The Police Blotter, Feb. 13, 2010

The officer identified the driver as a 19-year-old Anacortes woman who claimed she didn’t know that she had backed into the other car that, it ended up, was being driven by her boyfriend who was following her to make sure she got home safe.  The woman had slurred speech, watery eyes, a flushed face, and was very delayed in her answers.  The woman denied having been drinking although the officer could smell alcohol on her breath.  The woman then admitted she had some beer earlier.  When she exited her car, she lost her balance and fell against the side of her car.  The woman refused to perform field sobriety tests, but she was placed under arrest for drunk driving.  A marijuana smoking pipe was found inside of the woman’s car.  The woman provided breath samples that were right at the legal limit for an adult, but since was underage she was cited for Minor DUI and possession of drug paraphernalia.  An officer attempted to contact the boyfriend at his home, but no one would come outside to speak with him.

Friday, February 5

The homeowner of a house in the 1000 block of 19th Street returned home and found the glass to door had been broken and the door unlocked.  The homeowner found several cupboard doors standing open and he discovered that someone had stolen a metal can containing approximately 15 pocket knives and two jars containing approximately $50 in quarters.   The knives were valued at approximately $300.  The victim also said that he believed the unknown burglar might have been inside of the house when he returned home as he found the front door standing open after he had came in the back door. 

Someone threw a small chunk of concrete and shattered the rear window of a canopy on a pickup that was parked in the 1100 block of 20th Street.  This vandalism occurred sometime during the night and the suspect is unknown.  The repair cost for the window was estimated at $300. 

Saturday, February 6

The windshield to a Mercedes parked in the 900 block of 27th Street was shattered sometime during the night.  The windshield appeared to have been struck several times shattering the glass in numerous places.  The car owner provided the name of a possible suspect, but an officer spoke with that person who denied any knowledge or involvement in the crime.  The “suspect’s” girlfriend also vouched for the suspect’s whereabouts during the timeframe of the vandalism.  Repair cost for the windshield was estimated at $700. 

Sunday, February 7

Officers responded to the report of an accident in which a car was in the ditch in the area of Kansas and W. 5th Street with no one around the vehicle.  While en route, officers passed two men walking on Oakes Avenue.  One of the men took off running when he saw the police cars.  Officers spoke with the remaining man, identified as a 22-year-old Anacortes resident, and he repeatedly said that he had been driving the car involved in the accident.  The man smelled strongly of intoxicants and was very unsteady on his feet.  The man said that he had “drank a lot” as it was his girlfriend’s birthday and that it was her car that he wrecked.  When asked if he would perform field sobriety tests, the man said that it would probably not do any good as he was ‘drunk.”  The man then failed a couple of sobriety tests.  The man was placed under arrest for drunk driving and he volunteered that he shouldn’t have been driving.  The man was taken to the police station for processing and he provided breath samples that were over two and a half times the legal limit.  He was issued citations for DUI and not having a valid driver’s license.  The man refused to talk about the other person who had run off.        

A 41-year-old Anacortes man was sent a citation for violation of a no-contact order after he allegedly telephoned his ex-girlfriend at her apartment in the 900 block of 23rd Street.  A court order prohibited the man from having intentional contact with the woman by any means.  The man had reportedly called to inquire about getting the rest of his belongings back. 

A woman reported a 62-year-old man had slapped her before leaving her home in the 6000 block of Sands Way.  The woman was very intoxicated and uninjured.  The woman said that the man had slapped her after she had asked him to leave.  There was no domestic relationship between the man and woman and she did not want to pursue assault charges against him.  The woman said that she just wanted the police to be aware that the man was possibly driving drunk.  Police were unable to locate the man or his vehicle. 

Monday, February 8

A 19-year-old Anacortes man was booked into jail for domestic violence malicious mischief after he allegedly struck his ex-girlfriend’s car with his skateboard causing the body to be dented in three spots.  The woman said that she had stopped her car on Q Avenue after seeing the man and that he demanded that she return some belongings to him.  The man then reportedly jumped into the woman’s car and refused to get out.  When the woman attempted to open his door, the man climbed out and started to hit the car with his skateboard.  The man admitted to causing the damage because he was “mad.” 

A hit-and-run was reported in the 1100 block of 34th Street in which approximately 10 feet of cyclone fencing had been run over by an unknown vehicle.  It appeared that a vehicle had entered a parking lot, run over the concrete tire stop, and struck the fence.  The repair cost was estimated at $500.   

Tuesday, February 9

An Anacortes woman received a telephone call from an unknown man who said that he wanted to talk to someone before he jumped off a bridge near Anacortes.   The woman had no other information about the caller.  Law enforcement checked the bridges onto Fidalgo Island but did not locate anything suspicious.  

A 29-year-old Anacortes man was arrested in the 3900 block of A Avenue on a confirmed felony warrant for his arrest.  The warrant stemmed from a previous controlled substance violation.  The man was booked into jail. 

Wednesday, February 10

An officer stopped a car on 41st Street after watching it roll through a stop sign and fail to use its turn signal.  The driver was identified as a 33-year-old Anacortes woman.  The officer smelled a strong odor of intoxicants on the woman and observed that her eyes were watery and bloodshot and her speech was slurred.  The woman said that she had “two cocktails.”  The woman failed field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for drunk driving.  She was taken to the police station for processing and provided breath samples that were two and a half times the legal limit.  She was issued a citation for DUI and released. 

The mother of a 15-year-old Anacortes boy reported that her son had threatened to take a whole bottle of pills and that he had walked away from their house.  Police located the boy and his mother near their home and the boy admitted that he had been having suicidal thoughts.  The boy agreed to have his mother take him to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.
