Those are some of the cases the Anacortes Police worked on this week.
Friday, January 22
A 17-year-old Anacortes High School student was referred to juvenile court on possession of marijuana charges after he had been sent to the school office for appearing to be under the influence. The boy admitted that he had been smoking marijuana earlier and pulled two baggies of marijuana out of his lunch bag. The boy admitted to police that the marijuana was his.
Police received 3 more reports of recycling bins being stolen from in front of residences on Bryce Court and Kingsway. The bins were all taken sometime during the previous night. These follow reports of recycling bins being taken earlier in the week.
Police responded to a home in the 2800 block of Shannon Point Road after receiving a report that a 25-year-old man was hitting himself in the head. Officers spoke with the man and learned that he was depressed and had not been taking his medication. The man denied offers to go to the hospital, but he agreed to take his medication and stop hitting himself.
Saturday, January 23
A 53-year-old Richland man was arrested for domestic violence assault after he allegedly pushed his girlfriend twice in the chest at a home in the 1600 block of 12th Street. The man had been upset with the woman because he claimed that she had been flirting with other men at a downtown bar. The man denied pushing the woman, but he was booked into jail on the assault charge.
Officers responded to the report of a hit-and-run to a car that had been parked behind a club in the 1000 block of 7th Street. A witness said that a smaller pickup with a canopy had backed into the parked car and then drove off. The driver of the pickup had reportedly been drinking in the club and officers were able to make a possible identity. Police contact with the man is pending and the matter is under further investigation.
Three vehicles parked in a lot in the 1000 block of 4th Street were struck by a pickup that had been trying to park in the lot. Witnesses had observed the collisions and had watched the offending driver exit his vehicle and walk away. The offending driver was contacted at a nearby restaurant where he was working as a waiter. He was identified as a 20-year-old Anacortes resident and he admitted to hitting the cars. The man said that his pickup was difficult to park and that he had planned to leave notes on the damaged cars later. The man later failed to go the police department as promised to further discuss the collisions, so he was sent a citation for leaving the scene of an accident (hit and run).
Sunday, January 24
Detectives are following up on the allegations that a 15-year-old Oak Harbor girl was touched inappropriately by a 21-year-old Anacortes man while they had been passengers in a car traveling from Anacortes to Oak Harbor. Investigators are trying to determine where the alleged incident actually occurred to determine which law enforcement agency has jurisdiction.
A 16-year-old Anacortes boy was contacted near 17th Street and Q Avenue as he was riding a motorized scooter. The boy had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for previous underage drinking charges. The boy was booked into juvenile detention.
After he was arrested on his warrant, the same 16-year-old boy mentioned above told an officer that he had been assaulted by a 17-year-old Anacortes boy in an alley in the 1100 block of 12th Street the previous night. The boy said that the other boy accused him of “robbing” him and that the other boy then hit him several times in the head and face. The boy said that he had also been kicked in the leg that aggravated a pre-existing bone fracture. Officers are attempting to locate the other boy to hear his side of the story.
A 27-year-old Anacortes man was transported to the emergency room for evaluation and treatment after witnesses reported him stumbling in and out of traffic on Oakes Avenue. The man had also reportedly fallen down several times and had almost been struck by several passing cars. The man was highly intoxicated and had an open can of beer in his hand when initially contacted by police.
A 27-year-old woman was contacted at a motel in the 2000 block of Commercial Avenue after her mother called to report that the woman was talking about committing suicide. The woman told police that although she was depressed due to losing her children in a divorce settlement, she had no intention of harming herself. The woman did have an outstanding warrant for a previous felony theft charge. She was arrested and booked into jail on the warrant.
Monday, January 25
A 17-year-old boy was arrested at his home in the 4000 block of R Avenue after he allegedly got mad at his mother and punched several holes into a bedroom door. The boy admitted to punching the holes in the door because he said he was angry with his mother for listening in on one of his phone calls. The newly damaged door had recently been hung to replace a door the boy had damaged on a previous occasion. The boy was booked into juvenile detention on domestic violence malicious mischief charges.
Officers responded to a domestic disturbance at a home in the 1800 block of 37th Street after a man reported that his 47-year-old wife had thrown a rock at his vehicle, was off her medication, and had a knife and was threatening to kill herself. The dispatcher could hear the woman screaming in the background at the time of the 911 call. An officer found the woman hiding inside the house and after briefly struggling with an officer she was taken into custody. A large filet knife was found on the floor where the woman had been hiding. It was then learned that the woman had thrown 2 large rocks that smashed the front windshield of her husband’s car while he had been seated in the driver’s seat. The husband said that his wife had grabbed the knife and threatened to harm herself when she saw him calling 911. He said that his wife had not threatened him with the knife. The woman was booked into jail for domestic violence malicious mischief with a request for a mental health evaluation.
An 18-year-old employee at a business in the 900 block of 11th Street faces theft charges after she was suspected of and admitted to a series of cash shortages that occurred over the past 2 months. The woman admitted to conducting sales transactions and then pocketing the money herself. The estimated loss for the business totaled over $850.
Tuesday, January 26
An officer stopped a car driven by a 29-year-old California woman in the 1500 block of 32nd Street for having defective brake lights. The woman smelled of intoxicants, had watery bloodshot eyes, and had difficulty removing her license from her wallet. She said that she had “a glass” of wine earlier. The woman failed field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for drunk driving. The woman was taken into custody and after speaking with an attorney she provided breath samples that were significantly over the legal limit. She was issued a citation for DUI and released to a family member.
At around 2 am, officers contacted a 17-year-old Anacortes boy in the 1700 block of Q Avenue after he jumped off his bicycle and tried to hide behind some bushes as the officers drove by. When asked what he was doing, the boy said that he had “fell” and hurt his leg, but he declined medical attention. The boy smelled of alcohol and he admitted to drinking a glass of wine an hour earlier. The boy said that he sometimes had trouble sleeping at night, so he rode his bicycle around town. He provided a breath test that confirmed he had been drinking and was placed under arrest. The officer transported him home and released him to his mother after they were informed the boy was going to be referred to juvenile court for underage drinking.
A man who was standing near his neighbor’s fence in the 4500 block of Queen Ann Way was bit on the elbow by his neighbor’s 9 month old Husky after the dog poked its head through the fencing. The offending dog reportedly got agitated because the victim’s dog was also near the fence. The offending dog was current on its shots and its owner agreed to fix the fence so the dog’s head would not fit through.
An Anacortes woman who had parked her car in an employee parking lot in the 1200 block of 11th Street returned to her car and discovered that the rear bumper had been damaged. No note was left and the suspect is unknown.
Wednesday, January 27
Anacortes Police assisted a Department of Corrections Officer in taking a 40-year-old man into custody at a home in the 800 block of 27th Street. The man had a felony warrant for his arrest for 1st Degree Escape. A woman at the home initially lied to police and said that the man was not there, but an officer had seen the man peeking out of a window. The man eventually walked out of the house and he was booked into jail on the warrant.
Police responded to a home in the 2700 block of Oakes Avenue after a man reported that he had been arguing with his 33-year-old son and that the son was refusing to leave. The son then left on foot prior to officer arrival and it learned that no crime had occurred. However, the son did have warrants for his arrest out of Oak Harbor and Skagit County courts. Officers searched the area for the son but were unable to locate him.
Police contacted a 24-year-old Fidalgo Island man in his car at the Cap Sante Boat Basin after it had been reported the man was possibly suicidal. The man told police he was distraught over recently breaking up with his wife. The man was extremely intoxicated and refused to say how or when he planned on killing himself. The man was determined to be a risk to himself and he was taken into protective custody and transported to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.
Employees of a grocery in the 900 block of 11th Street reported a woman had left the store without paying for numerous items in a shopping cart. These items included 3 cases of beer, prepared food from the deli, and other grocery items that totaled approximately $75. Employees recognized the woman and police are working on confirming her identity as a 58-year-old Anacortes resident. Police contact with the woman is pending.
Thursday, January 28
A car parked inside of a fenced lot in the 600 block of 30th Street was prowled after a door lock had been “punched” to gain entry. Damage to the door and lock was estimated at $250. The car held numerous items as the victim was in the process of moving, and the victim is working on providing a list of the missing items to police. The victim could only initially say that she believed she was missing some check books.
A 4-year-old Doberman is quarantined for a week after biting a 14 month old boy. The incident occurred at the boy’s grandmothers house on Sands Way. The boy was not seriously hurt.
A 44-year-old woman reported that her 38-year-old brother in-law slapped her during an argument earlier in the day in the 500 block of 3rd street. The man had left prior to the police being called. The man also called later in the day and threatened his sister in-law. The investigation is continuing.
A resident in the Skyline noticed an open window at his neighbors house and discovered the home had been burglarized. The homeowners are in Arizona for the winter and were contacted by phone. It appears the only thing taken was the family’s television set. The investigation is continuing.
A 20-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia after a routine traffic stop for a minor infraction in the 3500 block of “H” Ave. The officer smelled the order of marijuana emitting from the vehicle and on further investigation discovered a small amount of marijuana and a smoking pipe.
