Anacortes Police joined volunteers to help retrieve a sick horse from a
ditch last week. The horse had fallen in a ditch in the 100 block of
41st St. on Friday, Oct. 8 and was unable to get up on his own. The horse’s owner used a back hoe to widen the ditch, then officers and other volunteers helped the horse stand up and get out of the ditch.
Here are some of the other cases Anacortes Police worked this week.
Friday, October 1
A resident in the 800 block of 29th reported an older Blue Diamondback bike valued at $40 was taken from the bike rack in front of the apartment complex.
An officer on routine patrol in the area of Seafarers Way and the Cap Sante Marina contacted an 18-year-old and an 16-year-old boy acting suspiciously around the docks. The boys were holding a plastic garbage bag containing 10 live crabs. As crabbing season is over, the officer asked them where they got the crab. The boys reportedly told the officer they took it from one of the commercial crab fisherman’s storage barrels. The crabs were returned and the boys were both arrested for theft. The 18-year-old was also cited for having a small amount of marijuana in his possession.
A family in the 1800 block of 37th awoke to a loud bang on their front door. The door had been struck so hard that a security lock had come unhinged on the inside of the door. No one was seen in the area but the outside of the door was dented.
An unlocked vehicle in the 800 block of 24th St. was prowled overnight. A college student’s back pack was taken. The pack contained a stethoscope, blood pressure cuff and other small medical tools necessary for their health care worker classes. Value of the stolen items is approximately $250.
Saturday, October 2
A woman in the 2000 block of “N” Ave. called police to remove items from her home that she thought her children had stolen and stashed at her house. The items included two cameras and a marine radio. Police are trying to match the stolen items to their owners.
A 56-year-old Guemes Island man was arrested for DUI after an officer spotted the man sitting in a vehicle on Whistle lake Rd. near Hadden Rd. The vehicle was parked with no lights on in the lane of travel. The officer briefly contacted the driver who said he was waiting for a tow truck but could pull off the side of the road. However he did not pull over but drove off. The officer followed the car, and observed the man was driving in a reckless fashion. He stopped the man and observed open containers of alcohol in the vehicle. The driver failed sobriety tests, was arrested for DUI and taken to the office for a blood alcohol test.
Sunday, October 3
A 40-year-old man is in custody for felony DUI after he did not heed officer’s warnings not to drive. Officers were called to a gas station on the corner of 24th and Commercial after the clerk observed what he believed to be very intoxicated men drive up in a truck. Officers responded and contacted the man who appeared intoxicated to them as well. Officers advised him not to drive, they offered him a ride home, offered to call a friend or family member, or taxi for him. The man declined assistance and said he would walk home. An hour later the clerk called back and advised the man had retrieved his car and driven away. An officer located the vehicle on SR 20 near Thompson Rd. and arrested the driver for DUI. Because of a previous vehicular homicide conviction, any subsequent DUI arrests the man has are charged as a felony. He was taken to the hospital for a blood draw and taken to jail.
A teenager in the 1700 block of 28th is facing residential burglary charges after he entered a neighbor’s unlocked house and video game. He reportedly told officers he went to the house when he knew the family would not be there. The boy’s mother found the items and called police.
Officers responding to a disturbance call at McDonald’s contacted a 23-year-old man driving away from the restaurant. The man pulled into a driveway on 24th St. He told officers he had not caused any problems, but officers reportedly noticed he appeared intoxicated. After failing field sobriety tests he was arrested and transported to the Police Department for a BAC.
Monday, October 4
A resident in the 5000 block of Rosario Way reported that their unlocked vehicle had been entered overnight and rifled through. Nothing appeared to be missing.
A small piece of burnt paper was discovered on an outside ledge on Island View Elementary School. It is unknown if it is related to the porta-potty fire reported there last week.
A 29-year-old Anacortes man is in custody for DUI, Hit and Run Driving, and driving with a suspended license following a vehicle collision he cause by running a stop sign NB on “N” Ave. at 15th St. Officers found the man's vehicle abandoned in the alley at 15th and N” Ave. They located him a short distance away. He was transported to the hospital for his injuries and for a blood alcohol test. He was then booked in jail.
A man reported that his kayak dolly was taken last evening from Kiwanis Park on 6th St ant the Guemes Channel. He had left the dolly on the beach and when he came back from his paddle it was gone. The dolly is valued at $100.
Officers responded to a burglary at some storage units located in the 900 block of 28th St. Several units were entered and officers believe two bicycles (a Specialized and Cannondale), an ice chest, and various hand tools were taken.
Tuesday, October 5
Officers responded to a vehicle prowl in the 9000 block of Molly Ln. A back pack, tie downs, trailer hitch, camp stove, and crow bar were taken from the back of a truck.
A resident in the 4000 block of Yorkshire Dr. returned home from work tonight to find their flat screen TV, lap top, I-phone, Zune, and $80 in change missing. The residence was left unlocked during the day. Police are following up with persons of interest in this case.
Wednesday, October 6
A woman who left her car unlocked while she made a quick trip into a store at Sharpes Corner discovered her cell phone, purse, and contents had been taken from her car while she was inside. Police are following up with leads on the suspect’s identity.
Thursday, October 7
Officers responded to 2 complaints of stolen bicycles. The first was from the 200 block of “T” Ave. A resident of a local marina said that his bike was taken from the rack where it was locked overnight. The lock had been cut. The bicycle is a black Trek valued at $600. The second bike was reported stolen at 1330 from the Public Library. The bike was left unlocked in the rack. The bike was a green Raleigh valued at $250.
Friday, October 8
Officers responded to a vehicle prowl in the 4000 block of Whistle Lake Rd. A phone, sunglasses and knife were among the items taken from an unlocked vehicle. Officers questioned a possible suspect who implicated two other young men. While the officer was interviewing the second young man, the first returned the stolen items to the victim. The victim declined to press charges.
