Police wanted to talk to a 45-year-old man at his home in the 500 block of Hillcrest Drive after a witness reported the man was driving very aggressively and almost hit her vehicle on State Route 20 last Sunday, March 14. When the man came to the door, he was completely naked. The man was also hostile and enraged towards officers and screamed at them to get off of his property. The man smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech, and ignored repeated requests to put on some clothes while yelling expletives.
The man was told he was under arrest, but pulled away from an officer’s grasp and slammed the front door. The man’s father allowed officers to enter the house and he told officers that he was alarmed by his son’s behavior. The man was eventually taken into custody inside of the home and he admitted to have been driving his car on the highway. The man was processed for drunk driving and provided breath samples significantly over the legal limit. He was cited for DUI, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. He was then released to his father.

Friday, March 12
A witness observed a pickup driven by a 74-year-old Anacortes man back into a parked car in a parking lot at a medical facility in the 1200 block of 24th Street. The pickup then pulled forward and sideswiped another parked vehicle. The offending driver then walked into the medical building. The officer learned that the driver had been scheduled for a medical procedure, but that it had been canceled due to the driver allegedly drinking to the point where he “didn’t know what day it was.” The driver was contacted by an officer and he smelled strongly of intoxicants, had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, and was very unbalanced on his feet. The driver denied having struck any parked cars, but did admit he had “a bit to drink.” When the officer pointed out the fresh damage to his pickup and the other two vehicles, the driver agreed that he must have hit them. The driver failed field sobriety tests and leaned against a fence to maintain his balance. He was arrested and processed for drunk driving and provided breath samples that were three times the legal limit. The man was cited for DUI, hit and run, and having no insurance.
An iPod valued at $225 was stolen from an unlocked car that had been parked in the 900 block of 10th Street. The victim also reported that he was missing $600 from the car, but that he was unsure if the money had been stolen or if he had just misplaced it.
A 37-year-old Burlington man was issued a court summons for violating a domestic violence protection order after he allegedly showed up at a home in the 1700 block of 12th Street demanding to see his ex-girlfriend who was visiting a friend at the home. The man was reportedly intoxicated and refused to leave when asked. An Everett Municipal Court order prevented the man from having any intentional contact with the woman. The man left prior to officer arrival and it was learned he also had a felony warrant for his arrest.
A 33-year-old Anacortes man was arrested in the 1000 block of 6th Street for having an outstanding warrant for a previous DUI charge. The jail would not accept the man for booking, so he was given a new court date and released.
Saturday, March 13
Shortly after midnight, officers responded to the 1900 block of Island View Place after it was reported that a car had struck a parked car and was trying to leave. Both vehicles were extensively damaged and the offending car was unable to drive away. Officers arrived and identified the driver as a 17-year-old Anacortes girl. The girl was unsteady on her feet as she exited the car and she admitted that she didn’t have a driver’s license. She also smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes and her speech was slurred. The girl admitted she had been drinking but declined to perform field sobriety tests while saying the officer “should just arrest her.” The girl was placed under arrest and it was confirmed that her driving status was suspended for a previous alcohol violation. She was taken to the police station where she was uncooperative during processing. She did finally provide breath samples that were almost twice the legal limit for an adult. It was also learned that she had taken the car she had been driving without the owner’s permission after leaving a party at a home on Hillcrest Drive. The girl was booked into juvenile detention on charges of taking a motor vehicle without the owner’s permission, DUI, driving while suspended, and underage drinking.
After receiving the report of a possible drunk driver heading into Anacortes, an officer located the vehicle stopped in the middle of R Avenue with the driver resting her head on the steering wheel. The driver, a 64-year-old Burlington woman, smelled strongly of alcohol and tried to hand the officer a credit card instead of her license. When asked how much she had to drink, she answered, “Enough.” She was also wearing pajamas. The woman failed field sobriety tests and was arrested for drunk driving. During processing, the woman said that she had four or five glasses of wine. She provided breath samples that were significantly over three times the legal limit. She was cited for DUI and released to a sober friend.
A 42-year-old woman was arrested for domestic violence malicious mischief after she argued with her boyfriend at a home in the 1100 block of 27th Court and threw a water bottle and an ash tray after the man walked away from her. The ash tray stuck in an interior door and left a crescent shaped hole. She was booked into jail.
Sunday, March 14
A 21-year-old Anacortes man was issued a criminal citation for theft and criminal trespass after he was caught stealing scrap metal from inside of a fenced area at the high school. The man admitted that he had jumped the fence to get inside of the compound. The man had removed two buckets full of metal. The officer checked with school officials who confirmed that the man did not have permission to be on the property or take anything.
A 45-year-old woman was booked into jail for domestic violence assault after she allegedly argued with her husband, pushed him down, and then bit him while they wrestled on the floor. The man had a visible bite mark on his face and a small cut on his brow. The woman admitted to wresting with her husband and biting him. The woman was determined to be the primary aggressor and was placed under arrest.
Monday, March 15
An employee of a business in the 900 block of 21st street reported an ongoing problem of gasoline being siphoned from employee and business vehicles. The business requested extra patrol during the night.
The Animal Control Officer is investigating a complaint that 2 dogs running loose broke into a chicken coop at a home in the 3800 block of J Avenue and killed a chicken. The dogs had been caught running loose several other times in the past couple of months. The dogs live at a home in the 2000 block of I Avenue and criminal charges are pending against their owner.
Someone got onto a boat parked on a trailer in the 400 block of 34th Street and stole four marine quality stereo speakers, a five channel amplifier, and a tonto cover for the boat. The total loss was estimated at approximately $1,400. The theft occurred sometime in the past month.
Tuesday, March 16
A resident of the 2300 block of 20th Street reported seeing an unknown man inside of his neighbor’s car. The unknown man was then seen carrying some items from the car and then leaving the area in a vehicle. The witness followed the suspect vehicle and led police to be able to stop the car in the 2200 block of D Avenue. The driver was identified as a 32-year-old Anacortes man whose car smelled strongly of marijuana. The man subsequently admitted he had marijuana and a marijuana smoking pipe in the vehicle and he handed the items to the officer. The man was placed under arrest and he then admitted he had stolen an emergency kit, a black leather portfolio, and a flashlight from the car he had been seen prowling. Those items were recovered from his car. The man was cited for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, and vehicle prowling. He was released on his promise to appear in court.
A Cannondale brand mountain bike valued at $650 was stolen from outside of a dorm room at the Shannon Point Marine Center. The bike had been unlocked at the time of the theft.
A resident of the 1000 block of 23rd Street reported that she was missing a digital camera, 2 rings including her class ring, a ladies watch, and her cell phone from her home. The woman was suspicious of a male friend who had been at her house during the time of the theft and been left unattended in a room where the items were missing from. The matter is under further investigation.
A 20-year-old Anacortes man was booked into jail after he allegedly stood outside of his apartment in the 800 block of 21st Street armed with a shotgun and told his estranged girlfriend to leave his home. The woman had come over to retrieve some belongings but had initially refused to leave because some of her property was allegedly damaged. The woman reported that the man had threatened to shoot her if she didn’t leave, but that he was unarmed when he made that statement. The man then retrieved a shotgun and told her to leave again. The woman said that the man never actually pointed the gun towards her. The man also allegedly threw some small rocks at the woman’s car as she was leaving. The man admitted that he had “lost his temper” and “took his gun out.” The man turned over the unloaded gun to police and he was booked on charges of unlawful handling of a weapon and malicious mischief.
A hit-and-run was reported to a pickup that had been parked in the 4300 block of Saint Mary’s Drive. The victim had heard the collision form inside of his home and then discovered the rear end of his pickup had been damaged. A witness reported hearing the collision and seeing a dark colored passenger car fleeing the area. The fleeing vehicle was believed to be green in color as green paint chips were found at the scene.
Wednesday, March 17
The outer pane to an exterior window on a home in the 1700 block of 10th Street was discovered broken. It appeared that someone had kicked the window to break the glass.
Officers responded to the area of 12th Street and N Avenue after a witness reported hearing what sounded like a fight and “popping” sounds. The fight proved to be unfounded when the officers located an intoxicated man standing outside of his home yelling and pounding on a wall. The man said he was upset due to being unemployed. The man agreed to go inside for the night.
A car driven by a 23-year-old LaConner woman sustained extensive damage when it was struck in the side by a silver colored SUV that then fled the scene at the intersection of 9th Street and O Avenue. The woman’s vehicle was knocked up onto the sidewalk but she was uninjured. Police are looking to locate the offending vehicle and driver that failed to yield the right of way to the woman’s car.
A 17-year-old Anacortes boy was transported by paramedics to the hospital after he was found lying on the sidewalk in the 800 block of Fidalgo Avenue. It was determined that the boy had been passed out due to extreme intoxication. At the hospital, the boy admitted to drinking beer with friends in Mount Vernon although he claimed he could not remember their names. The boy smelled strongly of intoxicants and his speech was very slurred. The boy’s mother arrived at the hospital and they were informed that the boy would be referred to juvenile court on charges of underage drinking.
Thursday, March 18
An officer contacted a 23-year-old Oak Harbor man who was sitting in an alcove behind a business in the 400 block of Commercial Avenue in the middle of the night. The man said that he had been arguing with his girlfriend at a downtown bar earlier and was waiting for a ride. The man had a warrant for his arrest stemming from a previous theft charge in Anacortes. He was arrested on the warrant and later released after being given a new court date as the jail would not accept him for booking.
Black felt tipped marker graffiti was reported written on the playground equipment at Tursi Park on Pennsylvania Avenue. A witness described seeing two girls walking away from the park as possible suspects. Using a phone number that was part of the graffiti, the officer’s investigation revealed that two 12-year-old Anacortes girls were responsible for the damage. The cleanup cost was estimated at approximately $200 and the girls face possible malicious mischief charges.
An Anacortes woman reported that someone had stolen the rear personalize license plate off of her pickup. The victim was not sure when or where the plate had actually gone missing.
Friday, March 19
A witness reported he was following a possible drunk driver that was speeding on State Route 20 coming into Anacortes. An officer stopped the car in the 2700 block of Commercial Avenue for having a burned out taillight. The driver was identified as a 22-year-old Hope Island man who smelled strongly of alcohol, had slurred speech, and bloodshot eyes. The man admitted he had been drinking at a bar in Bellingham. The man failed field sobriety tests and was arrested for drunk driving. He was processed at the police station and provided breath samples that were over twice the legal limit. He was issued a citation for DUI and released to a sober friend.
Shortly after midnight, officers were dispatched to a bar in the 7600 block of State Route 20 after it was reported a customer had stolen cash out of the register. A witness had seen a woman reach in the till and take some money, and when a bartender confronted the woman she returned $240. The bartender was not sure if the woman had returned all of the stolen money though. The suspect, a 27-year-old Anacortes woman, was located walking on State Route 20. The woman admitted to taking the money from the till and said what she had done was “stupid.” The woman also had a warrant for her arrest for a previous theft charge. The woman was booked into jail on the warrant and the new theft charge.
A 52-year-old Oak Harbor man was cited for failing to yield the right of way to a pedestrian after his van struck a 47-year-old Anacortes woman who was crossing the street at the intersection of 32nd Street and M Avenue. The woman suffered bumps and bruises after being knocked to the ground. The driver said that he did not see the woman as the sun was directly in his eyes as he was making a turn onto M Avenue.
