Police believe a medical issue may have been the causing factor in a one car fatality collision in the 4000 block of Oakes Ave. on Friday afternoon, Aug 27. Witnesses reported a red sports car was traveling eastbound when it crossed into the westbound lane and then went over the embankment. The driver and sole occupant was deceased when rescue workers got to the car. The coroner’s office is investigating the death. The victim was a 64-year-old Mount Vernon man.

Friday, August 20
A resident in the 100 block of 5th St. complained that a car was parked at the street end and was playing loud music. An officer contacted a 21-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman. They had both been drinking and agreed to call a friend to pick them up. An hour later a second call was received that the couple was still there and the music was loud again. The officer returned, cited both of them for disorderly conduct.
A resident in the 800 block of 30th St. reported that sometime since Aug. 14 a Honda 35HP outboard motor was taken from a trailered boat at his residence. The outboard is valued at $5,000.
A semi-truck trailer loaded with a container of scrap metal was taken from a yard in the 9000 block of Padilla Heights Rd. overnight. The trailer owner told police it would have taken a semi-truck to move the trailer. The trailer is a 1977 Fruthof, WA. Lic#3786UB, valued at $6,000. The container with scrap metal is valued at an additional $1,500.
A vehicle that was left overnight in a parking lot off of Market St. was broken into overnight and a wireless router and Alpine stereo were taken. In addition Cannonade bicycle and bike rack were taken from on top of the vehicle. A window in the vehicle had been left opened and was the point of entry for thieves. The total value of the items taken was $2,000 .
An Anacortes High School student selling “Sehawk Discount Cards” reported that 6 of the cards were taken from his back pack at the skate park. An officer recovered 4 of the cards from 2 suspects. The victim declined prosecution.
A 52-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for DUI after a motorist called in and reported that the man was driving erratically near 13th and “Q” Ave.. An officer caught up with the vehicle and also observed the vehicle traveling slowly impeding traffic, and swerving over the centerline. The officer stopped the vehicle and observed the driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. The driver was unable to perform sobriety tests and was arrested and transported to the Police Department for a BAC.
Saturday, August 21
A 25-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested for DUI after an officer observed a vehicle she was driving traveling strait southbound on “O” Ave at 12th St.. The intersection is marked and striped for a right turn only. After stopping the vehicle the observed driver appear intoxicated. The woman failed several field sobriety tests and was arrested and taken to the Police Department for a BAC.
A 27-year-old Arlington man was arrested for Assault 2nd and resisting arrest after he assaulted his mother and threatened other family members at a residence in the 1100 block of 29th St.. The man’s mother told police that he came to the home intoxicated and highly agitated. His behavior woke some small children in the home. She said while attempting to calm him down, the man put her in a neck hold and put his hand over her mouth. The children fled the residence and alerted a neighbor, who called police. According to the woman he also made threats to kill himself and the whole family. When officers arrived they were confronted by the man who physically resisted arrest. An officer deployed his Taser and the man was subdued and arrested. The man is being held in jail on the felony charge with a $30,000 bail.
A 28-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for DUI after an officer observed his vehicle swerving in and out of traffic almost striking the right shoulder of the road as it drove down “R”Ave. After stopping the car the officer observed the man’s young daughter asleep in a booster seat. After failing field sobriety tests the man was transported to the Police Department for a breath test. The girl went home with relatives who were called.
An officer on routine patrol noticed a man and woman having a physical altercation in front of an establishment in the 400 block of Commercial Ave. After separating the two people, the officer learned the 31-year-old male and his 26-year-old wife were from Bellingham and were spending the night in a downtown hotel. Neither had serious injuries and it was determined that the husband was the primary aggressor. He was arrested without incident and booked into the Skagit County Jail.
Sunday, August 22
Officers responded to a complaint of a loud party in the 1600 block of 28th St. As they arrived they observed underage drinkers on the second floor deck of a home and in the front and backyard area. Several subjects ran when they observed the police cars and others went inside the house and closed the doors. Officers knocked on the door of the home but no one answered. Officers had gathered enough evidence to obtain a search warrant for the home as they knew there were underage drinkers inside. Once in the home they made 13 arrests. Two of the arrests were for warrants and the rest were for minor in possession and consumption of alcohol and furnishing alcohol to minors.
A 45-year-old Lake Stevens woman was arrested for Assault 4th and malicious mischief after police were summoned to a disturbance at Washington Park campground. Witnesses told police that a highly intoxicated woman had assaulted her male companion and then destroyed their campsite. Officers observed the campsite was in disarray and located the woman in some bushes nearby. She was arrested without incident.
Monday, August 23
A resident in the 4600 block of Kingsway reported that a camouflage colored Specialized “Hard Rock” 24 speed bicycle had been taken from their garage last night. Apparently the garage door had inadvertently been left open. The bike is valued at $200.
Police were called to Washington Park to a report of juveniles drinking at a campsite. Officers found about a dozen young people at the campsite. Several had been drinking. Two 19-year-old Anacortes man and a 16-year-old Anacortes boy were arrested and released on minor in possession charges. All of the young people were asked to leave the park.
Tuesday, August 24
A resident in the 1400 block of 10th St. reported her Acer brand laptop valued at $700 went missing from her residence recently. She suspects it might have disappeared on Friday night when her roommate hosted a party at the residence. Officers are following up on a lead in this case.
A Sedro-Woolley woman reported her car had been broken into and a briefcase taken sometime during the day at Washington Park. A side window had been broken out and the briefcase was removed from the back seat.
A man living in his motor home in the 2600 block of Q Ave. reported that someone had stolen his X-box game system and a Jazzman acoustic guitar from the unlocked motor home sometime during the last few days. Officers are following up on possible suspect information that the man provided.
Wednesday, August 25
An officer on routine patrol spotted a car in Storvik Park after the park had closed. When he approached the car, he saw a 24-year-old Oak Harbor man asleep in the front seat. On the man’s lap was a marijuana smoking pipe and next to him was a bag of marijuana. The officer woke the man up and arrested him.
Police and fire both responded to an explosion on a 30’ commercial gill netter boat at Cap Sante Marina. A 47-year-old Marysville man who was working on the boat received minor injuries when he attempted to start the engine and instead triggered an explosion that blew him from inside the cabin onto the deck of the vessel on Wednesday, Aug. 25. Bystanders responded to the fire with garden hoses.
Thursday, August 26
A 21-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested for Assault 4th domestic violence after she struck a 47-year-old woman. The older woman had rented a room to the younger woman and her 26-year-old husband. The women argued were arguing over utility expenses when the fight erupted. Officers later arrested the husband as they had received information that he had assaulted his wife prior to her assaulting the landlord.
Saturday, August 28
A 26-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested for DUI after an officer noticed her vehicle had a tail light out and tried to stop the vehicle to warn her about it. The officer followed her vehicle with emergency lights on for over two blocks prior to her stopping in the 1100 block of “O” Ave. The officer immediately noticed she appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. The woman failed field sobriety tests, was arrested and transported to the Police Department for a breath test.
A 76-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for investigation of felony DUI after he was involved in a one car collision on Fidalgo Bay Rd near the SR 20 exit. The man was taken to the hospital before being transported to jail. Officers believe he has had 5 previous DUI convictions.
Sunday, August 29
A 27-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for DUI and Hit and Run unattended after he struck a car in the 900 block of 21st St. and then left the scene. Officers located the man d the vehicle on 37th St. a short time later.
