A 16-year-old Guemes Island girl and a 17-year-old Fidalgo Island boy were both arrested for drunk driving after a car the girl was driving rear ended an SUV driven by the boy in the 900 block of 4th Street on Sunday, May 30. Although the girl denied drinking, she smelled of alcohol and provided a portable breath test that showed she was over the limit for an adult. She was placed under arrest and 3 drug smoking pipes were found in her purse. The boy said that he had stopped for a cat in the road when the girl’s car had struck him from behind. The boy also smelled of intoxicants and also denied drinking. He also provided a portable breath sample that showed he was over twice the limit for someone his age. He was placed under arrest. Another 16-year-old girl who was a passenger in the first girl’s car was arrested after she exhibited the effects of drinking alcohol. The subjects were taken to the police station where the drivers were processed for drunk driving. The female driver was charged with drunk driving and possession of drug paraphernalia and the boy was charged with DUI. The other girl was charged with being a Minor In Possession. They were released to their parents.

Saturday, May 29
Officers responded to an apartment in the 1100 block of 6th Street after it was reported that an unknown man had been sleeping on the porch for the past two hours. The man was identified as a 39-year-old Anacortes transient who had a felony warrants for escape from community custody and burglary, and misdemeanor warrants for previous domestic violence assault and obstructing charges. He was arrested on the warrants and a small amount of marijuana was found in his wallet during the search incident to arrest. The man was booked into jail on the warrants and faces anew charge of possession of marijuana.
A 53-year-old Seattle woman suffered back, neck, and shoulder pain after colliding with a car driven by a 68-year-old Anacortes woman at the intersection of 8th Street and K Avenue. The Anacortes woman was ticketed for failing to yield the right of way after stopping at the stop sign on K Avenue and then pulling out in front of the other car that was traveling on 8th Street and not required to stop. The Anacortes driver suffered neck, back, and rib pain.
A red and black Mongoose brand bicycle valued at $160 was stolen from outside of the Anacortes library. The bike had not been locked and the thief is unknown.
Officers assisted in locating a 15-year-old Oak Harbor boy and his sister who had become lost while hiking on the trails near Little Cranberry Lake. An officer hiked in and found the teens and escorted them back out to a friend’s house. The teens were uninjured.
Officers spoke with a 15-year-old boy and his parents at a home in the 1600 block of 15th Street after it had been reported the boy had been arguing with his father about a phone call the boy had made. The officer smelled alcohol on the boy, and after initially denying having been drinking, the boy admitted he had drunk vodka in the woods with some friends he would not name. The boy also admitted that he had punched and broken a mirror in the house in frustration over the argument with his father. As the boy was on release conditions from previous arrests, he was booked into juvenile detention on new charges of domestic violence malicious mischief and underage drinking.
Sunday, May 30
A home in the 1800 block of 37th Street was egged during the night and a paper sack of dog feces and wood chips was ignited very close to the house. Fortunately the lit bag went out before causing any damage.
Unknown vandals sprayed silver paint on the license plate of a parked car and on several mailboxes in the area of the 3400 to 3800 blocks of M Avenue. A further check of the area revealed derogatory words spray painted on a vehicle, a driveway, and telephone poles in the 1500 block of 38th Street.
A 15-year-old boy allegedly became upset with his mother at their apartment in the 800 block of 29th Street when she refused to loan him her vehicle. The boy then allegedly grabbed his mother’s arm, put his other hand over her face, and then punched her in the kidney area twice. The boy fled the apartment, but later spoke with an officer on the phone and admitted to punching his mother but only because she had allegedly kneed him in the groin first. The boy was located the next day when he returned home while his mother was away. He was arrested for domestic violence assault and booked into juvenile detention.
Officers responded to the report of a physical altercation between a man and a woman in a parking lot in the 2800 block of Commercial Avenue. Police stopped a 28-year-old Anacortes man walking form the area who confirmed that he had been arguing with his girlfriend despite there being an active domestic violence no-contact order prohibiting him from having any contact with her. The woman contacted police at the scene and said that she had been in her car in the parking lot when the man walked up and climbed into her car. She said the man then pinched her and turned off her engine and took the keys. The woman had visible bruising where she was pinched. The alleged assault in violation of the no-contact order made the violation a felony and the man was placed under arrest. A baggy of suspected methamphetamine was located in the man’s pocket during the search incident to his arrest. He was booked into jail for the court order violation and drug possession charges, but he did show officers where he had thrown the woman’s keys into some bushes.
A 48-year-old Mount Vernon woman drove her pickup into a ditch in the 600 block of 34th Street. The woman was uninjured but told the officer she was “buzzed.” She smelled strongly of intoxicants, was very unsteady on her feet, and failed filed sobriety tests. She was placed under arrest and taken to the police station where she was verbally abusive and profane to the officer and actually kicked the officer in the foot. When asked to take the breath test, the woman told the officer to “f… off.” The woman displayed several mood swings including telling the officer she wanted to kill him, offering him money to let her go, and making romantic suggestions. She was booked into jail on charges of drunk driving.
A 24-year-old Anacortes man who was already in custody in the county jail allegedly violated the terms of a domestic violence protection order by having his relatives call his ex-girlfriend to tell her he wanted to be with her. The order prohibited the man from contacting the woman, including through the use of a third party. The relative confirmed that she had contacted the woman on behalf of the man. The man was then served a criminal citation at the jail for the new court order violation.
Monday, May 31
A car and a pickup parked at a residence in the 800 block of 30th Street had windows smashed out by thrown rocks and items stolen from inside. Taken from the pickup was a Garmin GPS unit valued at $200 and stolen from the car was a Sirius radio control head also valued at $200. Total damage to both vehicles was estimated at approximately $1,250.
A woman who purchased a Garmin GPS unit from a 15-year-old Anacortes boy for $30 became suspicious when she read the police blotter of the local paper and saw that similar brand GPS units had been reported stolen in three separate incidents. The woman gave the GPS unit to the police who are trying to identify the owner.
A car parked at a home in the 2500 block of H Avenue was prowled and an iPod Nano valued at $125 was stolen. Also taken was a Cobra brand radar valued at $125. The victim said that the car had been locked and it was believed that entry was possibly made through pre-existing damage to the driver’s door window.
Tuesday, June 1
A children’s RCA brand portable DVD player was stolen from a car parked in a driveway in the 1800 block of 36th Street. There was no sign of forced entry into the car. The DVD player was valued at $200.
An employee of an auto repair business in the 1000 block of 10th Street reported the theft of vehicle scrap metal from outside of the business. The dollar amount of the loss was unknown.
Wednesday, June 2
An older unknown brand radar detector was stolen from an unlocked pickup parked in the driveway at a home in the 2400 block of 37th Street. Nothing else appeared to be missing.
The owner of a Ford pickup reported that someone had stolen a Garmin GPS unit valued at $225 and a Craftsman cordless drill valued at $150 from inside of the vehicle. The victim was suspicious that the theft might have occurred while his truck was being worked on at a local repair shop, but the manager of the shop refuted the victim’s claim.
A tip jar containing approximately $30 in cash was stolen from the window at a drive-up coffee stand in the 1000 block of 13th Street. Police are working with employees to review security camera video to identify the thief.
The same 24-year-old Anacortes man who had earlier violated the terms of a domestic violence protection order with his former girlfriend while in jail was issued a court summons for 3 more counts of violating the order after he allegedly sent the woman several text messages upon being released from jail. The man even called the woman while an officer was speaking with her at her home, but hung up when the officer answered. One of the text messages included telling the woman to not call the police. Police were unable to locate the man, so he was mailed the summons.
A witness saw a pickup truck almost strike several cars prior to pulling into the parking lot at a market in the 1900 block of Skyline Way and believed the driver was possibly drunk. The driver, a 56-year-old Anacortes man, was slumped over the steering wheel with the engine running when contacted by an officer. The man smelled strongly of alcohol, had heavily slurred speech, and slow clumsy movements. The man said that he had “a couple of beers” but that he was “okay.” When he exited his truck to perform field sobriety tests, he had to grab onto the door to maintain his balance. The man said he could not do any of the balance tests. When asked to recite the alphabet the man said “A, B, C” and then stopped and stared at the sky. The man was arrested for drunk driving and told the officer he was on deferred prosecution from a previous DUI. The man then refused to take the breath test at the police station. He was cited for DUI and released to a sober adult.
A witness reported seeing a man and a woman “yanking” at each other near a car in a parking lot in the 900 block of 11th Street. The man was seen pushing and pulling the woman in and out of the car while she was holding an infant in her arms trying to fend him off. Officers contacted the couple and the woman said that she and her husband had been arguing inside of a grocery store and that her husband had called her names and pushed her. The woman said that her 51-year-old husband had also put his hand over her mouth to stop her from yelling for help and that he had grabbed her around the neck. The woman had some fresh marks on her neck and face. The man confirmed he had been arguing with his wife about him looking at other woman in the store, but he would not talk about what else had occurred. The man was arrested for domestic violence assault and booked into jail.
Thursday, June 3
A woman reported that her 40-year-old boyfriend had assaulted her at her apartment in the 900 block of 23rd Street. The woman said that they had been in bed and had been arguing about the man leaving a pill on the floor within reach of a young child in the house. The woman said that she told the man to leave and pulled his shirt to get him up. She said that the man then punched her several times in the face and head with his fist and also grabbed her around the throat. He then left after telling the woman that she had “hit him first.” The woman had swelling and bruising on her face and head. The man was found walking in the 1000 block of 29th Street and placed under arrest after it was determined he was the primary aggressor. He admitted that he had punched the woman in the face once, but only because she had punched him first. He was booked into jail on the charge of domestic violence assault.
Unknown vandals loosened a fuel line connection and punched a hole in a fuel filter to an engine of a boat moored at a marina in the 2000 block of Skyline Way. The damage caused fuel to spill into the engine compartment. Repair costs were estimated at $300.
Someone pried the lid to a metal cash box and stole an undetermined amount of cash from inside of the public library. The amount of money stolen was believed to be less than $20. The cash box was attached to a rolling book cart in the lobby area that was used by a library supporters group. An unknown number of books were also believed to have been stolen from various carts and tables in the lobby area.
An officer stopped a car in the 1100 block of 12th Street after the car ran a stop sign and nearly struck the police vehicle. The driver was identified as a 30-year-old Anacortes woman who immediately apologized for almost colliding with the officer. The officer smelled the strong odor of marijuana coming from inside of the woman’s car and she admitted that she had marijuana inside of the car. She then handed the officer a baggy of marijuana she had removed from the center console. She also admitted to smoking marijuana a short time earlier. The woman was issued a criminal citation for possession of marijuana and released.
Friday, June 4
Officers responded to the report of people arguing in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 1100 block of 27th Court. It was learned that a 19-year-old man had been arguing with his 19-year-old girlfriend over the man not wanting the woman to leave as she had been drinking. The man also displayed signs of drinking and said he had a “few.” The woman had slurred speech, smelled of alcohol and said she had a few beers. It was determined that no assault had occurred, but both people were issued criminal citations for underage drinking.
Someone prowled a cruiser style boat owned by a Medford Oregon man that was in dry storage at a marine service business located in the 2400 block of T Avenue. A Honda 9.9 horsepower outboard motor valued at $2,440 was stolen off of the boat’s dinghy. The padlock securing the motor to the dinghy had been cut. Also stolen from the boat were a Westinghouse flat screen television valued at $380, two cordless drills, and miscellaneous hand tools.
