Police Blotter, Feb. 1 - 7, 2013

A contractor working at a construction site in the 3500 block of “K” Ave reported that someone had entered the job site over the weekend and removed the wiring which had just been strung inside the building. The contractor estimated a $5,000 loss.  A sergeant on swing shift heard about the theft and recalled seeing some men stripping wire at a house on Fidalgo Bay Rd. on Saturday while there on another investigation. He obtained samples of the wire from the contractor and obtained a search warrant for the house on Fidalgo Bay Rd. Casings matching the stolen wire were discovered at the home along with some suspected drugs. Three people were arrested in connection with the theft, a 44-year-old Anacortes woman, a 41-year-old Anacortes man, and a 39-year-old man who resided at the home. Officer’s tracked the stolen wire to a recycling center in Oak Harbor. The thieves were paid only $150.00 cash for the wire.

2:51 am.  An officer contacted a 21-year-old Anacortes man riding a bicycle and took him into custody after confirming that he had a felony warrant for his arrest for failing to appear for a Skagit County Jail work crew for a previous possession of a controlled substance charge.  During a search of the man, officers found two plastic baggies containing white powder that the man claimed was “sugar.”  When tested, the “sugar” actually proved to be methamphetamine.  A drug smoking pipe and other articles of drug paraphernalia were found in backpack the man had in his possession.  The man was booked into jail on his warrant and he faces new felony charges of possession of a controlled substance.

7:03 am.  An Evinrude brand 9.9 horsepower outboard boat motor valued at $900 was stolen off of a boat that was in storage at a facility on “V” Place.  Power cables on the boat had also been cut and damaged.  The theft was believed to have occurred some time in the past month.

Sunday, Feb. 3

1:36 pm.  An alert police officer noticed an older black sedan at a business in the 2400 block of Commercial Ave. and recognized the car as one that police had noticed at a house on Fidalgo Bay Rd. the previous day during a criminal investigation.  A man was seated in the vehicle and when he realized the officer was watching him, he quickly exited and entered the business.  The officer discovered the vehicle license plate expiration was 2003 not 2013 as displayed on the license tab.  The officer entered the store and recognized the man as a 26-year-old Anacortes man with a lengthy arrest history and current warrants for his arrest.  The man gave a false name to the officer name at the time of his arrest.  Numerous items including a women’s purse were in plain view in the vehicle including a lock box. The man told officers that nothing in the car belonged to him and he had borrowed the car from a friend. No owner was located for the vehicle. The car was impounded.

The officer noted the man had a distinct silver chain around his neck and recalled that one similar had been stolen in a theft from a storage locker on Marches Pt. last month.  The victim in that case came to the police department and positively identified the chain as being hers.  The man told officers that he was given the chain by a friend.  He was released on his warrants as the jail was full.

A search warrant for additional stolen property in the car was executed and a small amount of suspected heroin and additional pieces of jewelry were found.  The jewelry did not appear to be of much value but officers are following up with recent theft and burglary victims.  The investigation is continuing and additional charges will be filed.

4:58 pm.  A resident in the 3200 block of “L” Ave. reported that a 55-gallon drum of copper scraps from plumbing repairs was stolen from the alley behind his home sometime since January 31st.  The white and blue drum and copper scraps were valued by the owner at $1,000.  Officers checked the same recycling center in Oak Harbor for this copper that they had checked for the case earlier in the weekend.  They did not locate the copper at the recycling center.

An officer on routine patrol discovered a garage on the property was occupied by four individuals.  Evidence suggested that three individuals had been injecting suspected heroin.  Three adults, two men ages 22 and a 26-year-old Anacortes woman were arrested for criminal trespass and drug charges and booked into the Skagit County Jail.  A 17-year-old Everett boy will be charged with criminal trespass at a later date.  He was reported to have runaway from home about six months ago.  He was reunited with his parents.
