Police Blotter, Sept. 28 - Oct. 3, 2012

A car belonging to a Port Townsend couple was vandalized while parked at the Washington State Ferry Terminal for a few days.  The couple discovered on Wednesday, Oct. 3, that someone had poured what appeared to be acid on the vehicle’s hood causing extensive damage to the paint, headlight lens, and front bumper.  The damage was estimated at $1,700.

Here are some other cases Anacortes Police worked on last week.

Friday, Sept. 28

4:50 pm.  An officer recognized a 27-year-old Coupeville man walking in the 1200 block of Commercial Avenue and was aware that the man had a warrant for his arrest for reckless driving.  The man was placed under arrest and during the search the officer found a dagger concealed in a sheath that was suspended around the man’s neck under his shirt.  The man said that was unaware that it was illegal to furtively carry the dagger.  The man was booked into jail on the warrant and received a new charge of possession of a dangerous weapon.

7:32 pm.  An officer arrested a 25-year-old Anacortes man in the 2400 block of Commercial Avenue on an outstanding warrant for domestic violence assault.  The jail declined to accept the man for booking and he was released after being given a new court date.

Saturday, Sept. 29

12:21 am.  Police were dispatched to a grocery store in the 900 block of 11th Street during late night hours regarding the report of a “child” sleeping ion the ground outside of one of the entrances.  The “child” was determined to be a 44-year-old Everett man who had a warrant for his arrest for theft out of Mount Vernon.  The man was arrested on the warrant.  The man also had an unopened bottle of wine near him but it could not be determined if he had stolen it.  The jail again would not accept the man for booking and he was released after being given a new court date.

2:28 am.  A resident of the 1300 block of Dakota Avenue reported that he had interrupted a vehicle prowl and that he had the prowler at gunpoint.  Police arrived and took custody of the 18-year-old male suspect who resides in Anacortes.  The victim said that he had taken his dogs outside when he saw the suspect inside of his truck looking around while holding a flashlight.  The victim retrieved his gun from inside of his home and held the man at gunpoint until police arrived.  Police found a switchblade-style knife on the suspect when he was searched.  The suspect later told police that he had decided to take a walk and saw the window of the truck was broken out and that it would be an “easy way to take a few things.”  The suspect admitted that he “froze” when the man pointed a gun at him because he was “afraid.”  The suspect also claimed that he did not know that possessing a switchblade was illegal.  He was booked into jail on charges of vehicle prowling and possession of a dangerous weapon.

8:56 pm.  Police were asked to check on the welfare of a 48-year-old man at a home in the 1500 block of 13th Street after the man had called 911 and told the dispatcher that he was “going to jail tonight.”  The man also made other nonsensical statements to the dispatcher.  Police arrived and the man ranted about the mafia “taking over the world.”  The man’s prediction did come true though when he was arrested and booked into jail after police learned that he had a warrant for his arrest from previous charges of theft and resisting arrest.

11:12 pm.  An officer working at night checked on a vehicle parked at a strange angle on the side of State Route 20 near Fidalgo Bay Road.  The officer discovered an 18-year-old Anacortes man who appeared to be sleeping in the back seat.  The man claimed that he was just waiting for friends, but when the man sat up the officer saw a blood soaked paper towel and a bloody knife on the seat.  The man then admitted that he had been cutting himself and he showed the officer several fresh cuts across his wrists.  The man said that he was “upset” and had had a very hard day.  The man declined the officer’s offer to go the hospital, but it was determined that he was a danger to himself and he was taken into protective custody.  The man was then taken to the emergency room for treatment.

Sunday, Sept. 30

6:14 am.  An officer stopped a car in the 1500 block of 12th Street after he saw it towing two skateboarders who were clinging to the rear bumper.  One of the skateboarders, a 22-year-old Anacortes man, was intoxicated and claimed that they were “shooting a skateboard video.”  The man said that he had asked the woman to drive his vehicle because he was too intoxicated and he had been arrested for DUI recently.  The driver of the vehicle was identified as a 22-year-old Anacortes woman who smelled of intoxicants and had a mostly empty bottle of vodka on the floor near her.  The woman claimed that she had “one” drink since getting off work a few hours earlier. The woman failed field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for drunk driving.  During processing, the woman provided breath samples that were almost twice the legal limit.  She was issued a citation for DUI and released to a sober friend.

3:08 pm.  A blue 1988 Honda Civic was reported stolen from where it was parked near the Guemes ferry in the 500 block of I Avenue sometime in the previous week.  The victim, a Guemes Island resident, said that she believed the car had been locked.  The victim said that she had not given anyone permission to take the car.  No suspects at this time.

Monday, Oct. 1

10:28 am.  A 1964 McCullough 7½-horsepower “antique” boat motor was stolen from a residence in the 3900 block of Commercial Avenue.  The motor had been left unsecured outside of the garage.  It was valued at $300.

10:47 am.  A 16-year-old Anacortes boy was referred to juvenile court on charges of illegal possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia after school staff caught him with a small amount of marijuana, a smoking pipe, and an inhaler used to inhale vaporized marijuana while on school grounds.  The boy admitted that he used marijuana many times a day “for fun.”  The boy’s mother came to the school and told police that she was aware of the boy’s habit and that she didn’t believe that it was a problem.  The woman voiced her opinion that marijuana should be legalized and that she had no intention of stopping her son from using the drug.

12:00 pm.  A red boy’s Schwinn 18-speed mountain bike was stolen from the bike rack at Mount Erie Elementary School.  The bike had been left chained to a wooden rack, but the unknown thief broke a wooden slat and stole the bike and the chain.

1:04 pm.  An Anacortes man reported that he had received two telephone calls from a woman with a foreign accent claiming to be from the “Government Grants Corporation” offering the man grants of several thousand dollars if he would send her $225 along with picture identification.  The man was suspicious and did not send any money.  Police called the phone number provided initially by the woman.  The officer questioned her about her location and legitimacy, but the woman hung up when she found out she was speaking with a police officer.

Wednesday, Oct. 3

11:51 am.  Police responded to a home in the 1500 block of 13th Street regarding the report of a man who appeared to be in pain and vomiting on the lawn.  It was learned that the 21-year-old man had been smoking marijuana and drinking beer all morning and that had made him sick.  The man had also been arguing with another man who was the primary resident at the home.  A court order was in effect that prohibited the man from being at the home or having any contact with the primary resident.  The man was taken to the hospital due to his extreme intoxication where he was issued a criminal citation for violating the no-contact order.

3:59 pm.  An employee of a medical facility in the 1200 block of 24th Street discovered that someone had removed the cover from the steering column on her car while it had been parked in one of the facilities’ lots.  It did not appear that any of the wiring had been tampered with in an attempt to “hot wire” the car though.  The interior of the car had been rifled through, and the victim was missing a pair of sunglasses and a belt.  The car had been left unlocked.

4:31 pm.  A citizen called 911 as she was concerned after seeing a man walking a woman with a leash around her on Commercial Avenue.  The 22-year-old woman told police that she wanted the leash around her neck and was under no duress.

5:17 pm.  An officer stopped a car on the State Route 20 spur after confirming that the driver, a 19-year-old Bow man, had a $25,000 bail felony warrant for his arrest from a previous drug possession charge.  The man was arrested without incident and booked into jail.

6:57 pm.  An Anacortes woman reported that she had invited a friend to her motel room in the 3000 block of Commercial Avenue and that the friend had stolen her Honda Accord while she was taking a shower.  The victim said that her purse had also been stolen from inside of the room.  The purse contained the victim’s identification, clothing, cigarettes, and $100 in cash.  The victim could only provide a first name for the female suspect, and she is working with the police to identify and locate the woman and her vehicle.

10:45 pm.  A 21-year-old Anacortes area transient was arrested for shoplifting after employees of a store in the 1600 block of Commercial Avenue saw him leave the store without paying for several packages of beef jerky.  Police located the man riding a bicycle a short distance away and took him into custody.  During the search of the man, police found an illegal “butterfly” knife in his pocket and several small baggies with trace amounts of suspected methamphetamine.  The man was booked into jail on charges of theft, possession of a dangerous weapon, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
