Here are some of the other cases Anacortes Police worked on last week.

Saturday, April 27

1:15 am.  A 22-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested for drunk driving after an officer stopped the vehicle she was driving for failing to stop a stop sign and having a defective brake light.  The officer saw that the woman’s eyes were bloodshot and that she smelled of intoxicants.  The woman said that she had only had “two drinks” as she was the “designated driver” for her friends.  She also said that she had been drinking “dark beer” which she normally didn’t drink.  The woman stumbled when she exited her vehicle and she failed field sobriety tests.  During processing, she provided breath samples that were slightly over the legal limit.  She was issued a citation for DUI and released.

8:31am.  Police responded to a pharmacy in the 900 block of 17th Street after a man attempted to use a counterfeit $100 bill to make a purchase.  It was also learned that the same man had made a purchase at another pharmacy a block away using a counterfeit $100 bill.  Inspection of the bill revealed that it was a “washed” $5.00 bill.  Police were familiar with the 39-year-old Anacortes resident from previous incidents in which he tried to pass phony money.  An officer located the man riding a bicycle near Oakes and Baltimore and took him into custody.  The man had a counterfeit bill in his possession and well as three used syringes which he admitted using to smoke heroin.  The man was booked into jail on investigation of forgery charges.

8:36 am.  Someone pried off the outer door knob of an exterior door in an attempt to burglarize a business in the 600 block of Commercial Avenue.  An employee discovered the missing knob and the door locking mechanism twisted and exposed.  Fortunately, entry into the business was not successful.   There are no suspects at this time.

9:04 am.  While investigating the attempted burglary from the previous case, an officer discovered a second business in the 600 block of Commercial Avenue had also had its alleyway exterior door knob pried off.  It appeared that some type of gripping tool had been used to pull off the knob.  Again, the unknown suspect(s) were unable to make entry into the building.

10:03 am.  An iPod was stolen from an unlocked car parked in front of a home in the 1600 block of M Avenue.

9:22 pm.  A red Specialized-brand 21-speed mountain bike valued at $400 was stolen from in front of a home in the 1000 block of 28th Street.  Also stolen was the combination cable lock that had been wrapped under the seat but not securing the bike at the time of the theft.

Sunday, April 28

12:01 am.  An officer stopped a vehicle in the 900 block of 4th Street after seeing that the driver was not wearing his seatbelt.  The driver, a 24-year-old Anacortes man, smelled of intoxicants and had watery bloodshot eyes but answered “nothing” when asked how much he had to drink.  The man then became confrontational and told the officer he was “embarrassing” him in front of the man’s girlfriend.  The man did agree to participate in field sobriety tests in which he preformed poorly.  He was arrested for drunk driving and taken to the police station where he continued to say he had “nothing” to drink.  His blood alcohol content disputed his claim though as he provided breath samples that were just under twice the legal limit.  He was cited for DUI and released.

1:09 am.  Police responded to a home in the 2300 block of Sundown Court after a woman reported that her husband had thrown her to the ground causing her to hit her head and that she had locked him out of the house.  When officers arrived, they found the 40-year-old husband pounding on a window outside of the home.  The man was obviously intoxicated and he told an officer that he had been “defending” himself as he claimed his wife had hit him.  He then said that he tripped his wife and wrestled her to the ground to restrain her.  The man said that he had been a “wrestler” and that “when you are fighting you go back to what you know.”  The wife said that her husband had also been throwing around folded laundry before pushing her to the ground.  The wife denied hitting the man prior to him assaulting her.  The man was determined to be the primary aggressor and he was arrested and booked into jail for domestic violence assault.

Monday, April 29

9:52 am.  A third business in the 600 block of Commercial Avenue was discovered to have been burglarized after employees arrived for work and found several items out of place.  A closer inspection revealed that a .45 caliber handgun, two laptop computers, a digital camera, and some prescription medication were stolen.  There are no suspects at this time.

12:35 pm.  A women’s pink- and white-colored Huffy brand mountain bike was stolen off the front porch of a home in the 1500 block of 17th Street.  The bike was valued at $120.

6:18 pm.  A couple who had been out of town for a few days returned to their home in the 1000 block of 18th Street and discovered that someone had stolen a jar containing approximately $400 in change that had been hidden in their house.  Police spoke with the couple’s housemates and a woman who had stayed at the house during the couple’s absence, but they all denied any involvement in the theft.

7:01 pm.  A 14-year-old boy was booked into juvenile detention on charges of brandishing a dangerous weapon and assault after he allegedly pointed a loaded handgun at his mother and shoved his grandmother to the ground at a home in the 2000 block of H Avenue.  The boy had been arguing with his grandmother which resulted in a shoving match that knocked her to the ground.  The boy’s mother then arrived home and she began arguing with the boy.  The boy then reportedly went to a bedroom and returned with a loaded gun that he reportedly put under his own chin while asking “what do you think of this?”  When the boy’s mother stepped towards her son to take the gun, the boy allegedly pointed the gun at her before she grabbed it away.  The boy told police that he had “just been trying to scare them.”

7:35 pm.  Five piggy banks filled with quarters that totaled approximately $250 were stolen from a home in the 3200 block of K Avenue.  A laptop computer was also reported missing.  The victim was suspicious of a family member and wanted to confront the person himself before involving the police further.

Tuesday, April 30

8:42 am.  A wallet containing the victim’s credit cards and a Sony PSP handheld game system containing the game “Grand Theft Auto Vice City” were stolen from a car parked in the 4100 block of Cherry Lane.  The victim believed that she had locked her car, but thought it was possible a family member had left a door unlocked.

Wednesday, May 1

8:51 am.  Police are using security video to try and identify an elderly man who allegedly shoplifted a decorative metal frog from a gift shop at a medical facility in the 1200 block of 24th Street.  The video showed the man concealing the frog in his pocket and then leaving the gift shop.  The item was valued at $18.00.

1:07 pm.  An Anacortes woman reported that she had been punched in the head and face by a 44-year-old Bellingham woman while aboard a boat moored at a marina in the 1000 block of Q Avenue.  The victim said that the other woman had grabbed her by the hair and punched her with no provocation, but that the suspect might be under the belief that the victim was involved in a romantic relationship with the suspect’s boyfriend whose boat they were all aboard.  The boyfriend told police that he had been exchanging provocative text messages with the victim in the previous few days and that his girlfriend (the suspect) had gotten a hold of his phone and viewed the messages causing her to become upset.  The suspect had left the boat prior to officer arrival and police are seeking to speak with her.  The victim had bruising to her face.

4:09 pm.  Someone stole a Magellan-brand GPS from an unlocked car parked in the 4100 block of Cherry Lane.

4:56 pm.  A vehicle crashed into a bank of mailboxes in the 600 block of Fidalgo Avenue and then fled the scene without stopping.  The collision caused significant damage to the vehicle and pieces of the body, headlight, and a wheel were left at the scene.  The offending vehicle was described as a small black SUV.

8:45 pm.  An 18-year-old Anacortes man was detained by an employee outside of a grocery store in the 900 block of 11th Street after he had shoplifted a bottle of “fireball” whiskey.  The man told the employee, “You caught me.”  The man had been seen concealing the bottle under his sweatshirt and then leaving the store without attempting to pay.  An officer arrived and took custody of the man and noted that he had watery bloodshot eyes and a flushed face.  The man told the officer that he had drank “eight beers” over the course of the day.  The man was charged with theft and being a minor in possession and released.

Thursday, May 2

1:14 pm.  A resident of the 1500 block of D Avenue reported that she had checked with the post office after not receiving some clothing she had ordered and learned that the package had been delivered.  It was then believed that someone stole the package from her mailbox.  The stolen clothing was valued at $134.

4:48 pm.  Police contacted a 40-year-old woman at her residence in the 1500 block of 32nd Street and arrested her on three outstanding warrants.  The warrants were from previous charges of drunk driving, violating an anti-harassment order, and driving with a suspended license.   The woman was advised that she was under arrest, but was released after being given new court dates due to jail overcrowding.

5:43 pm.  A 13-year-old boy had his “long board” style skateboard stolen while he was playing on the swings at Storvik Park.  The skate board had been set down near a park bench and was valued at $150.

7:48 pm.  A 48-year-old Oak Harbor woman was charged with theft after police used store surveillance video to identify her as a shoplifter at a pharmacy in the 900 block of 17th Street.  Employees had seen the woman picking up and examining beauty products and then found the empty packaging in the garbage in the women’s restroom.  Later that night, an officer recognized the woman from store security camera video walking in the 300 block of Commercial Avenue.  The woman admitted to the theft and police recovered some of the stolen items from her purse and clothing.
