Police Blotter, May 3 - 10, 2013

Friday, May 3

12:46 pm.  A house in the 4000 block of Oakes Avenue was burglarized for the second time in a month.  The resident returned home to find an exterior door had been shattered and forced open.  A brand new 60-inch LED television and a laptop computer were discovered stolen.  There are no suspects at this time.  

9:37 pm.  An orange colored children’s BMX style bike valued at $100 was stolen from outside of an apartment in the 1100 block of 24th Street. 

Sunday, May 5

1:08 am.  Police responded to an alarm at Anacortes High School and discovered that a window had been broken out and that a fire had been set in a trash can inside of a building.  A portable bathroom in the north parking lot of the high school had also been set ablaze.  The fires were quickly extinguished, although several thousand dollars in damage was done to property. 

Officers from the Anacortes and Swinomish Tribal Police searched the area and their efforts located witnesses who had seen subjects running from the school.  Further investigation led to the identification of one of the suspects, a 17-year-old Anacortes boy, who was a former student.  He admitted to his involvement in the incident and was taken in to custody and booked in to Skagit County Juvenile Detention. During the ensuing investigation three other 15- and 16-year-old Anacortes High School students were interviewed and admitted their involvement in this matter.  All four suspects face possible charges of burglary, arson and malicious mischief. 

10:09 am.  Someone “keyed” the side of a pickup parked in the 200 block of 5th Street causing approximately $1,000 in damage.  The unknown vandal also stuffed a rag into the vehicle’s tailpipe.  

3:51 pm.  Police responded to an apartment in the 1600 block of M Avenue after a witness heard a woman screaming for someone to call the police.  Officers arrived and spoke with a woman who said that she had been arguing with her 59-year-old husband over his drinking and being intoxicated.  The woman said that she and her husband often had “issues” when he drank.  The argument escalated to where the husband allegedly picked up a bicycle and threw it inside of the apartment damaging a glass tabletop, shelving, and knocking several ceramic figurines to the floor.  The man then allegedly grabbed the woman and pushed her out the door. The man told police that his wife had been “ranting and raving” and “telling everyone that she was nuts” and he denied pushing her.  Officers observed broken glass and items knocked to the floor.  The man was arrested and booked into jail on charges of domestic violence assault and malicious mischief.  

7:50 pm.  A resident of the 1400 block of 30th Street arrived home and found that the glass to the back door had been shattered and that the house had been burglarized.  Items stolen from the home included an older laptop computer, approximately $300 in cash, and several pieces of inexpensive jewelry.  There are no suspects at this time.  

Monday, May 6

4:25 am.  A jewelry repair kit containing many specialty tools with a total value estimated at $2,000 was stolen from a vehicle parked in the 1200 block of 4th Street.  The victim said that he was sure the vehicle had been locked, but there was no sign of forced entry.  

1:06 pm.  A woman who arrived at the police station to speak with an officer about a previous case appeared to be distraught and had visible bruises on her arm, leg, and fresh finger marks around her neck.  The woman told police that her 38-year-old boyfriend had punched her with a closed fist and choked her to the point of her beginning to shake uncontrollably two days prior.  The boyfriend had reportedly been upset about the woman talking to police about an incident she had previously reported.  The woman also reported that the man had choked her a second time just before she came to the police department.  Police located the man the next day and spoke with him.  The man claimed that the woman had attacked him and that he had to defend himself with a lamp.  He did say that during the first argument he “might” have grabbed the woman by the neck.  He was booked into jail on charges of domestic violence assault in the 2nd degree.  

2:15 pm.  Someone forced open the sliding door to a detached garage in the 3400 block of Commercial Avenue and stole a Stihl brand weed eater valued at $299.  Police spoke with an Anacortes man who was mentioned as a possible suspect, but the man denied any wrongdoing.  

3:50 pm.  Police are investigating the theft of a gold ring from a jewelry box at a home in the 1000 block of 27th Street.  The victim had spoken with her boyfriend and his father and both people denied any involvement in the theft.   

7:29 pm.  Someone broke the glass out of a door at a home in the 12000 block of Fidalgo Bay Road and then reached in and unlocked the door while the homeowner was away.  The only thing that appeared to have been stolen was a bowl that contained approximately $10.00 in loose change inside of the house and a small gas can from outside.   

7:40 pm.  Officer responded to an apartment in the 1100 block of 24th Street after a woman reported that her 22-year-old ex-boyfriend was throwing things around the apartment and refusing to leave.  The man had reportedly arrived at the home and forced his way inside while demanding to see their in common child and accusing the ex-girlfriend of seeing another man.  The man also allegedly shoved the woman backwards after she refused to give him her phone.  The man then allegedly began to throw things around the apartment while demanding that the woman get back together with him.  The man denied having shoved his way into the apartment and said that he had only shoved the woman after she had hit him in the arm.  The man was determined to be the primary aggressor and he was placed under arrest and booked into jail on charges of domestic violence assault.  

Tuesday, May 7

12:46 pm.  Police responding to a burglary alarm at a residence in the 2000 block of 41st Street discovered a glass exterior door had been broken.  Police searched the home but found no one inside.  The homeowner then arrived and found that the unknown burglar had rummaged through some drawers but that nothing appeared to have been stolen.   

Wednesday, May 8

7:18 am.  Police were dispatched to a burglary in progress at a home in the 1400 block of 26th Street after a witness reported seeing a man kick in a door at the house.  When officers arrived, they found the front door had been forced open.  Police searched the house and found a 19-year-old Anacortes man lying on the living room floor.  The man was placed under arrest and he smelled strongly of intoxicants.  The man’s parents had formerly lived at the house, but had moved out a few days prior and the house was vacant.  The man told police that he had returned to the house to “take a nap.”  The man was booked into jail on charges of investigation of residential burglary and underage drinking.   

10:14 am.  A resident who was at home in the 400 block of E. Park Drive heard someone trying to slide open a window and called 911.  The resident then discovered the window screen had been removed.  It was believed that the unknown burglar fled when he heard the resident’s voice before he/she could make entry.  Police searched the area, but did not locate any possible suspects.    

1:22 pm.  A Ryobi brand rechargeable nail gun was stolen out of a tool trailer that was parked behind a restaurant in the 900 block of Commercial Avenue.  The nail gun was valued at $200.  

5:01 pm.  The owner of a boat being stored at a marine storage facility in the 3300 block of V Avenue discovered that someone had broken into his boat and stolen a handheld VHF radio and charger and some loose change from a can.  The thief had also rifled through several cabinets on the boat.  

5:08 pm.  A 28-year-old Anacortes woman was issued a criminal citation for misdemeanor theft after employees of a grocery store in the 900 block of 11th Street saw her concealing items in a baby stroller and then leave the store without paying.  The woman was detained until police arrived. The stolen items included a bottle of shampoo, hair conditioner, a DVD movie, and a bottle of tequila. 

5:23 pm.  A 35-year-old Anacortes woman suffered a headache and a sore knee after the car she was driving was hit from behind while she was stopped for the traffic light on State Route 20 at R Avenue.  The offending vehicle, described as being similar to a navy blue colored Acura, fled the scene at a high rate of speed onto Commercial Avenue when the woman called 911.  The woman was unable to obtain the license number of the fleeing vehicle.     

Thursday, May 9

3:37 pm.  An Anacortes Middle School Student reported his iPhone was stolen from his backpack during the school day.  Officers are following up on leads on a possible suspect. 

5:30 pm.  A 30-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested for DUI and Hit and Run Driving after witnesses reported seeing a woman in a VW Jetta back into a truck in the Country Corner parking lot at Sharpes Corner on SR 20.  Officers located the car parked at a residence in the 6000 block of Campbell Lake Rd. The driver was contacted and was arrested. 

Friday, May 10

8:53 am.  A 19-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for shoplifting after he took a pair of sunglasses from a grocery store in the 1500 block of Commercial Ave. Initially the call was reported as a robbery but it was quickly changed to a theft, and that the suspect had a knife but did not brandish it.

12:20 pm.  A 36-year-old man was arrested for Assault 4th domestic violence and resisting arrest after police were summoned by his parents to their home in the 2300 block of 23rd St. The man reportedly wanted to talk on his mothers phone and grabbed her arm and pried the phone from her hand.  When officers arrived he resisted arrest and had to be physically restrained so that handcuffs could be applied.
