A caretaker for a home in the 4400 block of Bryce Drive reported a possible burglary after she discovered an exterior window screen lying on the ground. There was no evidence of entry into the house or anything missing.
The glass to a second story sliding door was reported to have been broken at a home in the 1600 block of 14th Street. A small rock was located near the door and was believed to have been the tool used to break the glass. The damage was estimated at $500.00.
Saturday, November 28
A 35-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for having two outstanding warrants after an officer stopped the car he was driving due to the man not wearing a seatbelt. The man also did not have a valid driver’s license. The warrants were for previous theft and suspended driving offenses. The man was arrested on the warrants and given new court appearance dates as the jail would not accept him due to overcrowding.
Officers were dispatched to the area of 30th Street and M Avenue regarding the report of a “fight” in progress involving two men and a woman. Officers located the people and learned that an argument had developed between a 20-year-old Anacortes man and a 20-year-old Oak Harbor woman over their failed dating relationship. Both people and the man’s brother who was also in attendance said that the matter had been strictly verbal and no assault had taken place. It was determined that no crime had occurred and the involved man was given a ride by an officer to a local motel.
Sunday, November 29
A fire hydrant in the 1200 block of N Avenue was vandalized when a valve was broken off by being struck with a pipe. A witness saw an unknown male juvenile hit the hydrant with a pipe which caused water to begin spraying into the air. The boy took off running with two other boys who had been standing nearby. The Fire Department shut off the water, and the damage estimate is unknown at this time.
A couple living in the 900 block of 37th Street reported that they suspected their 19-year-old grandson of taking their van without permission after the van disappeared from their driveway. The grandson had been living periodically with the couple. The grandson was also suspected of stealing $40 from his mother’s purse while she was visiting at the home. An officer later located the van as it pulled into a parking lot in the 900 block of 11th Street and stopped it. The driver was identified as the grandson and he was placed under arrest for stealing the van. The grandson admitted to taking the van without permission and stealing the cash from his mother’s purse. He also admitted he had used the cash to buy drugs and a small amount of suspected heroin and drug paraphernalia were found on the man and in the van. The grandson was booked into jail for motor vehicle theft and also faces felony drug possession charges.
Monday, November 30
A man reported that his estranged wife had “broken into” their home in the 2200 block of 30th Street after previously moving out and stole a pet dog. The man had changed the locks on the house after the woman had moved out and they had arranged for her to come to the house to retrieve some belongings. However, the man reported that the woman had called him and told him that she had already gone to the house and took the items she wanted. The man returned home and discovered a garage door had been kicked in and the door jam damaged. He then discovered the woman had taken her clothing and the dog. Police are looking to speak with the woman and are reviewing the possibility of criminal charges.
Police responded to a business in the 600 block of Commercial Avenue regarding a woman walking out with merchandise after the credit card she had presented had been declined and the clerk had momentarily stepped away. Using the name on the credit card, an officer contacted a 55-year-old Oak Harbor woman who confirmed that she had been at the business. The woman claimed that she believed the credit card transaction had gone through and she said that she would return to the store and rectify the matter. Employees of the business were asked to contact the police if the woman did not return.
Witnesses reported that two men had taken a glass vase from the lobby of a restaurant in the 2500 block of Commercial Avenue and smashed it on a car that was parked in front of the restaurant. The car was dented and scratched from the vase shattering on it. Based upon witness descriptions, the police located the men a few blocks away. The two men provided California identification that appeared to be phony and both appeared to be intoxicated. The men were placed under arrest for malicious mischief and transported to the police station. US Border Patrol agents were summoned and they spoke with the arrestees and determined they were in the country illegally. The men were issued citations for malicious mischief and released into the custody of the Border Patrol for possible deportation.
Officers responded to a home in the 2400 block of 41st Street after a man reported his 22-year-old girlfriend had assaulted him by throwing several pieces of decorative coral at him during the course of an argument. The man had fresh cuts on his arm, hand, and neck and shattered coral was scattered on the floor of the house. The man also reported that while he had been speaking with the 911 dispatcher, the woman had grabbed the phone from his hand and broke it in two. An officer located half the phone, but could not find the second piece. Officers located the woman crouching near a fence in the back yard of the home. The woman was obviously intoxicated and she was placed under arrest. The woman was booked into jail on domestic violence assault, malicious mischief, and interfering with the reporting of domestic violence charges.
Tuesday, December 1
A student reported that someone had stolen her classic iPod and an iPod Touch device from her backpack at the High School library. The student said that she had set her backpack down while she had been working at a computer nearby. The stolen items were each valued at $200.
A hit and run was reported to a pickup parked in an employee parking lot in the 2200 block of 37th Street. The victim discovered a dent to the front left side of the pickup when he returned to the vehicle during his lunch time. The damage was estimated at over $500.
A 15-year-old Anacortes boy suffered a possible arm fracture after the bicycle he was riding was struck by a car driven by a 34-year-old Anacortes woman. The car had stopped for the stop sign at N Avenue and then turned right onto 12th Street. The driver didn’t see the cyclist that had been riding on the sidewalk prior to entering the roadway. The cyclist said that he assumed the driver of the car had seen him.
A 50-year-old Anacortes man was booked into jail on investigation of felony assault after he allegedly pointed a shotgun while seated in his vehicle at the father of his step-daughter’s baby. The incident occurred outside of a home in the 800 block of N Avenue after the suspect had reportedly driven from his home to confront the other man. The suspect was allegedly upset about the other man over-accelerating his car after he had picked up his child for visitation. The victim claimed that the suspect had “racked” the shotgun and pointed it towards him, but witnesses said that the suspect had only held the shotgun and never racked it. The suspect was later located at a home near LaConner and was taken into custody with the help of the Swinomish Tribal Police. The suspect appeared to be intoxicated and told an officer that he was “ashamed” of himself. He also commented that he had only pointed a piece of lumber at the other man. A small amount of suspected cocaine was also found in the suspect’s pocket when he was being booked. The incident is under further investigation.
Wednesday, December 2
An officer stopped a vehicle in the 900 block of 17th Street after he had seen it weaving on Commercial Avenue. Witnesses had also reported that two men who were intoxicated had left in the vehicle from a downtown bar a short time earlier. The driver was identified as a 34-year-old Woodinville man who smelled strongly of intoxicants, slurred speech, and clumsy movements. The man claimed he had only had “one beer” but he also said that he had taken “a whole bunch of pills.” The man failed field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for drunk driving. The man later admitted he had “three beers” and that he knew he shouldn’t have been mixing his medication and alcohol. He refused to take the breath test. He was issued a citation for DUI and was booked into the county jail.
Thursday, December 3
Over $15,000 in jewelry and a bottle of prescription pain medication were items reported stolen over the past 6 months from a home in the 4200 block of Shelby Court. The victims provided the name of a possible suspect and the matter is under further investigation.
A 32-year-old Anacortes man is suspected of writing numerous checks on a closed account for alcohol at area State liquor stores over the past month, including the Anacortes store. The man had recently been arrested in Oak Harbor for writing bad checks and Anacortes authorities are looking to speak with the man about his local check writing activity.
A student at Mount Erie Elementary School had her cell phone stolen from her backpack while at school. Phone records showed a number that had been called right after the phone had been stolen. Police then contacted another student from the school whose phone number matched the recorded call at her residence and recovered the phone. The suspect student admitted she had stolen the phone. The victim and her family did not want to pursue criminal charges and the suspect’s mother said that she would discipline her child.
A 28-year-old Tacoma man was arrested at a home in the 1500 block of Burrows Court for violating the terms of a domestic violence protection order out of a Pierce County court. The order prohibited the man from having contact with his estranged wife and two children who lived at the home. Police had initially been called to the house to check on the welfare of one of the children. The man said that he had been at the house to watch his kids while his wife was at work. He was booked into jail.
Friday, December 4
Officers contacted a 49-year-old Anacortes man at a pay phone in a marina in the 1000 block of Q Avenue after he had called 911 to report that he had put a gun to his head. The man told police that he was despondent over financial and medical issues which led to his suicidal thoughts. Officers located a pistol in the man’s car after the man informed them of the gun’s location. Officers took the pistol for safekeeping and the man was taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.
