The Police Blotter, Jan. 9, 2010

A 15-year-old Anacortes boy was booked into juvenile detention on burglary charges after he was seen inside of a coffee stand in the 800 block of 21st Street beating on the cash register with a hammer on Tuesday, January 5.  An officer arrived and surprised the boy as he was coming out of the door of the closed business.  When asked what he was doing, the boy answered, “Breaking and entering.”  A file cabinet inside of the business had also been beaten on and some food items stolen from the business were located with the boy’s possessions nearby.  The boy said that he had entered the business through an unlocked door knowing the business was closed for the night.       

Anacortes Police also worked these other cases in the past week.

Friday, New Year’s Day

Officers spoke with a 14-year-old Anacortes girl after she allegedly started a fight with a 12-year-old Anacortes girl at the bowling alley.  The older girl admitted she had started the fight by pushing the other girl.  The younger girl also alleged that the older girl had grabbed her hair and took her to the ground.  After police spoke with both girls parents, no criminal charges were planned. 

Saturday, January 2

A 16-year-old Anacortes boy was charged with drunk driving, driving without a valid driver’s license, and underage drinking after he drove off the roadway near the intersection of 41st Street and A Avenue, plowed through a barbed wire fence, and struck a tree.  The boy was unsteady on his feet, smelled strongly of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes, and admitted that he had drunk a “few” beers.  The boy said that he had looked down while changing a CD which caused him to drift out of his lane.  He then said he over corrected and lost control of the car.  The boy was not seriously injured, but he was upset because his mother did not know he had taken the car and he did not have a driver’s license.  The boy was processed for DUI and provided breath samples that were significantly over the legal limit for an adult and over five times the limit for a juvenile driver.  He was released to his mother.  The repair cost to the fence was unknown.     

Police responded to a home in the 1900 block of 23rd Street regarding a married couple being involved in an argument.  The couple had allegedly been arguing over the man complaining about having cravings after his decision to quit smoking and refusing his wife’s request to use a nicotine patch.  It was determined that no crime had occurred and the man left to stay at a friend’s house for the night.

An officer recognized a 28-year-old Anacortes man riding a bicycle in the 1800 block of 11th Street from previous arrests and was aware that the man had three active warrants for his arrest.  Two of the warrants were for previous obstructing charges.  When the officer stopped and informed the man he was under arrest, the man took off on his bike and sprinted away.  The officer lost sight of the man while he was turning his car around and was unable to relocate him.  The man was sent a citation for a new charge of resisting arrest. 

Four cans filled with crab with a total weight of approximately 400 pounds were stolen from a dock at a marina in the 1000 block of Q Avenue.  The ropes securing the cans to the dock had been cut with the repair cost estimated at $150.

A 27-year-old Anacortes man walked into the police station and turned in on an outstanding warrant from a previous DUI charge.  The warrant had a 90 day jail commit and he was booked into the county jail.     

A car driven by a 56-year-old Lake Forest Park man struck a deer in the 2600 block of D Avenue.  The vehicle sustained minimal damage but the deer was injured to the point of being unable to use its hind legs and had to be put out of its misery.

An officer stopped a car driven by a 53-year-old Anacortes man in the 3400 block of Commercial Avenue for not wearing a seatbelt.  The driver smelled of alcohol, had watery bloodshot eyes, and slurred speech.  He admitted to having a “few drinks” earlier at a downtown bar.  The man failed field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest.  The man refused to take a breath test but asked to take a blood test.  The man was taken to the local hospital where his blood was drawn.  He was released and later issued a citation for DUI. 

Sunday, January 3

An officer contacted a 30-year-old Sedro-Woolley woman who was walking in the area of 22nd Street and J Avenue after watching the woman continuously change directions and wander around several side streets.  The woman identified herself and it was learned that she had an outstanding felony warrant for her arrest for a previous court order violation charge.  The woman said that she was aware of the warrant and had planned to turn herself in to authorities.  That process was speeded up when she was placed under arrest and booked into jail. 

A laptop computer valued at $500 and a $75 gift card were items reported stolen from inside of a home in the 1800 block of 32nd Street.  The victim also said she was missing two watches, a necklace, a glass jar containing loose change, and two keys.  The victim said that she was suspicious of three men a contractor had hired to perform work at her house.  An officer later spoke with all three men who all denied any wrongdoing. 

Monday, January 4

An officer stopped a car driven by a 32-year-old Anacortes man for spinning its tires in the 1000 block of 22nd Street.  While the officer was talking to the driver, a female passenger exited the car and walked to a nearby apartment.  The officer then discovered that the man was a protected person in a no-contact order with the 33-year-old woman in which she was prohibited from having any contact with him.  An officer then contacted the woman at the apartment.  Both the man and woman said that they believed the order had been dropped, but the officers (and later court personnel) could find no record of it being dismissed.  The woman was then issued a citation for violating the order and released. 

A high school student had his 21-speed mountain bike stolen from the bike rack at the front of the school.  The student said that he believed the bike had been locked.  The bike was valued at approximately $100. 

Police contacted a 40-year-old Mount Vernon area transient inside a local laundry facility after it had been reported that she was yelling at other customers and erecting “barriers.”  When an officer approached her, the woman became angry that someone had called the police and she again yelled at the other customers.  The woman initially refused to identify herself and said that the other customers were afraid of her because of the type of pants she was wearing.  The woman eventually calmed and provided her name and she agreed to leave the business upon the request of an employee.   

Tuesday, January 5

A marine power supply converter and battery charger was reported stolen from a 40 foot boat that was being stored in a boat yard in the 700 block of 30th Street.  The device was valued at approximately $2,500.                    

A student at the high school reported that his pickup had been struck while it had been parked in a school parking lot causing a long scratch that ran the length of the pickup bed.  A note was left on the victim’s vehicle that said “Sorry” with $40 attached.  The note did not have any information about the offending driver. 

An iPod Touch valued at $300 was reported stolen from a student’s backpack at the Anacortes Middle School.  The suspect is unknown at this time.

A 20-year-old woman was arrested for violating a no-contact order after she was found hiding in a bedroom at her parent’s house in the 3700 block of W. 7th Street.  The order prevented her from contacting her parents or being at the house.  The woman also had five warrants for her arrest from previous domestic violence, underage drinking, and no-contact order violations.  She was booked into jail on the new charge and the warrants.

Officers responded to the report of suspicious people near the gazebo at Rotary Park who were in the park after hours.  A 22-year-old man was contacted up the hill at the lookout with several beer cans around him.  The man told the officer he had some marijuana in his pocket and handed the officer a baggy containing a small amount.  The man was cited for possession of marijuana and consuming alcohol in a City park.  The man mentioned that other people had been with him and a 20-year-old woman was found hiding in the brush.  She displayed the effects of drinking alcohol and admitted she had “a little.”  The woman was cited for underage drinking and released.     

Wednesday, January 6

Two men were arrested at a store in the 900 block of 11th Street after it was learned the both had warrants for their arrest.  A 26-year-old Oak Harbor man had a felony warrant out of Clark County for unlawful possession of a firearm and a 23-year-old Anacortes man had a warrant for underage drinking and possession of drug paraphernalia.  They were both booked into jail.

Thursday, January 7

An officer stopped a car driven by a 28-year-old Anacortes man on 12th Street for not using his turn signal.  The officer smelled the strong odor of marijuana inside the man’s car.  When asked about the smell, the driver handed over two small plastic containers that contained marijuana.  The man was placed under arrest at which time the officer smelled alcohol on him.  The man said that he had “one beer” and he also admitted that he had two marijuana smoking pipes in his car.  The pipes were located in the car along with a baggy of marijuana.  The man failed field sobriety tests and admitted that he had two shots of whiskey in addition to the “one beer.”  The man was taken to the police station where he provided breath samples that were over one and a half times the legal limit.  He was cited for DUI and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.  He was released to a sober adult.      

A 49-year-old former Sedro-Woolley man was arrested in the 1700 block of 24th Court for having two outstanding warrants for his arrest stemming from violating a domestic violence protection order.  Police had contacted the man after receiving reports that he had been knocking on doors in the neighborhood asking for gas money.  The man was taken to the police station and later released after being given new court dates since the jail would not accept him for booking.  The man was also warned not to drive as he did not have a valid driver’s license. 

A 27-year-old Anacortes man was cited for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia after an officer stopped his car on Commercial Avenue for the driver not wearing a seat belt.  The officer smelled marijuana and the man admitted he had a marijuana smoking pipe in his pocket.  He handed the pipe to the officer and was placed under arrest.  A small amount of marijuana was found in his pant pocket. 

An Anacortes man reported his car had been prowled sometime during the previous week while parked in the downtown area.  There was no sign of forced entry into the car.  The man said that he was missing a vinyl messenger bag valued at $100, some prescription medication, and a $50 pocket knife. 

A 62-year-old Anacortes man was reported missing by family members. The man had reportedly left the previous day from his house for the Arlington area and had not returned home.  The man had a history of depression.  Police are attempting to locate the man to check his welfare.
