Friday, August 21

A Ford Explorer parked in the 1300 block of O Avenue had a passenger door window broken out and a few dollars in loose change stolen from inside.  

A 56-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for drunk driving after an officer stopped the man’s vehicle for traveling straight in a right turn only lane at the intersection of 12th Street and O Avenue.  The driver smelled of intoxicants, had watery eyes and a flushed face, and said that he had drunk three beers.  The man performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest.  A half full cup of beer was found in the man’s car.  The man was processed for drunk driving at which time he said he had “four or five” beers and he provided breath samples that were significantly over the legal limit.  He was cited for DUI and released to a sober adult. 

Saturday, August 22

A witness observed a gold Cadillac drive quickly into a parking lot at a bar near Sharpes Corner.  The Cadillac then backed into a parking space and struck another car that was already parked.  When the driver of the Cadillac was contacted by the witness and learned that the witness had called the police, the driver fled on foot.  The driver, identified as a 32-year-old Mount Vernon man, was located by the police hiding in some nearby bushes.  The driver was informed he was under arrest for hit and run, and he allegedly commented, “You got me, I’m drunk.”  The driver did smell strongly of alcohol and exited other classic signs of intoxication.  He was transported to the police station where he refused a breath test.  He was booked into jail on hit and run and DUI charges. 

A 20-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested while she was walking in the 900 block of 29th Street after it was confirmed she had a felony warrant for her arrest for previous trafficking in stolen property and possession of controlled substance charges.  She was booked into jail. 

A two-year-old Everett boy suffered bite wounds to his eyelid, cheek, and mouth as the result of being bit in the face by a Pit Bull at Washington Park.  The dog had been on a leash controlled by its owner from Seattle.  The boy reportedly toddled up in front of the dog and raised his hand which apparently startled the dog and caused him to bite the boy.  The dog was quarantined at the pound since the owner could not provide proof of the dog’s vaccination information.  The Animal Control Officer will be following up on the incident.      

A 39-year-old Anacortes man was cited for negligent driving after he allegedly failed to stop for a stop sign on 34th Street and collided with a vehicle that was traveling on R Avenue.  The man admitted he had drunk a beer about an hour prior to the accident.  Emergency responders also smelled marijuana on the man, but he claimed he had last smoked the previous night.  The man was transported to the hospital for leg and back pain.  The other driver, an 82-year-old Anacortes man, did not sustain any serious injuries.    

Sunday, August 23

A 22-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for drunk driving after an officer stopped the pickup he was driving for failing to stop for a stop sign at 12th Street and O Avenue.  The officer stopped the pickup in the 1200 block of L Avenue and smelled intoxicants on the driver.  The driver said that he had a couple of drinks at a downtown bar.  He performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was arrested.  The driver was processed for DUI and he provided breath samples over the legal limit.  He was cited for DUI and released to a sober friend. 

Someone smashed out the window of a Dodge Durango parked at Whistle Lake and stole the wallet of a LaConner teen from inside.  The wallet contained the teens ID, a debit card, and approximately $50.00 in cash. 

An officer stopped a car driven by a 29-year-old transient male for speeding on Sunset Avenue.  The man had a suspended driver’s license and three warrants for his arrest, including a felony warrant for escape from community custody.  The man was issued a citation for suspended driving and booked into jail on the warrants. 

The same 32-year-old Mount Vernon man arrested the previous day was arrested by a Swinomish Tribal Police Officer on Aqua Lane after the man fled the scene of a traffic stop at Sharpes Corner, the scene of the previous arrest.  The Tribal Officer had stopped the man’s car after it lost control making a turn.  The driver told the officer he hadn’t done anything wrong and drove away with the Tribal Officer in pursuit.  The man drove to a residence in the 7100 block of Aqua Lane where he was arrested after a brief struggle.  Since the man showed the effects of drinking alcohol, an Anacortes Officer processed him for DUI.  The man refused a breath test but admitted he had drunk several beers.  The man was booked into jail on eluding and DUI charges.    

Officers contacted a man and woman from Oklahoma at a campsite at Washington Park after it had been reported the man had been throwing things at the woman.  Officers spoke with both people and learned that an argument had started during the preparation of a meal and the drinking of some beer.  It was determined that no assault or crime had occurred and the man went into a second tent for a cooling off period. 

A 17-year-old girl was arrested at her home in the 2300 block of 15th Street after she allegedly punched and bit her father and kicked at her mother.  The girl had reportedly grabbed some car keys and ran for the door at which time her father grabbed her by the arm and told her that she wasn’t leaving.  The girl then allegedly assaulted her parents.  The girl was booked into juvenile detention on domestic violence assault charges. 

Monday, August 24

An Anacortes man was advised to contact his credit card company after he had been informed that there had been “unusual” activity on the card in the previous few days.  The man reported that there had been several hundred dollars of unauthorized charges on the card.  The victim is gathering more information about the charges and the investigation is ongoing.

A pickup driven by an Anacortes girl damaged the exterior wall of a restaurant in the 500 block of Commercial Avenue when her vehicle jumped the parking curb and struck the wall.  The driver said that she had been trying to back out of a parking space, but had put the vehicle in drive instead of reverse and pushed on the gas instead of the brake.  The driver was not injured but her vehicle sustained approximately $1,000 in damage.  The driver was cited for negligent driving. 

Officers responded to an apartment in the 1100 block of 34th Street after a witness reported hearing a man yelling and a woman screaming.  Officers contacted a woman and her three children who all seemed surprised.  No man was present and it was discovered that the yelling was coming from a television show being played loudly. 

An American flag and a papal flag that had been flying in front of a church on Saint Mary’s Drive were reported stolen.  The flags were valued at $162 and thief is unknown at this time. 

A planet earth flag, two flags with peace symbols on them, and 100 feet of cotton line were stolen from in front of a church in the 2800 block of Commercial Avenue.  The loss was estimated at approximately $65. 

Tuesday, August 25

An 18-year-old Anacortes man was booked into jail on domestic violence malicious mischief charges after he allegedly rammed and smashed a windshield on his girlfriend’s car at a residence in the 1700 block of 12th Street.  The girlfriend’s sister also reported that the man had gotten mad and hit her car door with his hand causing a small dent.  The second incident reportedly occurred at a home on Havekost Road. The man admitted to smashing out the car window during an argument with his girlfriend, but he said that car belonged to him.  He also said that he had only punched the sister’s car door because the sister had pulled forward and struck him with the car door. 

A 52-year-old Anacortes woman reported that she had been struck by a car while riding her bicycle across Commercial Avenue at 13th Street a few days prior.  The woman reported that the driver of the car had stopped and asked if she was okay and that she had told the driver she was fine and that she went home.  The woman said that she later noticed her elbow was hurting and that she went to the doctor and learned her elbow was broken.  The woman said that she had waited so long to contact the police because she initially believed that she wasn’t hurt.  The woman was unable to provide any vehicle or driver information about the car that allegedly hit her. 

A man who had been parked at a medical facility in the 1200 block of 24th Street returned to his car and discovered his handicap parking placard had been stolen.  The man had left his car unlocked. 

A 22-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for domestic violence assault after he allegedly slapped and pushed his girlfriend after she tried to intervene in a physical a fight the boyfriend was having with another man at their apartment in the 500 block of 6th Street.  The boyfriend claimed that he had only pushed his girlfriend back to keep her from getting hit while he fought with the other man.  Other witnesses said that the boyfriend had slapped his girlfriend and called her a derogatory name when she tried to intervene in the fight.  The boyfriend was booked into jail.      

Wednesday, August 26

A woman living in the 1700 block of 11th Street reported a string of small thefts from her home.  Missing items included approximately $15 in bills and loose change and miscellaneous food items.  The woman said that she had confronted a 23-year-old transient who had been staying with her and that he had admitted to taking the items.  The woman did not know the man’s full name or his current whereabouts, but told police she wanted to be reimbursed for the stolen items.  Police contact with the man is pending.

A 16-year-old East Sound girl was arrested at a home in the 1800 block of 11th Street at the request of the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office as she had a felony warrant for previous theft and drug charges.  The girl was booked into juvenile detention.

Thursday, August 27

An officer responding to an alarm at an elementary school in the 1200 block of M Avenue found a portable classroom door ajar and discovered an 18-year-old Burlington man and a 17-year-old Anacortes boy hiding behind a desk.  A television and an electric keyboard had been moved to the center of the room and it appeared that the suspects were collecting items to steal.  The 18-year-old smelled of alcohol and admitted to drinking earlier.  He also claimed that he and his friend had just been walking by and saw the door open and decided to “check it out.”  The man was booked into jail for investigation of burglary, and the 17-year-old was released to his father and also faces burglary charges.

An officer on bicycle patrol contacted a 42-year-old transient who was preparing to camp in a tent near Rotary Park.  The man appeared to be intoxicated and was in possession of a freshly spray painted mountain bike.  The man told the officer he was just passing through town.  A records check showed the man had a felony warrant for his arrest out of Island County for a previous theft charge.  The man was placed under arrest and turned over to an Island County Sheriff’s Deputy.
