The Police Blotter, Dec. 19, 2010

Officers were invited to a wedding in the 2700 block of “J” Ave. to mediate a disagreement between two bridesmaids on Sunday, Dec. 12.  One woman was upset that she was asked to step down from her role as a bridesmaid. A shouting match ensued in the parking lot.  Officers assisted in restoring peace and left prior to the nuptials. 

Here are some of the other cases Anacortes Police worked this week.

Friday, Dec. 10

Child Protective Services contacted Anacortes Police Dept. and asked officers to check an address in the 800 block of 29th St. for a 15-year-old boy who ran away from their custody in Spokane.  Officers checked the address and asked the resident who was also the boy’s mother, if he was there.  The woman said he was not there, but allowed officers to check the apartment where they found the boy.  As he had several outstanding misdemeanor arrest warrants he was arrested and taken to juvenile detention.

Officers received a call that a maroon colored car was westbound on SR 20 and it appeared that the driver might be intoxicated as the vehicle was speeding up, slowing down and swerving in and out of the lane of travel.  An officer caught up with the vehicle as it entered the city on Commercial Ave.  After observing the erratic driving, the officer stopped the vehicle and the driver submitted to field sobriety tests including a portable breath test.  The man failed the test but had a low PBT reading. The man told the officer he was taking some prescription medication.  A drug recognition expert was called from the State Patrol. He took custody of the man and arrested him for driving while under the influence of drugs. 

Saturday, Dec. 11

A 21-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia following a routine traffic stop.  An officer spotted the man driving a Honda in the downtown area.  The vehicle was traveling faster than the 20 mph posted limit and the officer stopped it in the 900 block of Commercial Ave.  The officer smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the car and when asked about it the driver produced a small bag of marijuana and a pipe from the glove box. 

A 60-year-old Seattle man was cited for negligent driving in the first degree.  An officer observed the 2033 Acura sedan speeding in the 2400 block of Commercial Ave.  After stopping the vehicle he observed the man showed signs of intoxication but they did not rise to the level of a DUI.  The man was cited and released.

Sunday, Dec. 12

A 33-year-old Stanwood women is facing charges of DUI following a traffic stop on “Q” Ave. early Sunday morning.  The vehicle the woman was driving did not come to a stop at the intersection of 4th and “Q” Ave. and proceeded south on “Q” Ave. The vehicle crossed the center line several times and its speed fluctuated well below the posted limit.   The driver was arrested for DUI after she failed physical sobriety tests.  The officers reported she told them that she could not take the breathalyzer test so she was taken to the hospital for a blood draw. 

Officers received a call of a car striking a house in the 1400 block of Georgia.  On their arrival they did not locate the car but did see where a car had driven through some flower beds.  Reportedly the couple in the house had argued, the husband left and drove over the flowerbeds.  His wife told officers he was intoxicated.  Officers located the 59-year-old man in his vehicle near Little Cranberry Lake.  He was intoxicated, was arrested and transported to the Police Department for a blood alcohol test.

Monday, Dec. 13

A 23-year-old Sedro-Woolley man was arrested for DUI after a fellow motorist called 911 to report the man driving erratically on SR 20 at Reservation Rd.. Officers caught up with the man as his vehicle entered the city on SR 20.  Following the light at SR 20 and R Ave. the man’s car drifted into the eastbound turn lane of oncoming traffic. The car swerved back into the proper lane to negotiate the roundabout.  Officers stopped the car in the 3300 block of Commercial Ave.  The driver appeared intoxicated, had open containers of alcohol in the vehicle, and had an interlock device which had apparently been disabled.  The man was arrested and taken to the station for a blood alcohol test.

A 37-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for interfering with the reporting of a domestic violence incident to the police.  The man’s wife reported to officers that she had been trying to leave the house and her husband was blocking the door.  She did not want the situation to become violent so she tried to call the police to help her leave.  Her husband jerked the phone from the wall prior to her call being completed. 

An antique doll and some cash were reported taken from a residence in the 1500 block of 7th St.  The home owner was out of town since Thanksgiving and received a phone call from a neighbor on the 6th of December that a window was open at the residence.  The neighbor secured the window and when the homeowner returned today they discovered a collection of quarters, some cash, and the doll missing.  Police are questioning persons of interest.  

Tuesday, Dec. 14

An officer checking on businesses in the 2100 block of Commercial Ave discovered a man seated in a vehicle outside of a closed business.  When the Officer contacted the man he noted a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.  The 54-year-old Oak Harbor man denied any knowledge of marijuana in the vehicle.  A search warrant was obtained and less than 40 grams of marijuana was located in the vehicle.  The man will be charged with possession of marijuana.

Wednesday, Dec. 15

A Guemes Island resident reported that his car had been prowled sometime over the weekend, while it was parked at the ferry parking lot.  Thirty dollars in change was taken and the door lock was damaged. 

A 9.9 hp Mercury outboard motor and accompanying autopilot mechanism were stolen from their mountings off a boat.  The boat was trailered in the 900 block of 35th St.  Thieves cut the fuel line and the locking mechanism to gain access to the motor. 

Thursday, Dec. 16

Police were summoned to the 300 block of Commercial Ave. for a domestic disturbance inside an establishment.  Reportedly at 24-year-old woman had been angry with her husband and had removed his hat and then struck him across the face with it.  Witnesses told officers that the assault appeared to be unprovoked. The woman was arrested for Assault 4th degree domestic violence and taken to jail. 

While on the same call in the 300 block of Commercial Ave. officers recognized a 33-year-old Anacortes man who they knew had an outstanding arrest warrant.  They arrested him without incident and discovered a small amount of marijuana in his belongings.  He was cited for possession of under 40 grams of marijuana.

A 61-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested for threatening her neighbors in an apartment complex in the 1100 block of 29th St.  Officers looking into the threats discovered there was a long history of the woman threatening her neighbors and recently making threats to do serious bodily harm and kill them.

A 17-year-old Anacortes by was arrested for theft after he stole a tip jar from a fast food restaurant in the 2900 block of Commercial Ave.  Officers located the boy shortly after the incident.  He reportedly admitted to the theft but the money was not recovered.
