The Police Blotter, July 31, 2010

A Police officer saw her on the phone while driving and pulled her over at 17th and Commercial.  There was a strong odor of burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle which ultimately led to the discovery of a small amount of marijuana and a marijuana smoking pipe.  The woman was issued 2 criminal citations for the marijuana and paraphernalia and an infraction for cell phone use while driving. 

Here are some of the other cases Anacortes Police worked this week.

Friday, July 23

A 44-year-old Anacortes man was arrested in the 6000 block of Whistle Lake Terrace for stalking his estranged wife.  The arrest came about 16 hours after she reported the 7th violation of a no contact order by her husband in the last 3 weeks.  The woman reported that this morning her estranged husband drove into a parking lot where she was seated in her vehicle.  He pulled in behind her, blocking her vehicle in, and began to yelling obscene comments. 

A 19-year-old Anacortes man and his 15-year-old girl friend were detained after Police received a complaint that the man had brandished a handgun at a west end basketball court.  The couple was located walking near Jasper and Marion Way.  The man removed something from his waste band and threw it in the bushes.  Police recovered a marijuana smoking pipe, but the couple denied having a gun.  The man was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.

A 65-year-old Mount Vernon man was cited for following too close when the vehicle he was driving westbound on SR 20 at Christenson Rd. collided with the left rear of the car in front of him.  The driver said he looked back to change lanes and when he looked forward again he realized the traffic in front of him had stopped.

Saturday, July 24

A 27-year-old Anacortes woman reported that her boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend keyed her 2007 Honda Accord while it was parked in front of his residence in the 2000 block of “K” Ave last night.  The 21-year-old suspect denied damaging the vehicle but admitted to being in the area.  Investigation is continuing.

A 9.9-hp Honda Outboard valued at $2,600 was taken from a boat in a west end marina. The boat owners last saw the outboard on July 11th.  Police believe this case is related to a sting of boat prowls in the west end. 

An 18-year-old man was cited for following too close after the car he was driving northbound in the 2300 block of Commercial collided with the car ahead of it.  The young driver said that he was adjusting his car stereo and looked away from the roadway.

Sunday, July 25

A 17-year-old Anacortes boy was arrested for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia after an officer contact him and another boy at the top of Cap Sante lookout after the area was closed.  The officer approached the car where the boys were parked and could smell a strong odor of burning marijuana.  A subsequent short investigation revealed the driver possessed a small amount of marijuana and a marijuana smoking pipe. 

Monday, July 26

An Anacortes woman lost her car and $545 in cash to a male roommate who is wanted in South Carolina and Florida for fraud and auto theft.   The woman reported to police that there had been an unauthorized withdrawal from her bank account to a cellular phone company for $545.  The only one with access to that information was the woman’s roommate, a 46-year-old man who was fairly new to the area.  Officers confirmed that the phone bill belonged to the man.  Once the man became aware he was a suspect, he borrowed the woman’s vehicle and did not return. 

Tuesday, July 27

A 22-year-old man lost his job and is facing charges of taking a motor vehicle, after he took a 27-foot powerboat that was moored in a west end marina for a joy ride.  A marina staff person became suspicious when he saw a man wearing a uniform for a local marine repair service board the boat about 5pm on Monday night.  The man started the boat and left the marina.  He returned at 9:30 with several passengers on the boat.  It appeared the man did not know how to drive the boat well, as he was having trouble getting it back in the slip.  The marina notified the owner of the boat who confirmed he had not authorized the trip.  After a brief investigation the suspect was identified.  There was $280 worth of fuel burned during the excursion and about $500 worth of damage to the boat where it appears to have rubbed against the dock. 

A 34-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested after she reportedly spit on her father during an argument at her parents home.  Officers were called to the 1100 block of 7th St. and after interviewing all parties involved arrested the woman for assault 4th degree domestic violence.

Wednesday, July 28

An alert resident in the 2000 block of Skyline Way reported seeing 2 men dressed in dark clothing in an inflatable dingy paddling around boat slips in the marina.  Officers discovered the boat abandoned on the beach near Cove Lane.  Officers believe this is related to numerous boat prowls reported recently.  The investigation is continuing.

A 22-year-old Deming woman was cited for following too close when the vehicle she was driving struck a vehicle traveling in front of hers eastbound in the 1500 block of 12th St.  The woman said she took her eyes off the road for a moment and when she looked up, traffic in front of her had come to a stop. 

Thursday, July 29

A 25-year-old Burlington man was arrested for Investigation of Eluding, and will likely face vehicle theft and DUI charges too, after police received a call that the man was driving fast on SR 20 near the spur.  The caller identified the man, who police knew to have a suspended drivers license and outstanding warrants.  An officer caught up with the man as he approached SR 20 southbound at Sharpe’s Corner.  The man failed to yield to the police lights and siren and continued driving past Lake Campbell.  Another officer was near Harold’s Market and deployed spike strips which flattened to tires on the 1994 Ford truck the man was driving.  The man then stopped in the southbound lane of traffic and was arrested.  Police noted it appeared he was under the influence of alcohol.  The truck belonged to his parents and had been taken without their permission.

A partially consumed bottle of liquor and a VHF handheld radio were taken from a boat that was left on a trailer overnight in the 1,000 block of “Q”Ave. overnight.  The radio was valued at $100. 

A 15 hp Mercury outboard was reported from a west end marina.  The owner had not been on the boat since 7/19 but discovered the theft this morning.  The motor is valued at $2,000.  Police believe this is related to the two men spotted early this morning in the marina.

No one was hurt when 4 vehicles collided on SR 20 on Thursday evening.  An elderly driver was westbound from Christianson Rd. and realized he wanted to get into the southbound turn lane at Sharpe’s Corner. He stopped his vehicle in westbound lane in an attempt to merge into the turn lane.  Two vehicles behind him were able to stop in time, the fourth vehicle was not and struck the 3rd vehicle which caused a chain reaction and all three vehicles in front of it sustained damage.  The elderly driver was cited for negligent driving and the driver of the fourth vehicle was cited for no liability insurance.

Friday, July 30

A 21-year-old Anacortes man is in Island Hospital with facial injuries after what appeared to be a bicycle crash in an alley behind the 1000 block of 27th St.  There did not appear to be any other vehicles involved as the bike was found in good shape next to the man.  The man was not fully conscious and was unable to tell first responders what happened. 

The Police Department is investigating 5 separate cases of graffiti that have occurred in the past two weeks.  Some of the graffiti appears to be gang related.  Officers found graffiti in the 2700 block of “T” Ave. and at Cap Sante. Citizens complaints in the 1300 block of 6th St., 2000 block of “N” Ave., and on the glass of several vacant building on Commercial Ave.  Police are asking anyone with information about the graffiti to call the Anacortes Police tip line at 299-1985. 

Two additional boats were discovered prowled in the west end marina.  No further information is available at this time.
