A 35-year-old Anacortes woman was allegedly punched in the face by an unknown man during an altercation while she had been drinking with two friends at a downtown bar.  The woman then went home, but her two male friends returned downtown.  One of the friends, a 33-year-old Selah resident, then reported that he was sitting in his car with the other friend when he was punched in the head through an open window.  The other friend then allegedly took the unknown assailant to the ground and only agreed to let him up if the assailant agreed to leave.  The assailant then left.  Officers were unable to locate or identify the assailant.  

Officers tried to speak with a 26-year-old-year-old Anacortes man outside of a downtown bar due to him being involved in a heated argument with another man, but the man ran off when officer approached.  He was located a short time later in the 500 block of O Avenue and taken into custody.  He was booked into jail as he had two outstanding warrants for his arrest for failing to appear in court.  

A woman who parked her car in the 1300 block of 14th Street checked the car in the morning and discovered it had been scraped.  A note was left on the car with a phone number, but when the victim called all she received was voice mail.  The victim said that she was just reporting the incident for insurance purposes.  

Sunday, July 12

A couple living in the 2700 block of R Avenue reported that someone had entered their home during the night and stole a wallet from inside of a purse.  The purse had been in the couple’s bedroom and it was believed that the unknown suspect had entered their room while the couple was sleeping.  Missing was over $1000 in cash and checks.  The couple also found the door to an outside shed open, but nothing appeared to be missing.  

A woman living in the 900 block of 25th Street discovered that someone had removed screens from 3 of her windows and moved a bench under one of the windows apparently in an effort to gain entry into her apartment.  The woman believed that her dog probably frightened off the burglar before entry was made.  Officers spoke with the woman’s neighbor and learned that someone had entered his apartment through an unlocked door while he was away.  The man was missing an iPod and a portable DVD player.  The estimated loss was approximately $500.  

A woman returned to her home in the 1500 block of 9th Street and discovered that her house had been rifled through.  The woman checked her home and discovered that she was missing two empty purses and a container of makeup.  Entry into the home was believed to have been through an unlocked window.    

An 18-year-old Anacortes woman who had been residing at a half-way house in Everett returned to her grandmother’s home in the 700 block of Q Avenue where she allegedly threatened her grandmother with a knife.  The woman reportedly grabbed a kitchen knife and threatened to stab and “kill” her grandmother.  The woman was located behind the home and she admitted to having made death threats towards her grandmother, but claimed that the knife had been on the floor at the time.  It was further learned that there was an existing domestic violence protection order barring the woman from contacting her grandmother.  The woman was booked into jail on assault and felony violation of no-contact order charges.     

Monday, July 13

Officers responded to the report of a possible overdose at a home on 32nd Street.  A 16-year-old girl had reported that she had taken several sleeping pills and was feeling dizzy.  The girl did not provide any specific reason why she had taken the pills, but she admitted to officers that she had intended to harm herself.  The girl was transported by paramedics to the hospital for treatment.         

A man residing in an apartment in the 2600 block of Q Avenue was awakened when he heard scratching on his bedroom window.  The man looked outside and saw an unknown male using a knife to cut a hole into the window screen.  The man grabbed for the unknown suspect, but the suspect fled on foot.  The man waited to call the police and the only description he could provide of the suspect was a male wearing a dark colored stocking cap.  Police were unable to locate anyone matching that description.  

A passer-by reported that a woman and her 15-year-old son were arguing in front of a house in the 4000 block of H Avenue.  It was learned the teen was emotionally upset, but that no crime had occurred.  

A 25-year-old Anacortes man was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia in the 1900 block of O Avenue after an officer located a glass pipe in the man’s pocket that he admitted he used for smoking illegal drugs.  Police had contacted the man after a witness reported that he had been possibly involved in a drug deal with some other men at the scene.  All of the men denied that any kind of drug deal had taken place.  The man signed his citation and was released.  

A 19-year-old Anacortes man was arrested in the 1300 block of 22nd Street after it was learned that he had three misdemeanor warrants for his arrest.  As the jail would not accept the man for booking due to overcrowding, the man was released after being given new court dates.  

A 12-year-old boy who was visiting a friend at a home in the 700 block of Q Avenue allegedly stole a hand-held video game player from his friend.  The boy was located by a relative of the victim and he turned over the video game player.  The boy claimed he had planned on returning the item to his friend.  The boy told an officer that he “didn’t realize” that he had taken the item.  The victim’s family did not want to pursue criminal charges.

Tuesday, July 14

Employees of a grocery in the 900 block of 11th Street reported that they had caught an 84-year-old Anacortes man shoplifting a package of deli meat and that the man had been trespassed from the store for a year.  The man drove off prior to police arrival.  The man had allegedly shoplifted from the store numerous times in the past and had been trespassed on other occasions.  The employees told police that they did not want to pursue theft charges due to the man’s age but that they wanted the police to be aware that he was not welcome in the store.   

A woman reported that she had been walking her Pomeranian dog off-leash in the Anacortes Community Forest Lands when a coyote grabbed the dog and took off with it.  The dog was not seen again.   

An Anacortes man reported the theft of his wallet while he had been swimming at the Fidalgo Pool.  The man had left the wallet unsecured inside of a duffel bag in the men’s locker room.  The wallet contained the man’s ID and credit cards.  

An officer stopped a car driven by a 57-year-old Anacortes man after a witness reported that the driver was possibly drunk.  The officer then saw the car weaving in its lane of travel on M Avenue and then the car continued for several blocks even after the officer activated his lights and siren.  When the car finally stopped and the driver was asked for his license, he twice handed the officer an insurance card.  The man smelled strongly of alcohol, had slurred speech, and displayed other classic signs of intoxication.  The man said he had “two beers.”  The man also had a warrant for his arrest from a previous DUI in Anacortes.  He was taken into custody and transported to the police station where he performed poorly on field sobriety tests.  He provided breath samples that were over four times the legal limit.  He was booked into jail for DUI.        

An elderly couple from Anacortes received a telephone call from a man who claimed to be their grandson saying that he had been in an accident in Canada and that he needed money to pay for the other driver’s damage.  Another man then got on the phone and said that he was “helping” the grandson and that the couple needed to send a money-gram to Montreal but to not tell anyone the grandson had been involved in an accident.   After sending a money gram for over $3000, the couple spoke with their grandson and learned he had not been in an accident nor ever been to Canada.  When they tried to cancel the money gram, the couple learned it had already been picked up in Canada.  Another Anacortes resident received a similar phone call earlier in the week but did not send any money.   The public should be aware of similar scams.   

Wednesday, July 15

Officers responded to the report of a verbal altercation at a home in the 800 block of 7th Street.  They spoke with a man who said that his female friend had been drinking at his home and then gotten upset with him and left on foot.  The man said that he and the woman were only friends and that the disagreement had been strictly verbal.  The 20-year-old woman was contacted a few minutes later near Commercial Avenue.  The woman said that her friend had yelled at her, so she left.  The woman had watery eyes and smelled of intoxicants although she denied drinking.  The woman told the officer that she was wearing “alcohol smelling perfume.”  The woman displayed a variety of mood swings and she was placed under arrest for underage drinking.  The woman was issued a citation for MIP and taken to her home where she was released.  

Report of an overturned boat off the Cap Sante lookout occurred in the county and was handled by the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office.  

A woman living in the 2000 block of N Avenue reported that her ex-boyfriend and father of her children had threatened her while retrieving some of his property at the home.  The woman said that an argument had developed over what property the man was going to take, and that when the man was leaving he threatened to kill her.  The woman also reported that the man’s sister had accompanied him and that she had also threatened to kill the woman.  The incident is under further investigation.  

Officers responded to the Grandview Cemetery after 3 teenagers were reported to be breaking out windows on a building.  Officers contacted two Anacortes teens in the cemetery who said that it had been the third teen who had broken the two windows.  The third teen, a 15-year-old LaConner girl, was located at a relative’s home on Hillcrest Drive.  After initially denying breaking the windows, the girl said that she had just been looking through the glass when it broke.  When told that a witness had seen her punch the windows, the girl then said that she had punched the glass, but that she didn’t mean to break it.  She then admitted to throwing the broken glass onto the cemetery roadway.  The girl also smelled of alcohol and she admitted to drinking whiskey.  The girl was referred to juvenile court on charges of malicious mischief and underage drinking.  

An officer stopped a car driven by a 45-year-old Anacortes man in the 800 block of 31st Street for having a defective headlight.  The inside of the car smelled strongly of marijuana and the driver tried to tell the officer that the smell was from the gum he was chewing.  The man then admitted that he had marijuana and turned over a small amount to the officer.  The man was placed under arrest and a search of his car revealed two glass marijuana smoking pipes and another small container of marijuana.  The man was cited for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia and released.  

Thursday, July 16

An 84-year-old Anacortes man is suspected of shoplifting over $300 worth of merchandise from a downtown business.  A neighbor of the man became suspicious when the man started giving her items that he said he no longer wanted, but the neighbor noticed price tags on the items.  The neighbor gathered the items and went to the business and learned the items had come from the store.  A store employee said that the man had a habit of coming to the store on a daily basis and that employees had previously been suspicious of the man shoplifting.  It was learned that other downtown merchants also suspected the man of shoplifting.  Due to the age of the man, the store did not want to pursue criminal charges.  However, the police and Adult Protective Services will be looking at other options to deal with the man’s behavior.            

A boys BMX style bicycle valued at $100 was stolen from the backyard of a residence in the 800 block of 37th Street.  The bike had just been purchased the previous day as a birthday present for the reporting party’s son.  

A man residing in the 1100 block of 28th Street called police because his wife had allegedly been “drunk for 3 days” and was out of control.  The man reported that his 49-year-old wife had been begging passing cars to stop and take her to buy more alcohol.  The man said that he just wanted his wife to sober up.  The woman declined to go to a detox facility and “guaranteed” that she would go to bed and sleep it off.  However, a few hours later, the woman was suspected of attempting to shoplift beer from two different downtown area stores.  When asked why she had tried to steal the beer, the woman said that she was an “idiot” and that she wanted to die.  The woman was transported to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.     

A man living in the 3400 block of W. 5th Street reported that someone had just tried breaking into his house.  The homeowner said that he had been inside when he saw his air conditioner start to move in its window.  The homeowner said that when he went outside to investigate he saw an unknown man climbing over his gate.  The homeowner said that he chased the suspect and that when he caught up, the suspect threw several punches at him.  The suspect then fled into a thicket near Georgia Avenue.  A State Patrol trooper who arrived to assist in the search located the suspect and arrested him.  The homeowner identified the suspect as the man who had tried to get into his house.  The suspect was booked into jail for investigation of residential burglary. 

Friday, July 17

A resident of the 1300 block of 7th Street reported that some unknown juveniles had gotten into her car and rifled through the contents.  It did not appear as if anything had been stolen.  The woman also discovered that a large fountain had been knocked over and damaged.  The juveniles were not located.
