The Police Blotter, June 19, 2010

Unknown vandals punctured the tires of 3 vehicles parked at a home in the 2400 block of 13th Street last Thursday.  One vehicle had 3 tires damaged, and the other 2 vehicles had 2 tires punctured.  It appeared that a knife had been used to puncture the sidewalls.  The owner did not know of anyone who would target his vehicles.  Replacement cost for the tires was estimated at $1,600.

Friday, June 11

A 31-year-old Anacortes woman was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia after she admitted to shooting heroin while inside a restroom at Washington Park.  Park staff had become suspicious of the woman, and police discovered 3 syringes in the restroom when the woman exited.  No drugs were located but the woman admitted to using the syringes to inject drugs and she had numerous injection marks on her wrists. 

An officer stopped a car driven by a 58-year-old Anacortes woman for not wearing a seatbelt in the 1600 block of Commercial Avenue.  The woman smelled strongly of intoxicants and had traveled 4 blocks before finally noticing the flashing emergency lights and stopping.  She had slurred speech but said that she only had “a beer.”  The woman failed field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for drunk driving.  The woman later admitted to having “four drinks” and taking prescription pills earlier.  She provided breath samples that were almost twice the legal limit and she blamed her boyfriend for her drinking and driving.  She was booked into jail on DUI charges. 

A 16-year-old Anacortes boy was cited for reckless driving after the car he was driving rolled over onto its roof in the 2200 block of 15th Street.  Witnesses said that the driver had been speeding around corners before losing control, veering into a yard, and rolling.  The driver had his license for less than two months and also had four Anacortes teens in the car as passengers in violation of his intermediate license status.  Fortunately, no one was injured.  The driver was also cited for the license restriction violation. 

Saturday, June 12

A 70-year-old Anacortes man suffered cuts and scrapes after a car backed up and knocked him to the ground as he was walking near a hanger at the Anacortes airport during a recent “fly-in.”  The man also received several shocks from his internal defibulator and was transferred to the emergency room for treatment.  

An unknown thief entered an unlocked car parked in the 1600 block of 36th Street and stole the victim’s identification, $100 in cash, and debit and credit cards. 

Someone scratched a name into the paint on the hood of a car that was parked in the 900 block of 23rd Street.  Police spoke with a neighbor boy whose name was similar to the scratched name, but both he and his mother denied the boy was involved in the vandalism.  

An 8-horsepower Yamaha outboard motor valued at $1,800 was stolen off of a Zodiac dinghy that was onboard a larger pleasure boat moored in the 2000 block of Skyline Way.  The thief is unknown at this time. 

A 15-year-old boy was arrested for domestic violence assault after he allegedly shoved his mother at their home in the 1700 block of 28th Street.  The boy had reportedly been upset because he had been outside when he wanted to remain indoors.  The boy was booked into juvenile detention. 

A woman reported her 65-year-old husband became upset with her after he opened a drawer and chocolate chips spilled out at their home in the 3000 block of Rye Court.  The man then allegedly grabbed his wife by the shoulder and jerked it up causing it to become hyper-extended which later sent the woman to the emergency room for treatment.  The man also allegedly grabbed the phone and smashed it to pieces when the woman tried to call 911.  The woman had bruising on her shoulder in the pattern of finger marks.  The husband was arrested at the hospital later when he came to retrieve his wife.  He admitted to grabbing his wife and causing the bruising as he was upset over a “dirty drawer.”  He was booked into jail on charges of domestic violence assault and interfering with the reporting of domestic violence. 

A man reported that his 25-year-old ex-girlfriend had entered his home in the 800 block of 30th Street without permission, stole his car keys, and drove away in his Honda Accord without permission.  The woman allegedly later returned intoxicated to the man’s apartment and pounded on his front door while screaming at the man.  Police contacted the woman and she screamed at them and was uncooperative.  The woman was arrested and booked into jail on charges of domestic violence burglary and taking a motor vehicle without the owner’s permission.

Officers responded to a resort on Fidalgo Bay Road regarding the report of an intoxicated man fighting with guests at a wedding reception.  Witnesses pointed out a 24-year-old Mount Vernon man who was staggering through the parking area.  The man had an abrasion on his cheek and one eye was swollen, and he claimed he had run into a fence.  Witnesses said that the man was not a guest at the wedding and had been asked to leave after he continued to yell and be disruptive.  After initially giving the officers a false name, it was discovered that the man had four warrants for his arrest.  After being told he was under arrest, the man actively struggled with and resisted officer’s efforts to handcuff and reason with him.  The man continued to struggle with the officers and eventually had to be subdued with a taser.  After being medically treated and deemed fit, he was booked into jail on the warrants and a new charge of resisting arrest. 

Sunday, June 13

A woman driving on 32nd Street past Storvik Park reported that someone dressed in dark clothing ran out of the park and threw something at her car.  The woman said the object hit her car with a thud and liquid sprayed.  There was not any damage to the car and the object was unknown. 

A witness reported a possible underage drunk driver leaving Washington Park after the vehicle pulled out and several empty beer cans were left on the ground at the scene.  An officer located the vehicle a short time later as it pulled into a convenience store in the 1100 block of 12th Street.  The driver was identified as a 19-year-old Mount Vernon man who smelled of intoxicants.  He failed field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest.  An 18-year-old Burlington man who was a passenger in the car also smelled of alcohol and admitted to drinking.  He was issued a citation for MIP and released.  The driver was processed for drunk driving and provided breath samples that were twice the legal limit for someone his age.  He was cited for DUI and underage drinking and released to a sober relative. 

Monday, June 14

A resident of the 5600 block of Rosario Way reported that he believed a 28-year-old Anacortes man had stolen items from his house and his pleasure boat moored at a nearby marina.  The victim was missing a camera and two cordless drills from his home and a portable DVD player, a power washer, and the keys from his boat.  The loss was estimated at approximately $600.  The victim had befriended the suspect and allowed him to help with projects at his house and boat.  The suspect later admitted to the victim that he had taken his property, but he failed to meet the victim the next day to return the items.  Police are trying to locate the suspect to speak with him. 

A 9.9-horsepower Honda boat motor valued at $1,500 was reported stolen from a boat at a storage facility in the 8800 block of Stevenson Road in the past couple of months. 

A 32-year-old Fidalgo Island man was booked into jail on domestic violence assault charges after witnesses saw him “wrestling” with his ex-girlfriend at her home in the 800 block of 26th Street.  Officers spoke with the female who had a bloody finger and she said that she and her ex had been mutually fighting.  The woman was uncooperative with police and said that she did not want their involvement.  The man was later arrested at his home on Putter Street after the witnesses said he had punched the woman and drug her to the ground.  The man confirmed he had been fighting with the woman, but he said that she had started the altercation.  He was determined to be the primary aggressor.   

Tuesday, June 15

A circular saw, three electric drills, a box of drill bits, and a wooden cat house were stolen from an unlocked shed in the 4600 block of Devonshire Drive.  The loss was estimated at approximately $400. 

Police contacted a 63-year-old Burlington man inside of his vehicle parked near the 900 block of 9th Street after he asked an employee of the property if he could “sleep it off.”  The man was obviously intoxicated and appeared to have urinated in his pants.  Police assisted the man in finding someone to come pick him up as they did not want him driving.  He agreed not to drive until his ride arrived.  Police checked on the man a short time later and discovered his vehicle was gone.  An officer then located the man driving on SR 20 near Christianson Road and stopped him.  He was placed under arrest at which time he thanked the officer for trying to “give him a chance” not to drive earlier.  The man later refused to take the breath test as his license was already suspended for previously refusing a breath test.  He was issued a citation for DUI and driving while suspended and released to the sober adult who had originally been coming to Anacortes to pick him up.     

Witnesses reported an SUV traveling on Oakes Avenue was “all over the road and running over things.”  A witness followed the vehicle to a house in the 2500 block of Bryce Court where an officer arrived and saw the 51-year-old female driver staggering towards the house.  The woman fell against the side of the house as she tried to get in the front door.  She smelled strongly of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes, and had extremely poor balance.  The woman refused to identify herself and tried to slam the door in the officer’s face.  The officer entered the house and advised he woman she was under arrest.  The woman actively fought with the officer to keep from being handcuffed and at one time pushed herself backwards and slammed the officer into a door frame.  A second officer arrived and the woman was secured in a patrol car.  She was taken to the police station where she continued to be uncooperative and refused the breath test.  She was booked into jail on charges of DUI and resisting arrest.  

Wednesday, June 16

A resident of the 4500 block of Bryce Drive reported that he was missing four credit cards and a book of checks from his home. The victim thought the items had been stolen sometime in the past two months although there had been no sign of forced entry into the home.  There are no suspects.     

A gas-powered weed eater and two gas cans were stolen from a carport in the 2100 block of 34th Street.  The loss was estimated at $85. 

Police are investigating if a 33-year-old man violated the terms of a no-contact order by driving through the neighborhood near his estranged wife’s home in the 1300 block of 19th Street.  The order prohibited the man from contacting his wife or being within 500 feet of the residence. 

A 17-year-old boy was arrested for domestic violence assault after he allegedly shoved his father’s girlfriend causing her to hit her face and shoulder on a wooden dresser at a home in the 2300 block of 12th Street.  The woman told police that the boy had called her a derogatory name and threatened to “kill” her which resulted in her throwing a glass of wine at him.  The wine missed, but the boy grabbed the glass and broke it.  The woman said that she tried to walk away when the boy pushed her from behind.  The boy admitted to shoving the woman after she threw the wine.  The boy was referred to juvenile court on the assault charge.      

Thursday, June 17

An officer stopped a car in the 800 block of 27th Street for speeding on R Avenue.  The vehicle had also been weaving in its lane of travel.  The driver had difficulty figuring out how to get the window down, but was identified as a 45-year-old Oak Harbor woman.  She smelled strongly of alcohol, had slurred speech, and clumsy movements.  The woman said that she had “three” drinks and was “fine.”  She failed field sobriety tests and was arrested for drunk driving.  A small amount of marijuana was then found in her car.  The woman was processed at the police station and provided breath samples that were one and a half times the legal limit.  She was cited for DUI and possession of marijuana and booked into jail.  The jail staff found some prescription pills in her pocket which were determined to be a legend drug muscle relaxant.  She was then also charged with possession of the drug without a prescription. 

An unknown vandal broke a horizontal wooden fence board at a home in the 1600 block of 32nd Street.  The damage was estimated at $50. 

Police are seeking to locate and identify a woman who entered a medical facility in the 1200 block of 24th Street seeking pain medication and services.  The medical staff reported that the woman had been providing false names and addresses for herself and had left prior to being given any medication or treatment.  The woman left in a vehicle registered to a couple from Marysville. 

Friday, June 18

Someone stole a 6-horsepower Evenrude outboard motor from the dinghy on a 37 foot sailboat that was in a dry storage lot in the 2400 block of T Avenue.  A padlock holding the motor to the davit had been found cut.  The motor was valued at $1,000.
