Police Blotter, Nov. 8 - 15, 2013

A 21-year-old man was arrested Tuesday evening for malicious mischief and DUI after neighbors in the 2700 block of Coho Lane reported a man was uprooting the no parking sign at the end of their cul-de-sac.Witnesses said the man had driven into the neighborhood, parked, and removed the sign. They told officers that they had seen him removing the sign on two other occasions as well. An officer contacted the man who appeared very impaired by alcohol. Officers located open beer in and around his vehicle.

Friday, Nov. 8

2:50am.  A resident in the 2000 block of “K” Ave. awoke to hear his car alarm going off. He looked out the window and observed someone in his vehicle. He told officers the suspect fled on foot but was unable to say what direction he went. Nothing was taken from the unlocked vehicle.

9:18 pm.  A 13-year-old boy was booked into Juvenile Detention for Malicious Harassment after he threatened a guest in his home with a knife. Police were summoned to the residence in the 900 block of 23rd St. after a man reported the son of a woman he was visiting had threatened him with a knife. Officers noted there were small children in the home and interviewed several adults who confirmed the boy had told the man to leave and when he did not do so, he retrieved a knife from the kitchen and threatened him with it.

Saturday, Nov. 9

4:04 pm.  A 42-year-old Coupeville woman was arrested for attempting to steal over $200.00 worth of products from a grocery store in the 1100 block of 9th St. The woman secreted the items in a large black purse, had left the store and was walking toward a vehicle when the security officer attempted to stop her. She dropped her purse and ran off. Officers later located her in a fast food restaurant in the 2700 block of Commercial Ave. She admitted to the attempted theft, was cited and released.

Sunday, Nov. 10

2:48 am.  A 22-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested on two outstanding traffic warrants and was also cited for possession of drug paraphernalia after an officer recognized the woman and contacted her at 16th St. and Commercial Ave. When approached, the woman quickly gave her purse to a man who left the area. The arresting officer located a device that is used in ingesting heroin on the woman at the time of her arrest.

11:24 pm.  A 20-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for possession of marijuana after officers responded to a noise complaint in the 1800 block of Commercial Ave. The man and two of his friends were reported to be revving the engines of their cars in front of the building. Two of the men had misdemeanor warrants for their arrest. The 20-year-old man had a small amount of marijuana on his person at the time of his arrest. He told officers it was legal for him to possess, but officers reminded him he was not 21 and it was against the law for him to have marijuana.  Both men were released on their warrants due to jail overcrowding and the 20-year-old received a citation for possession of marijuana.

Monday, Nov. 11

11:23 pm.  A 35-year-old Anacortes man is serving 45 days in jail for a previous arrest and is facing new charges of possession of heroin after an officer observed some suspicious activity in the area of Erie Ave. near Oakes Ave.  The officer saw a car slowly drive up Erie Ave. and stop in the middle of the road. The man approached the car, contacted the occupants, and the car drove away. The officer contacted the man and recognized him from previous contacts. The man had two arrest warrants for not showing up for his jail term after being sentenced to 45 days in jail for hit-and-run and reckless driving.  At the time of arrest the man had a small amount of heroin on his person.

Tuesday, Nov. 12

9:39 pm.  A 24-year-old Tacoma man is in Skagit County Jail facing charges of vehicle theft, possession of cocaine and other related charges after he stole a car from in front of a convenience store in the 1100 block of 12th St. The Chevrolet Blazer was parked in front of the store with the keys in it. The owner discovered it missing and called 911. An officer located the vehicle being driven southbound in the 3300 block of Commercial Ave. a short time later. The driver appeared to be under the influence of drugs and was taken to the hospital for a blood sample prior to going to jail.

Thursday, Nov. 14

6:11 am.  A 63-year-old Anacortes man was cited for negligent driving after he veered his car to the right and struck two legally parked vehicles in the 1100 block of 8th St.  The man said that he had been reaching for something on the front passenger seat when he struck the parked cars.  The man was not injured.

11:52 am.  The owner of a veterinary center in the 3300 block of Commercial Avenue reported an attempted break-in to the facility after discovering pry marks and damage to the door handles of a secondary building on the property.  Fortunately, no entry was gained and nothing appeared to be missing.  

12:40 pm.  An unknown female walked into a gas station/convenience store in the 2400 block of Commercial Avenue and stole a plastic donation bin for a non-profit organization benefiting children with Down Syndrome.  The bin had been next to the cash register and was believed to have at least $25.00 inside.  Security video showed a man and woman enter the store area and the man appeared to distract the cashier.  The woman is then seen grabbing the donation bin and walking away.  Police are working on identifying the woman.  

3:00 pm.  An officer recognized a 21-year-old Mount Vernon man walking in the 800 block of Commercial Avenue and confirmed the man had 12 warrants for his arrest.  The man claimed that he was in Anacortes to quash a warrant, but since it was after court hours and most of his warrants were out of Mount Vernon his statement was not believable.  The man was placed under arrest on the warrants which stemmed from previous charges of criminal trespass, vehicle prowling, possession of a dangerous weapon, and numerous MIP’s (Minor In Possession).  The man was booked into the county jail.

10:45 pm.  An officer stopped a vehicle in the 700 block of 34th Street for having expired license tabs.  The driver initially claimed that he had forgot his wallet and provided a false name and date of birth, but the officer became suspicious when the driver hesitated providing the information.  The man then admitted he was lying and identified himself as a 24-year-old Guemes Island resident who had a suspended driver’s license and three warrants for his arrest.  The warrants stemmed from previous charges of DUI, reckless endangerment, and driving with a suspended license.  The man was placed under arrest and booked into jail on the warrants and a new charge of driving while suspended.   

Friday, Nov. 15

1:35 am.  A 40-year-old woman was booked into jail on charges of domestic violence assault and malicious mischief after she allegedly threw water onto her husband during the course of an argument and also smashed several of his framed pictures and his prescription sunglasses.  Officers observed broken glass from the picture frames scattered all over the floor at the residence in the 4700 block of Devonshire Drive.  The woman also allegedly grabbed and scratched her husband’s arm and hand and he had visible marks.  The woman said that the couple had been arguing throughout the evening and that she had “overreacted” after her husband had brought up an affair she had previously been involved in.
