After receiving information on Wednesday that a student at the Middle School possibly was in possession of marijuana, school officials searched a 13-year-old boy and discovered a baggy that contained a bud of suspected marijuana. The boy’s mother and a police officer were summoned to the school. The boy claimed that another student had given him the marijuana. The boy was referred to Juvenile Court on charges of possession of marijuana.

Friday, October 16
A witness reported seeing the door to a car traveling on 29th Street fly open and a female driver punching a male passenger. The involved man, a 35-year-old Anacortes resident, then called 911 to report that his 38-year-old girlfriend had assaulted him. Officers were unable to locate the involved people but a second witness called and reported that the man had pulled the woman out of the car on M Avenue and had hit her several times. The witness then saw the empty car roll across the street and strike and damage a medical business sign. The man then got into the car and drove away. The man called 911 a second time and said he did not want to pursue the matter. An officer later located the involved car unoccupied and saw fresh damage to the passenger side. An officer later located the involved woman who said that she and her boyfriend had argued in the car but that no assault had taken place. The woman denied being pulled from the car or punched and said that she was not going to be a “rat” and get her boyfriend in trouble. The man was sent a court summons for domestic violence assault and hit and run.
A vacant home in the 400 block of 2nd Street was discovered to have a doorknob and a key lockbox torn off an exterior door. Both items were missing and it appeared someone had entered the house and rummaged through drawers and cabinets. Nothing appeared to be missing from inside of the house.
A 16-year-old Anacortes boy was uninjured after he lost control of the pickup he was driving on Heart Lake Road near Mount Erie and struck a stump and bounced over a log on the side of the roadway. The pickup was rounding a curve on the wet pavement when the boy lost control of the vehicle. Excessive speed played a factor in the accident and the boy was cited for driving too fast for the road conditions.
A woman reported getting into an argument with her ex-boyfriend about who was a better parent to their child in common at a home in the 1000 block of 20th Street. The woman said that the man’s wife then pushed her up against a wall and grabbed her by the neck. The woman had a visible scratch and hand print on her neck. The woman did not want to pursue charges against her ex’s wife and their relationship did not fit the domestic violence laws.
A Trek brand mountain bike valued at $1,200 was reported stolen from inside of a fenced yard in the 1400 block of 25th Street during nighttime hours. The bike had not been locked.
Saturday, October 17
A Tacoma man reported the theft of a 10 foot Mercury brand inflatable boat and outboard motor from where it had been secured to a dock on Cove Place. A security cable attaching the boat to the dock had been cut. The loss was estimated at $6,000.
Someone prowled a van parked in the 1200 block of 18th Street and stole a leather jacket, a cell phone, and a briefcase containing two blank money orders. The victim believed the van had been locked, but there was no sign of forced entry.
A 37-year-old Anacortes man riding a bicycle was uninjured after he struck a car that had turned across the bike lane he in which he was traveling in the 3300 block of H Avenue. The car had been traveling the opposite direction and had turned into a driveway in front of the bicycle. The 26-year-old driver of the car was cited for failure to yield the right of way.
Sunday, October 18
On officer observed two teenaged boys suspiciously looking into a car parked in the 1200 block of 24th Street. One of the boys then entered the unlocked car and removed something and the two boys walked away. The officer contacted the boys a couple of blocks away. One of the boys admitted to taking a small container containing a bingo dauber and two empty packs of cigarettes from the car. He was placed under arrest. A marijuana smoking pipe was located on him during a search incident to arrest. A small baggy of marijuana was found on the second boy. The boys were released to their parents and face charges of vehicle prowling, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Monday, October 19
Someone tried to break in to a construction trailer parked in the 2600 block of Highland Drive. An employee discovered that a metal hasp had been partially cut, but that entry into the trailer had not been made.
Fifteen commercial crab pots valued at $130 each were reported stolen from outside of a storage locker at a marina in the 1000 block of Q Avenue. The victim had left the pots out overnight and discovered them missing when he returned in the morning.
A Parks Department employee reported that a restroom at Whistle Lake had its wooden door damaged by apparently being shot by a shotgun. The interior walls also sustained some minor cosmetic damage. The damage estimate was not available at this writing.
An Apple laptop computer valued at $1,200 was reported stolen from an unlocked bedroom at a hostel in the 1000 block of 12th Street. Officers contacted a panhandler who had been seen inside of the building but he denied any knowledge of the theft. The man also allowed a search of his backpack, but the computer was not located.
Graffiti written with a felt tipped pen was written on a garage at a home in the 5300 block of Doon Way. The suspect is unknown and clean up cost was estimated at $10.
An iPhone valued at approximately $250 belonging to a student was stolen from a shop classroom at the high school. The victim had been operating machinery and had set the phone down under his jacket.
A 20-year-old man was arrested at a home in the 9100 block of Stevenson Road on an outstanding felony warrant for failing to report to jail for jail alternatives on a previous drug charge. He was booked into the county jail.
A $500 table saw and a $300 chainsaw were stolen from a home under construction in the 4100 block of Coral Root Place.
A 55-year-old Acme woman was arrested for domestic violence assault after she allegedly assaulted her 57-year-old boyfriend at his home in the 3500 block of M Avenue. An argument had ensued after the woman arrived at the house and the man reported that she had hit him numerous times. The man had a bloody scratch on his face. The woman admitted that she had hit the man after confronting him about e-mails he had sent that were “disrespectful.” The woman said that the man had hit her, but she had no marks to validate her claim. The woman was determined to be the primary aggressor and was booked into jail.
Tuesday, October 20
An officer stopped a car in the 3400 block of Oakes Avenue after a witness reported the driver was possibly intoxicated and seeing the car weaving on the road. The driver was identified as a 54-year-old Friday Harbor woman who smelled of intoxicants and had watery eyes. The woman failed field sobriety tests and said that she had two glasses of wine at lunch. When informed she was under arrest, the woman became belligerent and uncooperative. The woman locked her legs and refused to walk, but she was finally seated in the police car. The woman had an open bottle of vodka in her car and six other bottles of alcohol. The woman screamed profanities at the officer and called him a “Communist Nazi.” The woman was taken to the police station where she refused to speak with the exception of screaming profanities at officers. The woman made several racially derogatory comments to the officers as well. The woman continued to be uncooperative and used numerous stalling tactics during drunk driving processing. The woman refused to take a breath test and was booked into jail for DUI where she was uncooperative with the jail staff.
An officer observed two women arguing outside of a bar in the 300 block of Commercial Avenue. The officer then saw one woman push the other woman and then slam her into a brick wall. The officer stopped and separated the two women and learned that they were sisters. The woman who had been pushed said that her sister had gotten mad at her after she had tried to get her to stop drinking. The offending sister, a 51-year-old Anacortes woman, was arrested for domestic violence assault. The offending sister said that she had only been “trying to help” her sister. The officer told her that there were better methods than slamming someone into a wall. The offending sister was booked into jail.
Wednesday, October 21
A 28-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for domestic violence assault after he allegedly assaulted his 23-year-old brother at a home in the 2900 block of Q Avenue. The older brother was reportedly intoxicated and upset over girlfriend issues and took it out on his younger brother by pushing him and shoving him around. The older brother then fled the house but was located by police walking a few blocks away. He was booked into jail on the assault charge.
A pickup parked in a parking lot in the 800 block of 29th Street was broken into and the prowler tampered with the steering column. The vehicle owner discovered the lower steering column was broken with wires exposed. Nothing appeared to be missing from the vehicle. The owner also mentioned that gas had been siphoned out of the pickup numerous times in the past.
Thursday, October 22
A resident of the 2000 block of Down Jones Way reported the theft of 6 assorted gold and silver necklaces and chains from a jewelry box sometime in the past six months. The loss was estimated at over $1,000. The victim said there had been no forced entry into her home at any time. The matter is under further investigation.
A dog running off-leash in the community forest lands aggressively ran up to a woman who was walking two dogs on leashes. The two leashed dogs pulled the woman off balance and caused her to fall, possibly breaking her hand. The man walking the dog off leash refused to give his name to the woman as she wanted him admonished for not obeying the leash law. The man’s identity remains unknown.
A 29-year-old Anacortes man was taken into custody at Anacortes Municipal Court at the request of the judge for violating the terms of his release from past criminal violations. The man was transported to jail where he was scheduled to serve 180 days.
An officer stopped a pickup in the 700 block of Commercial Avenue for speeding. The driver was identified as a 35-year-old Colorado man who smelled of alcohol and initially handed the officer an instruction permit rather than his driver’s license. The driver also had slurred speech and slow clumsy movements. The driver told the officer he was headed towards his motel, but the officer advised him he was heading the wrong direction. The driver failed field sobriety tests and was arrested for drunk driving. He was taken to the police station where he provided breath samples that were almost three times the legal limit. He was issued a citation for DUI and released to a sober adult.
Friday, October 23
A 30-year-old Anacortes woman reported that an unknown man who had been harassing her at a bar in the 300 block of Commercial Avenue followed her and two friends out of the bar to her friend’s car. The man continued to harass her and tried to pick a fight with one of the friends. The woman told the man to go away and he allegedly responded by punching her in the face. The woman said that she was not seriously hurt and declined medical attention. Officers spoke with several people in the area, but no one had ever seen the man before and his identity is unknown.
An employee of a medical facility in the 1200 block of 24th Street discovered that the side of his car had been keyed while parked in the parking lot while he had been at work. The scratch ran the length of the passenger side of the car. The victim had not yet provided a damage estimate to police.
