Police Blotter, Dec. 14 - 19, 2013

Officers were nearby when the call came in very early Saturday morning; they arrived to find several intoxicated men in a pile fighting with one another.  Four of the combatants settled down upon the arrival of the police, but the fifth, a 31-year-old Anacortes man, continued to be combative and argumentative.  After several warnings, a Taser was utilized to gain his compliance. Four of the men were cited for Disorderly Conduct and the man who was Tasered was cited for Resisting Arrest.  All of the men were released after they were issued citations with court dates.

Here are some of the other cases Anacortes Police worked on this week.

Saturday, Dec. 14

2:00 am.  Officers were dispatched to a suspicious circumstance call after two people were observed near a car on Marches Point Road near two o’clock in the morning.  One of the subjects, a 36-year-old Lake Stevens man, was found to have a $100,000 felony warrant for his arrest.  He was arrested and booked in to the Skagit County jail.

10:42 am.  A caller near 12th St and L Ave reported a blown transformer on a power pole.  This was one of several calls received from all over the city during a widespread power outage.

11:56 am.  A caller from 41st St advised receiving some attempted scam phone calls.  This time of year brings a large spike in Internet and phone scam attempts.  Please do not divulge financial information over the phone or internet unless you are absolutely sure with whom you are communicating. Report scam calls and emails to WWW.IC3.GOV.

12:30 pm.  A theft was reported in the 1900 block of 25th Street.  The caller stated that someone had stolen the tow ball and hitch from the rear of his pickup over night.  The hitch was described as rusty steel with a 3-inch drop and a 2-inch chrome ball.  

8:34 pm.  A 31-year-old Anacortes man was arrested and booked into the Skagit County Jail for Investigation of Assault 2nd Degree in violation of the Domestic Violence Protection Act after officers were summoned to a residence on West 4th Street at about 8:30 PM.  Investigation led officers to the conclusion that a woman in the home had been assaulted by her boyfriend. He was still present at the residence and was taken in to custody.

9:41 pm.  A 57-year-old Anacortes man was cited and released for Negligent Driving 1st Degree after he drove in to the ditch near the intersection of 25th Street and Q Ave.  The investigating officer found that there had been some alcohol use by the driver and that it likely played a part in his failing to negotiate the turn and ending up in the ditch.

Sunday, Dec. 15

1:16 am.  An officer observed a vehicle near Sharpe’s Corner traveling at about 40 MPH in a 55 zone and obviously weaving back and forth as it went down the road.  He made a traffic stop and conducted a DUI investigation.  The driver, a 24-year-old man from Texas, was placed under arrest and subsequently provided a breath sample one and a half times the legal limit.  He was cited for DUI and his vehicle was impounded.  Due to jail overcrowding, he was released to a sober adult and agreed to appear in court at a later date.

Monday, Dec. 16

10:30 am.  A 46-year-old Anacortes man was arrested at the Police Department after he came in to turn himself in on an outstanding warrant.  He initially asked for a new court date, but officers advised him that his warrant had a mandatory jail commit. So, he was booked in to the Skagit County Jail. The warrant was for failing to appear on a Theft charge.

7:16 pm.  A homeowner on Oakes Ave reported finding an arrow lodged in the garage door of his home. The investigating officer found the arrow had likely been launched by someone who was target practicing in the new housing development going in across the street.  No suspect was found, and the homeowner considers himself lucky that he was not standing in his driveway at the time.

Tuesday, Dec. 17

2:00 am.  An officer recognized a 27-year-old man walking near 24th Street and Commercial Ave.  A records check showed that the man had a warrant out for his arrest for failing to appear in court on a Domestic Violence Assault charge.  The officer arrested the man and took him to the Police Department.  Due to jail overcrowding he could not be booked in to the jail, so he was given a new court date and released.

3:45 pm.  Flames were spotted on a boat that was in a dry storage lot near 34th and R Ave.  Police and Fire units responded and the fire was extinguished.  A faulty heater might have been the cause of the fire.

6:54 pm.  An off-duty Anacortes officer tried to assist a 24-year-old Anacortes man who seemed distraught and was standing in the middle of the road on Skyline Way screaming.  The man initially ran off, but soon stopped and it was apparent that he was intoxicated.  He mentioned having some relationship problems and stated that he just wanted to go home.  Other Officers had arrived to assist and made sure that he was going to be all right and encouraged him to head home and stop yelling and screaming in the middle of the street.

Wednesday, Dec. 18

3:30 pm.  Officers took a report of a black framed mountain bike with dual front forks that was stolen from in front of the Anacortes Middle School overnight. The bike was not locked a the time of the theft.

6:50 pm.  A 15-year-old Anacortes resident was taken in to custody on an outstanding warrant after she was contacted at a friend’s house on 23rd street by an Anacortes officer.  The warrant was for a drug charge and she was booked in to the Skagit County Juvenile Detention Center.

9:29 pm.  A woman called to report that she had been visiting with friends at an apartment on 23rd Street and someone had taken $50.00 from her purse.  She said that as she got ready to leave she noted that her wallet was missing from her purse.  She checked and found the wallet in a trash can outside the apartment and her $50.00 was gone.  The investigating officer and the victim spoke with everyone present, but no one would admit to the theft.

Thursday, Dec. 19

5:32 pm.  Officers were summoned to assist an elderly couple in the hospital parking lot, as the husband needed to be seen by a doctor, but was having trouble getting out of the car. Officers assisted the man and got him out of the car and in o a wheelchair and then in to the hospital.
