On Sunday, Sept. 15, an officer stopped a pickup driven by a 20-year-old Hope Island woman on M Avenue after counting 11 people riding in the vehicle, including 8 people in the truck bed sitting on top of and clinging to each other. The officer was concerned for the safety of the passengers. The driver’s license was strategically torn to partially obscure her date of birth. The officer had seen the woman inside of a downtown bar earlier, but confirmed she was only 20 when he stopped her vehicle. The woman claimed she had only been at the bar to pick up her friends, but she smelled of alcohol and provided a portable breath sample that confirmed she had been drinking. She was placed under arrest for drunk driving. She later admitted that she had been drinking. She provided breath samples that were over the limit for a minor driving and was cited for Minor DUI. She was released to a sober friend.

Friday, September 25
A woman living in the 4400 block of San Juan Avenue reported her laptop computer valued at $1,000 was stolen from her residence. The woman said that she had checked with her three roommates who all denied any knowledge of the theft.
A resident of the 1200 block of 9th Street reported a hit and run to his pickup that was parked in a vacant lot behind his home. The pickup sustained dents and scrapes with damage estimated at $1,500. There was white paint transfer on the pickup, but the suspect vehicle remains unknown.
Saturday, September 26
An officer stopped a pickup on 12th Street for having a defective brake light. The driver was identified as a 51-year-old Anacortes man who smelled of intoxicants, had bloodshot eyes, and slurred speech. The man admitted that he had “six beers” since the afternoon and he failed field sobriety tests. He was placed under arrest for drunk driving and having a suspended driver’s license. He was taken to the police station where he also said that he had been taking muscle relaxing pills in addition to drinking the beer. He provided breath samples that were nearly twice the legal limit. The man was issued a citation for DUI and driving while suspended and released to a sober friend.
An officer contacted a vehicle in the drive-through line at a restaurant in the 1300 block of Commercial Avenue after it had been reported the driver was possibly intoxicated. The driver had been seen stumbling in the downtown area a short time earlier and then declined offer for a ride. The driver was identified as a 39-year-old woman who smelled of alcohol and displayed other effects of drinking. When asked if she thought she had too much to drink to drive, the woman answered “yes.” The woman performed poorly on field sobriety tests including almost twice falling off her feet. She was arrested for drunk driving and taken to the police station. The woman provided breath samples that were significantly over twice the legal limit. She was cited for DUI and released to a sober friend.
Officers responded to the campground at Washington Park regarding the report of a man arguing with two women and threatening to “kill” them. An officer located the man walking in the campground and he was extremely intoxicated. The 51-year-old man denied making any threats to anyone and said that he had been arguing with his wife because he thought she had been unfaithful. The wife and a female friend of the couple were contacted at the campsite. The wife said that her husband was “just drunk” and had been ranting. She said that her husband had not made any threats to hurt anyone and that she thought he just needed to leave for awhile until, he sobered up. The friend was also intoxicated and she said that the man had been making some threats but that he had never touched either one of them. She also said that the man just needed to leave until he was sober. The man was given a courtesy ride to a relative’s house for a cooling off/sobering up period.
A 20-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested while walking on 12th Street after it was confirmed she had a felony warrant for her arrest for a violation of a court order. She was booked into the county jail.
An officer observed a 51-year-old Anacortes man making obscene gestures and yelling profanities at passing cars in the 900 block of O Avenue in front of several people. When the officer stopped to check on the man, the man made an obscene gesture at the officer and swore at him. The man was placed under arrest for disorderly conduct and transported to the police station. The man calmed down and admitted being intoxicated probably led to his behavior. He was issued a citation and released.
An officer stopped a pickup on 11th Street after seeing the vehicle burn rubber with its tires and fail to stop at a stop sign. The driver was identified as a 29-year-old Anacortes man who smelled strongly of intoxicants. The man’s movements were extremely clumsy, including tearing his vehicle registration in half as he pulled it out of the ashtray. He admitted that he had “a couple of beers” and that he shouldn’t have been “burning off” his tires. The man failed field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest. The man provided breath samples that were nearly twice the legal limit and he admitted that he had too much to drink and shouldn’t have been driving. He was cited for DUI and released to his wife.
Sunday, September 27
An officer stopped a car driven by a 29-year-old Eastsound woman in the 1100 block of 12th Street after he saw the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. The vehicle also made an illegal turn. The woman had slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, smelled of alcohol, and admitted she had “a few.” She failed field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for drunk driving. The woman declined to take a breath test but it was discovered that she had four prior alcohol related driving offenses and the officer was granted a search warrant for her blood. The woman was taken to the hospital where samples of her blood were drawn. She admitted she had a serious drinking problem and had been arrested several times in the past for DUI. She was booked into jail on investigation of felony DUI charges based upon the previous offenses.
A 40-year-old Mount Vernon woman was arrested for drunk driving after an officer stopped the car she was driving for weaving over the centerline on O Avenue. The officer had to repeatedly tell the woman to stop after her car kept rolling backwards towards the police car. When asked for her registration, the woman handed the officer her birth certificate and then a large stack of papers. She smelled strongly of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes, and displayed other classic signs of intoxication. The woman failed field sobriety tests and was arrested for drunk driving. She admitted she had three beers but she refused to submit to a breath test. She was issued a citation for DUI and released to a sober friend.
A 21 speed Hard Rock mountain bike was stolen from outside of the owner’s apartment in the 800 block of 29th Street. The bike was valued at $800.
Police are seeking contact with a 31-year-old Anacortes man who was suspected of violating a no-contact order with his ex-girlfriend. The man allegedly grabbed the woman, shook her, and then pushed her away at a home in the 4600 block of Anaco Beach Road after he became upset that the woman was with her new boyfriend. The man had reportedly been fighting with the new boyfriend when the woman stepped in to break up the fight and was grabbed and pushed.
An officer spoke with a 34-year-old Mount Vernon woman after it was initially reported that the woman had been beaten up by her husband who was allegedly a member of an outlaw motorcycle club. The woman had a cut below her that was also visibly bruised. The woman told an officer that she had gotten drunk and then fell face down onto the sidewalk in front of a club in the 900 block of 7th Street during the Oyster Run. The woman adamantly denied that her husband had hit her and again said that she had just fallen. The woman said that she was mad at her husband because he had taken her motorcycle “club” patch away from her. The woman was treated at the emergency room for the cut.
A car parked in the 1100 block of 6th Street was prowled and two digital cameras and approximately $70 in change was stolen from inside. The cameras were valued at $600 and $169 respectively. The victim believed the car had been locked, but there was no sign of forced entry.
Monday, September 28
A 60-year-old Glacier Washington woman claimed that she had two half-full bottles of prescription pain medication stolen from inside of her purse while she had been at a bar in the 400 block of Commercial Avenue. The woman said that she had left her purse on a chair while she went to the restroom. Nothing else was taken from her purse. There are no suspects at this time.
An Anacortes man reported the theft of a surveyor’s laser transit from his pickup parked at a home in the 1600 block of 11th Street. The victim discovered that a flashlight, a pack of cigarettes, and the driver’s license of a man from South Carolina had been left behind at the scene. The theft is under further investigation.
An Anacortes woman reported that her dog had been jumped on and bitten by another dog as both animals arrived inside of the off-leash dog park on H Avenue. The woman’s friend was able to break up the dogs, but he suffered a large scratch to his leg. The woman confronted the other dog owner who told the woman that was “what dogs do at the dog park.” The Animal Control Officer spoke with the other dog owner and warned him to get his dog licensed or be cited. As the incident occurred inside of the off leash park and dogs and owners enter at their own risk, no criminal action will be sought against the offending dog owner.
An approximate eight foot fiberglass row boat was reported abandoned on the shoreline at the east end of 5th Street. Police were attempting to identify its owner.
A car owned by a Bow woman had a window pried open while it was parked at Whistle Lake. The unknown thief then unlocked the car and stole some women’s clothing, a towel, and dog shampoo. The loss was estimated at $100.
A double-pane window at a home in the 1300 block of 41st Street was broken by being struck with a steal roller bearing. It was believed that the object was probably launched with a slingshot or “wrist rocket.”
Tuesday, September 29
A 90-year-old Sedro-Woolley man reported to the police that he had driven his van into a large rock at the top of the Cap Sante viewpoint. The man said that as he was easing his vehicle to a stop at the large rocks that ring the viewpoint, he accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake. Neither the man nor his 85-year-old wife who was a passenger was injured. The vehicle sustained minor damage and the rock remained unmoved.
A 24-year-old Anacortes woman was contacted at the emergency room after a relative reported the woman had been beaten up by her ex-boyfriend the previous night. The woman said that she and her ex had gotten into an argument at her home in the 800 block of 29th Street about him refusing to quiet down so she could go to bed. The woman reported that her ex had grabbed her by the neck, but that she broke away and ran up the stairs. The woman said that the man caught up with her and hit her repeatedly in the back of the head. The officer then contacted the ex-boyfriend, a 26-year-old Anacortes man. The man confirmed that he had argued with the woman, but he said that she had kicked him in the groin. The man said that he had simply “held her down” until she calmed down and then he left. The officer returned to the hospital to speak with the woman again, but discovered she had left before being fully examined. Based upon the statements, the man was issued a court summons for domestic violence assault.
Wednesday, September 30
A 47-year-old Anacortes woman was contacted at her home after her husband reported that she was possibly suicidal. The woman was initially very agitated and said that she was not planning on hurting herself. It was learned that she had not been taking her prescribed medication and that another person had heard her make suicidal statements. An officer was able to calm the woman and persuade her to go to the hospital for evaluation.
An Anacortes man reported that he had been taking photographs at a Port pier and he inadvertently forgot his digital camera and tripod. When he returned his $400 camera was gone, but the tripod was still there. There are no suspects.
Thursday, October 1
A vacuum cleaner belonging to a business in the 1100 block of 8th Street was stolen of the back porch of the business. The vacuum cleaner had been left out over night. The item was valued at $200.
Employees of the liquor store in the 1000 block of Commercial Avenue reported that a man had left the store without paying for a $35 bottle of cognac. An officer contacted the 54-year-old man walking a few blocks away. The man claimed initially that he had bought the bottle of liquor, but that he had thrown away his receipt. The man then admitted he had stolen the liquor and it was located in his backpack. The man was arrested for theft. During a search of the man the officer located a glass smoking pipe that the man claimed belonged to his cousin and was used for smoking “crack.” The man was issued a citation for theft and possession of drug paraphernalia and released.
An officer saw a car traveling at night on Commercial Avenue with no headlights on and an orange traffic cone dragging underneath the car. The officer then saw a nearby construction site with traffic cones strewn about. The officer stopped the car and identified the driver as a 40-year-old Eastsound woman who smelled of alcohol and had bloodshot eyes and sluggish movements. The woman said that she had hit the cones on purpose for “fun.” The woman admitted that she had “two beers” and some wine earlier. She agreed to perform field sobriety tests on which she performed poorly. She was placed under arrest for drunk driving and provided breath samples that were significantly over the legal limit. She was cited for DUI and released to a sober friend.
