An officer contacted an 85-year-old woman at her residence in the 6900 block of State Route 20 after the front bumper to her car was found at the scene of an accident at Sharpes Corner. Officers were able to locate the woman since her license plate was found lying next to her bumper. A witness told officers that the woman’s car had struck a pickup in front of her that was stopped for traffic. The woman told officers that she had hit another vehicle from behind when she had looked away momentarily and then left the scene because she was “scared” of the police. The woman had a suspended driver’s license and no insurance. Her car was found in her garage with fresh damage and the front bumper missing. The other involved vehicle also left the scene and its license number and driver are unknown. The woman was issued a citation for driving with a suspended license and driving without insurance.
Saturday, November 14
A woman reported her 75-year-old neighbor had allegedly shot a deer in his yard with a BB gun. The man told an officer that he was frustrated with the deer constantly eating his plants. He said the deer were so tame that they were difficult to scare away. The man said that he did not want to hurt the deer, but just scare them off. The man was educated on the ordinance prohibiting the shooting of BB guns and he said that he would no longer use the gun.
Police detectives are investigating allegations that a 20-year-old former Anacortes man currently living in California had an ongoing sexual relationship with a 15-year-old Anacortes girl. The relationship had allegedly begun when the man was 19 and the girl was 14 during a period of time when the man lived at the girl’s home in Anacortes. The girl said that the relationship was consensual, but police are investigating the matter as a crime due to the girl’s age and the age difference between her and the man.
Sunday, November 15
Officers responded to an apartment in the 900 block of 23rd Street regarding a woman reporting that she was arguing with her 14-year-old daughter about a teenaged male reportedly texting the girl saying that he was going to bring her cocaine. The girl was throwing things around the apartment when officers arrived and she yelled at them. She said that she was upset because her mother had called the police. No property was damaged during the girl’s tirade and she was counseled about her behavior and her choices about selecting her friends. The mother was advised to seek a no-contact order against the boy.
A 23-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested for drunk driving after an officer stopped the car she was driving for speeding on March’s Point Road. The woman smelled of intoxicants, had slurred speech and a flushed face, and initially said that she had “one” drink at a casino. The woman failed field sobriety tests and was taken into custody and transported to the police station. She provided breath samples that were significantly over the legal limit and she said that she had “two” drinks. She was issued a citation for DUI and released to a sober relative.
A man walking his dog in the 5100 block of Kingsway reported that he and his dog had been confronted by two snapping and snarling mixed breed dogs that had come running up to them. The man said that he was able to fend off the dogs without him or his dog getting hurt. The man said that he believed the dogs lived at a residence in the 5500 block of Kingsway. An officer later spoke with the owner of the loose dogs who said that she had no idea how the dogs had gotten out of their fenced yard. The Animal Control Officer will be following up with the offending dog owner.
A 20-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested at her parent’s home in the 3700 block of W. 7th Street after she violated a no-contact order that prohibited from her being at the house or having intentional contact with her parents. The woman appeared to be intoxicated and had been yelling at her parents to let her in the house to “get her stuff.” The woman was placed under arrest for the no-contact order violation. The parents then informed officers that the woman had taken the front porch light and struck her father in the head. The light was in pieces on the porch. The father declined medical attention but the daughter was also charged with domestic violence assault. The daughter was booked into jail.
A woman reported that her husband punched holes in the walls and smashed up several dishes and household items at their apartment in the 3600 block of Michelle Lane while she was away. The 26-year-old man was supposedly mad at his wife because she was not home when he returned home from treatment at the hospital. Attempts by police to locate the husband that afternoon were unsuccessful, but the man later called a police officer he knew and admitted to “trashing” the apartment. While speaking with the officer on the phone, the man claimed he was out of town. The man later arrived at the police station and again admitted that he had trashed the apartment because he believed that it had been “okay” because he was breaking his property and his wife had not been present. The man was issued a citation for domestic violence malicious mischief and released.
Monday, November 16
An 18-speed mountain bike valued at $200 was reported stolen from underneath a staircase at an apartment in the 1000 block of 22nd Street. The bike had not been locked.
An older model car stereo/CD player valued at $50 was stolen out of an unlocked Chevy parked in front of a school in the 2600 block of J Avenue. The victim said that she had only been away from the car for a few minutes, and that when she retuned she discovered the stereo was missing. Nothing else in the car had been taken.
Tuesday, November 17
A resident of the 1100 block of 24th Street reported that someone has been letting the air out of her car tires periodically for the past couple of months. The tires showed no punctures or defects so it appeared the acts were intentional. The resident desired extra patrol of the area.
A staff member at the high school reported the theft of her jacket from a classroom. The jacket, valued at $300, had been hung on the back of a chair and contained $20 and a cell phone. The cell phone was later located in a girls restroom at the school, but the jacket and cash remained missing.
An unknown prowler was reported to have been outside of a home in the 4000 block of W. 5th Street during the morning hours. A teenager in the house had reportedly seen a head shaped shadow moving outside of her bedroom windows for a few minutes. The family was encouraged to call 911 at the time of the incident if it occurred again.
An officer stopped a car driven by a 54-year-old Anacortes woman in the 1600 block of Commercial Avenue for driving at night with its headlights turned off. The driver smelled strongly of intoxicants, had bloodshot eyes, and claimed that she had “one drink” about an hour prior. The officer saw a marijuana smoking pipe near the door handle for the driver’s door. The woman claimed that the pipe belonged to her roommate who had recently borrowed the car. The woman showed very poor balance during field sobriety tests and she provided a portable breath test sample that was over twice the legal limit. She was placed under arrest for drunk driving and transported to the police station where she admitted that she had three glasses of wine earlier. She also admitted that the marijuana pipe was hers. The woman refused to take the breath test and she was issued citations for DUI and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was released to a sober friend.
Wednesday, November 18
The wife of a 57-year-old Anacortes man discovered her husband was deceased on their sailboat moored a marina in the 3000 block of Oakes Avenue. The man had been doing repair work on the boat and his wife became concerned when he hadn’t returned home. The man was found inside the boat. The County Coroner responded and there was no evidence of foul play. An autopsy was planned.
The son of a 79-year-old Anacortes woman reported her as a missing person after she had left her apartment and had not been seen for a couple of days. The woman’s car was also gone from the apartment. A day after being reported missing, the woman and her car were located in Salem, Ore. by some good Samaritans who had stopped to check on her. A family member was contacted and was going to go to Oregon to pick her up.
A 14-year-old boy was contacted by police at the High School after a staff member found him in possession of suspected marijuana that had been stored inside a cigar tube. The boy admitted to an officer that the marijuana belonged to him. The boy was referred to Juvenile Court for the charge of being in possession of marijuana.
An officer driving in the area of 22nd Street and N Avenue passed by a parked car and saw a 45-year-old Anacortes man standing next to it urinating. The man told the officer he needed to use a restroom but “just couldn’t wait.” The man was issued a citation for public indecency.
Officers responded to a home in the 4000 block of W. 4th Street after receiving a call from a crisis line worker that a 31-year-old woman at the home was threatening suicide. Officers spoke with the woman who confirmed that she was planning on taking “a bunch of pills.” The woman said that she had not yet ingested any pills, but she admitted that she had been huffing from a can of compressed air. The woman was transported to the hospital by paramedics for evaluation and treatment.
Thursday, November 19
A woman reported that she had gotten fed up with her 32-year-old boyfriend’s drinking and gambling and told him to leave her apartment in the 800 block of 24th Street. The couple then argued about the man wanting to take the car without the woman’s permission. When the woman threatened to call the police, the man allegedly smashed her cell phone. The man then took the car but drove it back to the woman’s apartment while the police were there. The man admitted to breaking the phone because the woman had allegedly been hitting him. The man was arrested for domestic violence malicious mischief and driving with a suspended driver’s license. He was booked into jail.
Officers responded to a motel room in the 2000 block of Commercial Avenue regarding the report of some type of verbal altercation. Officers spoke with two men and a 27-year-old woman in the room who admitted that they had been arguing, but that no assault had occurred. The woman had an outstanding warrant out of Island County though for a previous driving offense and was placed under arrest. She was released to an Island County Deputy for transport to their jail.
A 48-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested at a motel in the 2000 block of Commercial Avenue for having four warrants for her arrest out of Anacortes and Skagit County courts. The warrants were for previous DUI and driving while suspended charges. She was booked into the county jail.
An Anacortes resident had her disabled person parking placard stolen from inside of her car. The vehicle had been parked in her driveway in the 2500 block of J Avenue. The Department of Licensing was notified and the placard was made “inactive.”
Four 36-inch solar powered light panels with their mounting brackets were stolen from a large development sign at the intersection of Sunset Avenue and Skyline Way. The cost of the lights and their installation was approximately $1,100.
