Police Blotter, Nov. 23 - 28, 2013

Just about 4:30 AM Tuesday, a Yellow Cab driver called to request an officer respond for a woman who had jumped out of his cab and was refusing to pay her fare. Investigation revealed that the woman had ridden from Tacoma to Anacortes and that she had no way to pay the $229 fare. As it was apparent that she had no money with her when she hired the cab for the ride, she was cited for theft and given a court date.

Here are some of the other cases Anacortes Police worked on this week.

Saturday, Nov. 23

1:15 am. A downtown business called to report that an unknown male subject had just smashed an exterior light fixture on their building.  Arriving officers found that the man, who has not been identified, had also knocked over some planters and thrown some chairs in to the street before departing in a dark sedan with a woman driving.  The officers cleaned up and replaced the planters and chairs.  Cost to the business to replace the light fixture was estimated at $100.00.  Please contact the APD TipLine at 360-299-1985 if you have any idea who might be responsible for this damage. You may call and remain anonymous.

3:50 am.  At approximately 3:00 AM an officer was contacted by a Safeway employee concerning a possible attempted Forgery.  Investigation revealed that a man and woman had tried to pay for groceries and other items with a check written out for more that $600.  When the check was declined the couple left suddenly.  Further investigation has revealed that the owner of the check is actually an elderly woman in the Tacoma area and that the two people with her check book live in Tacoma and did not have permission to have the checkbook at all.  She was able to identify the two suspects and the forgery investigation is ongoing.

8:30 am.  A resident reported hearing six gunshots in the area east of 41st Street.  The area was extensively checked, but no source for the sounds was found.

3:45 pm.  Officers were dispatched to a complaint of Custodial Interference on 24th Street.  Family members felt that a small child should not be in the custody of the child’s mother according to a court order between the two parents.  An officer investigated and learned that there was no violation of the court order and the child was safe. No further action was taken.

7:24 pm.  Anacortes PD was contacted by a Social Services organization from Omaha, Nebraska. They advised that a male subject with a mental handicap was in Anacortes, but did not have a place to stay. Evidently, the man had traveled from Omaha to Anacortes to visit a friend, but things had not worked out and he now did not have a place to stay or a plan for getting home.  Anacortes Officer J. Wilson located the man, who had spent the past night in a bus shelter.  She arranged for a motel room for him, and provided him with a meal card for a free dinner (through the use of meal cards recently donated for this purpose by the Anacortes Kiwanis Aktion Club). He was placed in touch with the Nebraska agency and arrangements were made to get him home.

9:11 pm.  A man called to report that someone had stolen his car from the 2200 block of Q Ave.  He stated that he had parked his car there the night before and had now discovered it missing.  The vehicle was recovered on Nov. 29 when it was found parked and unoccupied in the 1100 block of 19th Street.

4:40 pm.  A homeowner came home and found that his house on Fidalgo Bay Road had been burglarized.  A door to the home had been forced open and a television, tools and some other items had been stolen.  The investigation for suspects in this case is ongoing.

9:38 pm.  A woman discovered that someone had done a significant amount of damage to her parked car in a hit and run accident.  The car was parked in the 800 block of 5th Street and it was struck in the front, likely by the vehicle that had been parked in front of it.  The suspect vehicle would likely have sustained damage as well.  If you any idea who might be responsible for this accident please contact the APD TipLine at 360-299-1985.

One of the men in the truck allegedly produced a large knife and demanded all of the victim’s money.  Anacortes Sgt. C. Pruiett was in the area quickly and located the reported suspect vehicle.  He and other Anacortes officers made a traffic stop on the vehicle and detained all three people in the truck until Sheriff’s Deputies could arrive. (the area where the crime is alleged to have occurred is in the county, not the city)  Deputies later booked a 49-year-old Oak Harbor man and a 51-year-old Anacortes Man into jail on Robbery charges.

10:39 pm.  Anacortes officers were dispatched to a robbery that had just occurred near 22nd and N Ave.  The victim, a 19-year-old man from Anacortes, claimed that he had been standing in a parking lot in the 1100 blk of 22nd Street when he had been confronted by a man who demanded his money or he would assault him. The suspect implied that there was a weapon in his pocket. The suspect took $80 from the victim and then left and got into a vehicle.  The investigation in to this robbery is ongoing.

11:39 am.  On November 26th Anacortes PD was notified that a vacant house in the 800 block of 34th Street had been entered without permission sometime in the past several months and all of the kitchen cabinets and plumbing had been removed.  Investigation as to who would have removed the items is ongoing, but the owners of the residence claim the items should still be there and no had permission to take them.

1:08 am.  Officers were summoned to a downtown bar after an intoxicated subject attempted to push past a bar employee and go in to the bar.  When told he had to leave, the man took a swing at the bar employee and then ran off. He was contacted by an officer and initially denied even being at the bar.  The bar employee asked that the man be removed from the establishment, which the highly intoxicated suspect claimed was illegal.  The 21-year-old Anacortes man was issued a no trespass warning and told that he would be arrested if he returned to the bar.  He was then released to a friend that drove him from the area.

11:10 pm.  A man living on O Ave called to report that his wife had just stabbed him. When officers arrived they found that he had a head wound, but not one that was consistent with being stabbed. He also appeared to be highly intoxicated. He told officers that he had been sitting on the couch when his wife suddenly attacked him. After the man was taken to the hospital, officers found his wife in a car in the driveway.  She told officers a very different story in which her husband had choked and kicked her.  She showed officers physical evidence in the home that supported her story before she, too, was taken to the hospital for her injuries. The 35-year-old husband was taken in to custody after being treated at the hospital and was booked for felony assault in violation of the Domestic Violence Protection Act.
