Avenue. She told the repsonding officer that she had tried to use her credit card at the pump, but ended up having to walk inside to speak with a store employee.  She left her wallet on top of her car.  Moments later she observed a woman grab her wallet off of her car and jump in another car and flee. There are strong leads as to the identity of the susepct, which are being followed up by APD Officers.
