An angry beaver was trapped by Animal Control Officer Maria Padovan On Wednesday, Dec. 1 with help from the Street Department in the 3500 block of “T” Ave. The beaver had raised havoc by damming up ditches and culverts in the neighborhood. After his capture, the beaver was relocated to a nice place in the forest land where he could dam all he wanted.
Here are some of the other cases Anacortes Police worked this week.
Friday, Nov. 26
A resident in the 2000 block of “M”Ave. reported returning from a 10 day vacation to discover items taken from their home. According to the report a house sitter contacted the family while they were gone and said that a number of items were missing from the teenage son’s bedroom. Over $1,000 worth of electronics including a Play Station, PSP games, two iPods, Toshiba laptop, DVD player, and Nikon digital camera were among the items taken. Officers have been following up on leads but have not yet located the house sitter, who was gone when the family returned home.
A car rental business I in the 900 block of 25th St. reported that a 2005 Ford Taurus had been rented by a 56-year-old Coupeville woman on Nov. 11 and was suppose to be returned on November 13. They have tried contacting the woman to no avail. The car was entered into the statewide computer system (WACIC) as a stolen vehicle. On 11/27 the vehicle was discovered unoccupied in Snohomish County and was recovered.
Police responded to a 911 hang-up call in the 1700 block of Baker View Court. They contacted a 65-year-old resident who told them that her 40-year-old daughter and the daughter’s 37-year-old husband had been arguing so she called the police. Officers are well acquainted with the couple and were aware the man had five outstanding arrests warrants. Officers checked the home and did not locate the man but did locate some drug paraphernalia lying out in the guest bathroom. The 37-year-old woman was cited for the paraphernalia.
Police are looking for a 17-year-old boy in connection with a vehicle prowl at Fidalgo Pool. A woman reported that she had left her purse on the passenger seat of her locked vehicle and went inside for a few minutes to pick up her son. On her return, she discovered the driver’s side window had been broken and her purse removed from the seat. The purse contained a little cash, some credit cards, gift cards, ID, and a Cannon digital camera. The woman told officers that there were several scruffy looking boys in the spectator area that left as she entered the building. Police identified the boys and witnesses gave information implicating the 17-year-old. The purse was located and returned to the owner but all the credit and gift cards, cash and camera were missing.
Saturday, Nov. 27
Two 17-year-old Anacortes youths were arrested for Minor in Possession and/or Consumption of Alcohol early Saturday morning after they drew an officer’s attention because they were parked in front of a bar at Sharpes Corner. The officer observed two carloads of youth pull up to the bar and move things between the 2 cars. A short time later he observed one of the cars westbound on SR20 and Fidalgo Bay Rd. The Officer saw the car had an expired license and stopped the car. The officer could see beer inside the vehicle and the passenger of the vehicle appeared intoxicated. Reportedly the beer was left over from a party the 2 teens had attended. They were both released to their parents.
A 28-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested for DUI after an officer observed her vehicle speeding in the downtown area. The vehicle was stopped in the 1200 block of 8th St. and the Officer noted the woman displayed signs of intoxication when contacted. She was given voluntary field sobriety tests, placed under arrest and taken to the police station for a blood alcohol test. The officers reported that the woman did not perform the breath test and was offered a blood test. She refused both. She was cited and released to the custody of a sober adult.
Sunday, Nov. 28
A man in the 3600 block of W. 6th St. reported that several of his neighbor’s cars were egged overnight. None of the cars were prowled.
A 16-year-old Anacortes boy was arrested for Assault 4th degree domestic violence and booked into Juvenile Detention after his mother complained to police that he assaulted her. Officers responded to the 1200 block of 29th St. and were told that the mother had discovered the boy and his girlfriend in the boy’s bedroom. The mother advised that they needed to visit in the living room or go visit somewhere else. An argument ensued and the woman slapped her son after he used foul language. The boy then pushed his mother. Officers determined the boy was the aggressor and he was arrested.
A 29-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for DUI and Driving on a Suspended License Second degree after a truck he was driving exited a parking lot in the 800 block of 29th St. and spun its tires for about half a block. An officer had been sitting monitoring traffic in the 900 block of 29ths St. and witnessed the incident. He stopped the vehicle and immediately on contacting the driver, observed that he was showing signs of intoxication. The driver also had four outstanding arrest warrants. After failing field sobriety tests he was arrested and taken to the station for a blood alcohol test.
Monday, Nov. 29
Two outboard “kicker” motors were taken off boats in Skyline Marina overnight. Officers believe that someone scaled the fence and removed the 10HP Mercury and the 8HP Honda from their transom mounting brackets. Police will be reviewing video surveillance of the area in an attempt to identify the suspects.
Tuesday, Nov. 30
Police responded to a domestic complaint in the 3000 block of West 3rd. They contacted a woman in a basement apartment who explained she is estranged from her husband who lives in the main part of the home. This morning he entered her basement apartment and knocked her down for no apparent reason. Officers contacted the husband who reportedly admitted to arguing with his estranged wife and knocking her down. He 51-year-old Anacortes man was arrested and taken to jail.
A restaurant in the 2200 block of Skyline Way reported two items had gone missing from the restraint in the last two weeks. The first item was an $800 Fender portable stereo system. The second was a large aluminum ladder which had been left outside the business.
A delivery truck driver received minor injuries but refused medical treatment after he was struck by a car that was backing out of a parking spot. The incident happened in the 1000 block of Commercial Ave. The truck driver was standing behind his truck looking in the cargo bay. The driver was backing up and told officer that they were watching a subject with a cane and did not see the deliveryman behind the vehicle.
Detectives are looking for a 20-year-old Anacortes man who is suspected of committing fraud while working for a restaurant in the 500 block of Commercial Ave. The restaurant owner discovered the young man was altering tip amount on credit card receipt. The man admitted he had done it and was let go. On further examination of their records, the restaurant discovered the man had done this on more than none occasion. Police have not yet tracked down the man.
A 25-year-old Mount Vernon man was arrested for Malicious Mischief DVPA after police were called to the 800 block of 29th St. because a woman reported a man pounding on her door. While officers were en route to the call the man broke the door open. Officers arrived seconds later and arrested the man who resisted arrest.
Wednesday, Dec. 1
The woman from the 1700 block of Baker View Court (see Fri., Nov. 26) reported another problem with her daughter and son in-law. She reported to officers that last night she lent her 2001 Ford Explorer to run errands in. Her daughter and the car had not yet returned and she has also discovered a check was missing from her checkbook. Officers did not have good news for the woman. Her daughter and Son in-law both have suspended licenses and should not be driving. Officers also learned that her daughter had been driving the vehicle the previous evening in Mount Vernon and had been stopped by a Mount Vernon Police Officer. The daughter gave an incorrect name to the officer and was allowed to drive away. The officer later discovered her true identity. Last, officers reported that the son in-law had been stopped early this morning by the Sedro Woolley Police. He led officers on a short chase; crashed the car, and ran off on foot. The car caught on fire after crashing and was a total loss. Officers have yet to locate the daughter and son in-law.
A 24-year-old Oak Harbor man was arrested on an outstanding misdemeanor warrant and possession of marijuana and paraphernalia during a traffic stop. The man was a passenger in a car that was southbound on Commercial Ave with no head lights on. The driver identified the passenger as the car owner. When officers arrested him on the warrant they discovered the marijuana.
Thursday, Dec. 2
Animal Control Officer Maria Padovan was injured while trying to return a horse to its pasture at 27th and “H” Ave. The horse turned and kicked her in the face and chest as she was putting a lead rope on it. She was transported to the hospital and released shortly thereafter.
A 19-year-old Anacortes man was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear for an MIP charge after an officer discovered he and a companion in a car on top of Cap Sante lookout after hours. The man also had a small amount of marijuana on his person and was cited for possession of marijuana and paraphernalia.
