Four cars in the south end of the city were prowled over the weekend of June 18-20. All the vehicles were left unlocked. Numerous expensive items such as digital cameras, cell phones, lap tops, GPS, and a stethoscope were taken. A wallet, cash, credit cards and identification was also taken. Police remind residents to remove all valuables from their vehicles and to lock their cars.
Here are some of the other cases Anacortes Police worked this week.
Friday, June 18
A 6-hp Evinrude Outboard motor valued at $1,000 was reported stolen from a sailboat in dry storage in the 2400 block of “T”Ave. The owner reported he last visited the boat on 5/19 and the blue outboard was locked to the davit.
A 32-year-old Anacortes man was cited for Malicious Mischief 3rd degree after he slashed the tires on at delivery van on 8th St. near the Guemes Ferry parking lot. The man was unhappy with the business as he had previously been employed there and felt he was unjustly treated.
An Anacortes woman and her husband reported that sometime in the last day, the woman had lost a white gold engagement ring with a one large round diamond in the center and a smaller diamond on each hand. The ring was valued at over $9,000.
An officer pulling out of the Police Station observed a blue car on 24th St. being driven by a woman who he had previously arrested for a suspended drivers license. The woman’s vehicle began to accelerate away at a high rate of speed, eventually stopping at a gas station on Commercial Ave. at 24th. She was in possession of a prescription drug without a valid prescription and was cited for that as well as driving while suspended fourth degree.
A 32-year-old Anacortes man was cited for driving while license suspended and failure to have an ignition interlock device in the 3,000 block of Commercial Ave. An officer observed the man driving a green Dodge Intrepid and had information that the man’s license was suspended. After stopping the vehicle he observed the driver did not have the court ordered ignition interlock device.
Saturday, June 19
A 15-year-old Anacortes boy was arrested for assaulting his mother in the 800 block of 28th St. The two had argued after the boy broke some items including a mirror. He allegedly shoved his mother who fell onto an item and lacerated her head.
Officers stopped a 32-year-old Bellingham woman in the area of SR 20 and “R” Ave. after Washington State Patrol and APD received numerous calls about her poor driving. The woman’s 2005 Dodge Neon allegedly struck a guardrail and was driving on a flat right front tire. The woman failed physical sobriety tests and appeared to be under the influence of narcotics. A drug recognition expert from WSP was called to investigate and the woman was arrested for DUI.
Sunday, June 20
A gold colored HP laptop computer valued at $1,400 was taken from inside a residence in the 3200 block of Field Ave. Several people had access to the home during the time frame in which the computer went missing. All denied involvement in the theft.
Monday, June 21
Over $10,000 worth of stereo equipment, a flat screen television, a lap top computer and computer monitor were stolen from a boat that was in dry storage in the 3300 block of “R” Ave. The stereo components included a Harmon Kardon rack system, Alpine amplifier and subwoofer, and Pioneer brand marine speakers.
A 15-year-old girl reported that while she had been on the beach near Curtis Wharf someone took her bicycle from the beach. Officers located a 37-year-old transient riding the bike a short distance away. He was cited for theft and released.
Tuesday, June 22
A resident in the 3300 block of Rice Court reported a Kawasaki cordless drill valued at $50 was missing from their garage.
A 29-year-old man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center after a travel lift ran over his leg. The accident occurred at a marine business in the 2400 block of “T” Ave. Washington State Department of Labor and Industries is investigating.
A black Specialized brand mountain bike was taken from an outbuilding in the 1600 block of 15th St. The bike is valued at $900.
An officer contacted a transient who was sleeping in the woods next to the loop road at Washington Park. The man immediately threatened the officer and then lunged toward him. The officer deployed his Taser, and was able to subdue the 53-year-old man. The man was arrested for Assault 3rd and felony malicious harassment.
Two trees in the Little Cranberry Lake forestland area we discovered scorched by a fire that appears to be intentionally set. Officers, Park Rangers, and Firefighters examined the scene and found what appeared to be evidence that the fire was intentionally started. Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the person(s) responsible. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Anacortes Police Department tip line at (360) 299-1985.
Wednesday, June 23
A 49-year-old San Juan County man will be referred to Superior court for possession of narcotics following a routine contact at the Cap Sante lookout. An officer patrolling the park noticed the man sitting in his vehicle on top of the lookout on Wednesday afternoon. A routine check of his vehicle’s license plate revealed that the plate did not match the 1987 Toyota he was driving. When the officer contacted the man, he discovered the man was drinking beer in the car. As this violates a city ordinance about alcohol consumption in a city park, the officer investigated further. The man also volunteered that he was in possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia. The items were seized by the officer and sent to the state crime lab for verification.
A 53-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for violating a restraining order after he returned to his previous place of employment in the 1100 block of 26th St. The man was arrested without incident.
Thursday, June 24
A Garmin GPS was taken from a vehicle in the 2300 block of 31st St. sometime overnight.
Officers issued multiple citations following a rear end collision in the 2900 block of Commercial Ave. A Toyota truck, driven by a 28-year-old Bellingham man struck the rear of a Chevrolet truck in front of him when the Chevy stopped for traffic. The Toyota driver was cited for following too close. The 46-year-old Anacortes man driving the Chevy truck was arrested on an outstanding warrant for driving without a license and was cited for the same offense.
