The Police Blotter, May 23, 2009

An officer stopped a car driven by a 23-year-old Burlington man who was driving approximately 75 miles per hour on T Ave. down the center of the roadway. The car traveled several more blocks after the officer activated his emergency lights and siren before finally stopping in the 700 block of 35th St. The man had a suspended driver’s license for unpaid tickets and was placed under arrest. The man smelled of alcohol and the officer discovered marijuana on the man during a search. The man failed a field sobriety test and was taken to the police station where he processed for DUI.  He provided two breath samples over the legal limit. The man was booked into jail for reckless driving, DUI, possession of marijuana, and driving while suspended.

Friday, May 15

A car stereo valued at $200 was stolen from the front dash board of an unlocked SUV parked in a driveway in the 3700 block of W. 7th Street. 

An unlocked car parked in front of a garage in the 1700 block of 7th Street was rifled through during the night, but nothing appeared to have been stolen.  The vehicle owner had heard footsteps outside of his home in the middle of the night, but did not investigate.     

A resident of the 4100 block of R Avenue reported that he discovered that someone had tampered with the gas cap on his car.  It did not appear that any gas had been siphoned, but the owner was concerned that something might have been poured into the gas tank. 

Saturday, May 16

An officer observed a 17-year-old Anacortes girl drive a vehicle occupied by other teens and an adult male into a grocery store parking lot and the man enter the store.  The man exited the store carrying beer and the vehicle dropped the man off at a downtown bar without the beer.  The officer stopped the car and learned that the unknown man had bought the beer for the teens.  The man left the bar prior to officer arrival.  As the girl was the driver of the vehicle and in constructive possession of the beer, she was referred to juvenile court for unlawful possession of alcohol. 

An officer stopped a car driven by a 19-year-old Concrete resident on W. 4th St. for speeding and not using its turn signal.  The man smelled of alcohol and admitted to having a couple of beers at a beach party.  After failing field sobriety tests, the man was arrested for drunk driving.  Three other teens who were passengers in the car also showed the effects of drinking and admitted to drinking alcohol.  They were all charged with underage drinking and released.  The driver was taken to the police station where he provided breath samples over the legal limit.  He was cited for DUI and released to a sober adult.

A chain saw carved smiling bear head with white fangs and a red tongue was reported stolen from the front of a house in the 2600 block of View Place.  The carving was valued at $500. 

An officer stopped a car driven by a 38-year-old Anacortes woman after it pulled out in front of another car on Oakes Avenue causing the other vehicle to brake abruptly and for having expired license tabs.  When the car came to a stop, it struck the curb and almost hit a mailbox on 13th St.  When the officer asked the woman for her license and insurance, she said that she didn’t know the location of her purse.  The officer saw that her purse was underneath her dog that was on her lap.  She then provided the information.  The woman smelled of alcohol and failed field sobriety tests although she claimed she had not been drinking.  She was arrested but she refused to take the breath test at the police station.  She was issued a citation for drunk driving and released to a sober friend.        

Sunday, May 17

A homeowner in the 800 block of 27th St. reported finding pry marks to a locked cabinet in his living room after coming back inside from mowing the lawn.  It did not appear that entry was gained into the cabinet and nothing appeared missing from the house. 

Monday, May 18

The mother of a 20-year-old Anacortes man called to report that her son had taken an overdose of medication prescribed to him.  When an officer arrived at the home in the 4000 block of W. 3rd St., the mother was trying to prevent the man from leaving.  The man appeared to be disoriented and confused and paramedics transported him to the emergency room for evaluation.

A single speed “Next” brand bicycle was reported stolen from outside of an apartment in the 1000 block of 24th Street.  The bike was valued at $60.  

The mother of a 14-year-old girl reported that the teen had run away from their home in the 800 block of 29th St.  The girl returned home later in the day and was fine.

Residents in the 2500 block of W. 2nd Street returned home and discovered that their house had been broken into and ransacked.  Upon closer inspection, the owners discovered they were missing two laptop computers, three .22 caliber pistols, and a Dyno BMX style bicycle.  The owners provided the names of two possible suspects and the matter is under continued investigation.

The police received numerous reports of a barefoot man speaking gibberish, blocking traffic, and exposing himself at the north end of Commercial Ave.  Officers contacted the 29-year-old man who possibly appeared to be under the influence of drugs.  The man’s feet were bleeding and he responded with gibberish to officer’s questions.  The man was taken into protective custody and taken to the emergency room for evaluation and treatment. 

An officer stopped a car driven by an 18-year-old Anacortes man for having a defective headlight.  The officer smelled the odor of burnt marijuana coming from inside of the vehicle and the driver admitted to having a marijuana pipe.  The officer located the pipe inside of the vehicle and the man confirmed that he had used it a couple of hours earlier to smoke marijuana.  The man was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia and he agreed to leave the car parked. 

Tuesday, May 19

An 18-year-old woman was counseled by an officer at her home in the 1500 block of O Ave. after her family called 911 to report that she was “out of control” and throwing things around the house while refusing to go to school.  The woman calmed down and it was determined that no crime had occurred. 

An Arlington woman reported that someone had dented the driver’s side door of her car while it had been parked in the 1300 block of 35th Street during the first week of May.  The offending party did not leave any information for the victim. 

A housing authority employee reported two women in a white van had dumped 6 bags of garbage and 4 boxes of pots and pans into a dumpster in the 900 block of 22nd St. without permission.  Attempts to locate the van were unsuccessful and the employee estimated that it would cost $75 to dispose of the unauthorized garbage.  

Four Anacortes teens ranging in ages from 13 to 15 were contacted at an abandoned house in the 3000 block of Q Ave. after witnesses heard glass breaking and saw the kids inside.  The officers also discovered a smoldering mattress inside of an outbuilding on the property.  The teens admitted to being inside of the house without permission and three of them admitted to breaking windows.  One teen said that he had lit a piece of paper on fire and then dropped it on the old mattress.  The teens were released to their parents and possible criminal charges are pending. 

Officers responded to the report of a physical fight involving several people outside of a home in the 1100 block of 8th St.  Officers learned that a woman and her mother had been involved in a disagreement over ownership of a dog with a man and his girlfriend.  Both sides claimed that the other side had started the altercation, and the violence included hitting, hair pulling, and scratching.  The City Prosecutor will review possible criminal charges after the involved parties return written statements.   

Wednesday, May 20

A vehicle prowl was reported to a car parked behind a house in the 1400 block of 12th St.  Reported missing were a laptop computer, a handheld “palm inventory,” a rolling briefcase, a hands-free device for a mobile phone, and a set of keys.  There was no sign of forced entry into the car although the owner said she believed the car had been locked. 

An unlocked pickup parked in the 2400 block of 13th St. was reported prowled during the previous night.  The owner said that he was missing approximately $40 in loose change.                 

A man living in the 3200 block of W. 2nd St. reported his car had been prowled and his wallet stolen.  The wallet contained approximately $15 in cash and the victim’s credit cards.  The victim believed that he had locked the car, but there was no sign of forced entry. 

A wallet belonging to a woman living in the 1100 block of F Ave. was found in an alley around the corner in the 2000 block of 10th St.  The woman said that the wallet had been left in her unlocked car parked in her driveway.  She reported that she was missing $15 from the wallet. 

Two tires were slashed on a car parked at a house in the 2200 block of 17th Street.  Replacement cost was estimated at $450.  The suspect was unknown. 

Thursday, May 21

A construction worker arriving for work discovered that someone had thrown a brick through a large plate glass window at a building under construction in the 1000 block of 27th St.  The damage was estimated at $300. 

A 19-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested on an outstanding warrant in the 1500 block of Commercial Ave.  However, due to jail overcrowding the jail would not accept her for booking and she was released. 

Officers contacted a 50-year-old homeless man in Washington Park after it was reported he was sleeping in the bushes.  He was given a courtesy ride by an officer back into town so he could make other sleeping arrangements.
