Police Blotter, Jan. 15, 2011

A resident from the 1000 block of 20th street reported on Tuesday, Jan. 11, that his checking account had been compromised and cash had been withdrawn at 2 cash machines at local banks and the card had been used at a local gas station. Officers recovered this surveillance photo of a female subject accessing the account at local cash machine They are following up on leads in the case. Officers are asking for the publics help in identifying the woman.

Friday, Jan. 7

A 19-year-old Anacortes man was cited for 2 counts of theft third after a relative of the man  reported he had just left  their home at 1700 block of 28th St. with an X-Box gaming system and laptop computer.  They also believed he took a snowboard jacket, a stereo amplifier and a small flat screen TV.  Officers reported they caught up with the man a short time later.  He reportedly told officers that he had taken some of the items over a period of a week and traded them for drugs. He was able to recover the lap top and it was returned.

Saturday, Jan. 8

A resident in the 1300 block of 34th St. called police after hearing a prowler.  Officers arrived and discovered a door to the attached storage shed had been kicked open. However the strike appeared to come from inside the door.  Another officer contacted a 23-year-old transient man a short distance away.  The man reportedly told the officer he accidentally locked himself inside the shed and kicked the door in order to get out.  He was booked into the jail for burglary.

A 39-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for DUI following a vehicle collision in the 800 block of 30th St.  A witness told officers that he heard a loud noise outside and saw a car in the ditch across the street and a second parked car on the street looked like it had been struck.  The driver was taken to the hospital and treated for facial injuries.  He was also arrested for DUI and a blood sample was taken for alcohol testing.  After his hospital treatment was complete the man was booked into the jail. 

A resident in the 3200 block of “M” Ave reported an expensive flower pot was broken overnight.  It turns out that officers had already arrested the culprit.  The man arrested for burglary also reportedly told officers he had broken the flower pot. 

A 32-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for theft after leaving a grocery store in the 900 block of 11th St. with a cart full of groceries valued at over $350. An employee noticed the man and a small boy pushing the car out of the parking lot he tried to catch up to them.  On seeing that he was being pursued, the man abandoned the cart, picked up the small child and ran off northbound.  Officers viewed the stores surveillance tape and immediately recognized the man from prior contacts.  He was contacted a short time later and cited for theft.

A 62-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for DUI after an officer pulled him over to warn him about having expired license tabs.  The stop occurred in a parking lot in the 900 block of 11th St.  The officer reported he immediately noticed the man exhibited obvious signs of intoxication.  The officer also discovered the man’s driver’s license was also suspended.  The man was arrested and taken to the Police Station.  His breath alcohol test was over double the legal limit. 

An elderly man was stuck by a vehicle as he attempted to cross the street at 32nd and Commercial Ave..  Witnesses told officers that the light was red and oncoming traffic had the right of way when the man stepped out into the street.  Fortunately the elderly man sustained only minor facial injuries. 

Sunday, Jan. 9

A 34-year-old Anacortes man was treated and released from the hospital following a fight that erupted outside an establishment in the 300 block of Commercial Ave.  The incident started inside the bar when a man inappropriately touched a woman who was there with a group of friends. The victim confronted the man and suggested that they fight.  Once outside the victim and witnesses told officers that several men came out with the suspect and knocked the victim to the ground and stomped on him.  The investigation is continuing. 

A 51-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for DUI after he disobeyed the right turn only signs on “O” Ave at 12th St.   He then accelerated rapidly and turned onto “I” Ave. and parked his vehicle partially on the sideway on the north side of the roadway facing oncoming traffic.  Officers noticed obvious signs of intoxication when contacting the man.  He refused to submit to field sobriety tests, was arrested and taken to the Police Department for a blood alcohol test. 

Monday, Jan. 10

An 18-year-old man was cited for negligent driving and malicious mischief after he was caught “rooting around” in his jeep in the grassy area in front of the City Shop.  The man and two juvenile passengers had been driving on the snow covered lawn and had caused extensive damage to the grass. 

A 2009 9 horsepower Suzuki outboard was taken from a boat that was in dry storage in the 600 block of 30th St. Thieves did about $500 damage to the fuel and hydraulic lines when they cut them in order to remove the motor.

Tuesday, Jan. 11

A 57-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested for DUI after police responded to a report of a car blocking traffic on Oakes Ave. at Anacopper Rd. Witnesses reported that a woman was standing next to the car.  Officers observed the car as it was turning around in a nearby driveway.  They followed it eastbound and it turned onto Hartford without signaling and entered the northbound lane of traffic going southbound.  After officers were to stop the car, the driver reportedly told officers she was really intoxicated and could not perform field sobriety tests.  She showed obvious signs of intoxication and reportedly had an open container of alcohol in her car.  She was arrested and transported to the Police Department for a BAC test. 

Wednesday, Jan 12

An Anacortes woman complained that she and her husband were being hounded by a phone scam artist.  The woman explained someone claiming to be with the American Dream Foundation called and wanted $7,000 in order for them to receive their $793,000 prize.  The woman thought it was a scam and told the caller no thanks.  She received 3 more calls from the company all early in the morning.  The phone number on the call came from a Henderson, Nevada number.  An officer called the number and asked them to stop calling and warned them that further calls could result in prosecution.

A 60-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for violating a No Contact Order.  Police received a call from a woman in the 600 block of Commercial Ave. who state there was a court order prohibiting the man from coming within 100 yard of a shop in the 600 block of Commercial Ave. where she works.  She told officers she was just behind the shop and the man was there. He made no attempts to walk away and just looked at her.  She turned walked back into the shop and called police.  Officers contacted the man at his residence and he reportedly admitted being in the area and seeing the woman.
