Friday, September 18

A 33-year-old Anacortes man was arrested in the 3000 block of D Avenue after an officer recognized the man driving a car and was aware he had a felony warrant for a previous violation of a court order.  The man was booked into jail on the warrant and also issued a citation for not having a valid driver’s license.   

Four vehicles parked at Whistle Lake were prowled during the early evening hours on 09-18-09.  Three of the vehicles had side windows smashed out to gain entry and the fourth vehicle had possibly been “slim-jimmed.”  The victims were residents of Anacortes, Oak Harbor, and Sedro-Woolley.  Items stolen from the various vehicles included purses, wallets, checkbooks, credit cards, identification, a cell phone, an I-Pod, and assorted clothing. 

An officer saw a 37-year-old Anacortes woman who he knew had a confirmed warrant for her arrest enter a motel room in the 2900 block of Commercial Avenue.  The warrant was for previous charges of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.  The officer contacted the woman and placed her under arrest.  The woman was taken to the police station where she was issued a new court date and released as the jail would not accept her for booking due to overcrowding.

A 27-year-old Oak Harbor man suffered a broken nose after allegedly being head butted and punched in the face by a 29-year-old Anacortes man inside of a bar in the 300 block of Commercial Avenue.  The victim reported that he had just walked into the bar with 2 friends when an unknown man accused him of spitting on another bar patron.  The victim said that while he and his friends were talking to the man, the suspect approached from behind and made a racially derogatory comment.  The victim said that he told the suspect that he didn’t know what he was talking about and that his language wasn’t necessary when the suspect head butted him in the nose.  The suspect allegedly punched the victim twice more as he fell to the ground.  The suspect then fled on foot.  As the friends helped the victim from the bar, an unknown man punched one of the friends.  Witnesses identified the first suspect and officers looked for the man without success.  The suspect faces possible assault charges. 

Saturday, September 19

Police responded to the report of another fight just after midnight at the same bar in the 300 block of Commercial Avenue where one man had a bloody face and another man had fled on foot.  An officer then spotted a 23-year-old Anacortes man in the 1200 block of 5th Street and chased him on foot for a few blocks until the man dove to the ground and gave up.  The man was placed under arrest and he admitted he had gotten into a fight with another man after the man had “razzed” him about not skateboarding anymore.  The man said that he had gained the upper hand in the fight and punched the other man in the face a few times.  The other man told police that he had been involved in a mutual fight with the first man but that he did not want to pursue charges.  Both men received citations for disorderly conduct for intentionally fighting with each other. 

Officers contacted a couple who had been married for approximately three months at their home in the 1100 block of 8th Street after the couple had argued about the woman erasing another woman’s phone number from her husband’s phone.  The couple had both been drinking and it was determined that no assault had occurred.  The woman was given a courtesy ride to a friend’s house for a cooling off period.   

A Toyota 4-Runner owned by a couple from Seattle had its window smashed out while it was parked at Whistle Lake.  The couple returned from hiking and discovered that they were missing a backpack that contained clothing and various prescription medications.  The loss was estimated at $500. 

A pickup parked in the 1200 block of 20th Street had a derogatory word scratched into its paint.  The victim believed her ex-husband was possibly responsible as he had allegedly called her the same word in front of their children earlier.  The woman later reported that another vehicle belonging to her had been keyed across the entire length of the passenger side.  An officer spoke with the ex-husband who denied any knowledge of the vandalism. 

A 21-year-old Kirkland man was cited for disorderly conduct after he allegedly yelled at a group of people seated in a car in the 1000 block of 4th Street, spit on the car, and then punched a man who exited the car in the head.  The suspect was intoxicated and he tried to walk away from police, but he was handcuffed without incident.  The suspect admitted to spitting on the car and punching the other man.  The victim did not want to pursue assault charges due to the suspect being drunk.  The suspect was released after signing his citation. 

Sunday, September 20

A 26-year-old Anacortes man was issued a citation for false reporting after he called 911 and reported a fight outside of a bar in the 300 block of Commercial Avenue.  An officer was on scene at the time and did not see anyone fighting, nor did the bar staff or anyone else in the area that officers spoke with.  The man changed the details of his story and could not describe anyone involved in the alleged fight.   

An officer stopped a car driven by a 22-year-old Anacortes woman for speeding on Oakes Avenue.  The woman smelled strongly of intoxicants and had watery eyes and a flushed face.  She claimed that she had one drink a few hours earlier.  She failed field sobriety tests and was arrested for drunk driving.  The officer found a half full 1.5 liter bottle of wine inside of the woman’s car.  The woman was taken to the police station and processed where she gave breath samples that were nearly twice the legal limit.  The woman also admitted to drinking an unknown amount of wine straight from the bottle as she drove from Seattle.  She was issued a citation for DUI and released to a sober friend. 

Officers responded to the 1200 block of 29th Street after a witness reported that a young woman was in the street crying and yelling.  Officers located the woman on the front porch of a house and recognized her as a 20-year-old Anacortes woman.  The woman was unsteady on her feet, had slurred speech, and appeared to be intoxicated.  The woman admitted to drinking “a beer,” but gave a portable breath test of over twice the legal limit if she had been driving.  The woman was placed under arrest and cited for underage drinking.  She was then released at the scene.                  

A 42-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested for having a felony warrant for failing to report to jail on a drug charge and two misdemeanor warrants for suspended driving.  The woman was taken into custody at a home in the 2600 block of R Avenue and booked into the county jail. 

Officers contacted a 42-year-old woman at her home in the 1100 block of 27th Court after her boyfriend reported that she had been drinking, throwing things around the home, and was possibly suicidal.  The boyfriend said that the woman was upset because she could not get pain medication for a back problem.  The woman appeared to be intoxicated and she told an officer that she had been thinking about cutting her wrists.  The woman had scars on her wrists from previous cuts.  The woman was not cooperative in going to the hospital for evaluation and she screamed obscenities at the officers.  The woman was finally talked into a police car and taken to the emergency room where she was belligerent with the staff and attempted to bite an officer.  The woman was then held on an involuntary mental evaluation.        

Officers responded to the report of an attempted suicide at a home in the 1400 block of K Avenue.  They discovered a 46-year-old man had cut his wrist with a razor and was lying on the floor.  The man appeared to be highly intoxicated and his girlfriend said he was distraught over the pending breakup of their relationship.  The man was transported to the emergency room for treatment and evaluation.  

Monday, September 21

A 15-year-old Anacortes boy was referred to juvenile court for possession of marijuana charges after high school officials found a baggie of marijuana in his backpack.  The boy had skipped a class and left campus and was contacted by school officials when he returned.  The boy declined to make any statement to the police officer and was released to his parents. 

Tuesday, September 22

A 59-year-old Anacortes woman was bitten in the hand by a dog while walking on the Tommy Thompson Trail.  The dog was on a leash being walked by its owner as it passed the woman.  The dog owner said that the animal had never bitten anyone before and that it was current on its vaccinations.  The dog owner was required to quarantine the dog at home for 10 days and the incident is being followed up on by the Animal Control officer. 

A Lynwood woman reported that her station wagon had been prowled while it had been parked at Whistle Lake the previous weekend.  The woman said the car had been locked, but there was no sign of forced entry.  Stolen from the car were a backpack, women’s clothing, men’s clothing, Sonic tooth brushes, and assorted electric grooming devices.  The loss was estimated at almost $3,000.    

A 16-year-old boy was arrested at his home in the 4700 block of Devonshire Drive after he argued and struggled with his father about the boy refusing to go to family counseling.  The father tried to get the boy to leave the house, but the boy resisted.  The boy allegedly broke a shoe rack near the front door into pieces and knocked a whiteboard off a wall.  The boy was arrested for domestic violence malicious mischief and booked into juvenile detention. 

An officer stopped a pickup after seeing the front passenger not wearing a seatbelt and hanging outside of the window, and the vehicle not signaling or making complete stops at stop signs. The vehicle had also been traveling very fast down a gravel driveway.  The driver was identified as a 32-year-old Anacortes man and the passenger as a 25-year-old Anacortes man. The driver smelled strongly of alcohol, had slurred speech, and bloodshot eyes. He failed field sobriety tests and was arrested for drunk driving. A half full bottle of vodka was found it the pickup. The passenger was verbally belligerent, got out of the pickup and vomited, rolled around on some nearby grass, and then attempted to “swim” across the pavement.  As the passenger appeared to be possibly be under the influence of something more than alcohol, paramedics arrived and transported him to the emergency room.  The driver was processed for DUI and provided breath samples that were almost twice the legal limit.  He also admitted to drinking from the vodka bottle.  He was cited for DUI and released to a sober relative.

A 31-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for domestic violence assault after he allegedly got into a fight and repeatedly punched a former roommate at a home in the 1000 block of 20th Street.  The victim, a 22-year-old Anacortes man, had reportedly made a rude comment about the suspect’s girlfriend and a pushing match ensued.  The suspect said that the victim took a swing at him and missed, but that he punched the victim in the nose.  The victim then allegedly got the suspect in a head lock but the suspect did not stop fighting until the victim’s girlfriend hit the suspect with a weight from a weight set.  The victim had a bloody nose, a cut lip, and a contusion to his head.  The suspect was determined to be the primary aggressor and was booked into jail.     

Wednesday, September 23

A Cap Sante High School student reported the theft of an iPod valued at $150 from her desktop.  The student had walked to another building temporarily, and when she retuned the item was gone.  The matter is under further investigation. 

A woman reported that her former boyfriend had come to her home in the 1300 block of 11th Street and yelled at her.  The man then allegedly kicked her front door before leaving.  There was no damage to the door and the woman was informed how to obtain a restraining order.  

A 33-year-old Oak Harbor man was arrested in a parking lot in the 1100 block of 27th Court at the request of the Oak Harbor Police Department.  The man was a suspect in a felony assault that occurred in Oak Harbor.  The man was transported to Deception Pass where he was turned over to Oak Harbor Police. 

Thursday, September 24

The resident of an apartment in the 1100 block of 24th Street reported that someone had cut the fabric to her screen door during the night.  The woman said that she had not heard anything unusual during the night. 

A Specialized mountain bike that had been left unsecured was stolen form in front of the high school.  

A 21-year-old Mount Vernon man was arrested and issued a citation for driving with a suspended driver’s license after being stopped by an officer on SR 20.  The man said that he knew his license was suspended because he had previous traffic tickets that he hadn’t paid.  The officer gave the man a courtesy ride to his work place. 

A 78-year-old Anacortes woman reported that she had lost her diamond wedding ring, diamond engagement ring, and an anniversary band that had all been soldered together while making numerous stops in Anacortes.  The woman said that the wedding band was “priceless” to her as she had had it for over 57 years.

A window was broken out of a Jeep parked at Whistle Lake and a woman’s purse stolen from inside.  The purse contained keys, identification, a debit card, $50 in cash, a digital camera valued at $200 and a GPS unit valued at $300.   

An officer saw two men carrying a large banner at night near 6th Street and Commercial Avenue.  When the men saw the officer, they dropped the banner and ran.  The officer was able to catch one man who was identified as an 18-year-old Anacortes resident.  The man claimed his friend had bought the sign during Shipwreck Day.  The banner was for the movie “Angels and Demons” and was approximately 7 feet x 11 feet in size.  The man smelled of alcohol and provided a breath test that confirmed he had been drinking.  He said that he had been drinking vodka at his friend’s house.  He was arrested and issued a citation for underage drinking.  Police also spoke with the friend, a 23-year-old Anacortes man, who was found walking in the area.  The friend initially said that he did not know anything about the banner, but then said that he bought it at Shipwreck Day.  He then changed his story to say he bought it at the Arts Festival and then from the cinema.  Officers retained the banner and are working on determining whether it was purchased or stolen.
