A 16-year-old Anacortes boy was apparently traveling too fast when he turned his car from Sunset Avenue onto Skyline Way in the last week. The boy lost control of the car and it rolled over. The boy was not injured but he received a ticket for “speeding too fast for conditions.”

Friday, May 1
A woman living in the 2000 block of Commercial Avenue reported that she had been bitten by a dog when she took her garbage out to the dumpster. The woman had not been injured, but had scrapes and puncture marks to the heel of her shoe. The offending dog was determined to be “Bubba” the Blue Heeler, who was owned by a man living out of his van in the area. The dog owner said that he had let the dog out of the van to relieve himself, and he expressed his surprise by saying that Bubba only usually bit the heels of people’s shoes. The dog owner was cited for having his dog running at large and for not having a dog license. The man was educated on City animal ordinances and the ordinance prohibiting living in a van on City streets.
A 45-year-old Anacortes man was issued a citation for violating a civil anti-harassment order after he allegedly made “eye contact” with a woman at her place of employment in the 2600 block of J Avenue. The order stated that the man could not come within 1,000 feet of the woman’s place of employment. The man said that he had been unaware that the woman worked at the location, and that he had turned around and left as soon as he saw her.
Three Fidalgo Pool patrons had items stolen from unlocked lockers in the men’s locker room. Two of the men were missing cash, and the other a cellular telephone. They provided a name of a possible suspect that they had seen in the locker room and said that one victim had some previous problems with the suspect. An officer later spoke with the 17-year-old suspect who denied any involvement in the thefts.
Officers responded to a report of a fight in the campground at Washington Park. Officers located 2 intoxicated brothers and learned that one of the brothers had gotten into a fight with their father who had also been drinking. The fight had reportedly stemmed from the son making a derogatory comment to the father about his boat engine “blowing up.” Officers were able to learn from other members of the Lake Stevens family at the scene that both the 57-year-old father and the 30-year-old son had been actively fighting with each other, but that the father was the primary aggressor. The son suffered a bloody nose and the father had lacerations to his face. The father was booked into jail for domestic violence assault.
A woman living in the 4000 block of Commercial Avenue reported that she had been assaulted by a 46-year-old Anacortes woman to whom she owed money. The victim said that the other woman had showed up at her house and knocked the victim to the floor when she opened the door. An officer spoke with the alleged suspect at her home and she denied having assaulted the woman or even going to her house. The City Prosecutor is reviewing the case for possible charges.
Saturday, May 2
A 51-year-old Alberta, Canada man was arrested for drunk driving after an officer stopped the car he was driving for repeatedly swerving out of its lane of travel on Commercial Avenue. The man had slurred speech, clumsy movements, admitted to having “three beers,” and performed poorly on field sobriety tests. During a search of the man incident to his arrest, the officer found a loaded handgun tucked into his pants. The man told the officer that he knew he was in trouble, but that he had “trust issues” with people and felt the need to carry a gun. The man was booked into jail on DUI and possession of a concealed pistol without a license charges. Immigration and Customs was also contacted and a federal detainer was put on the man.
A witness saw a 40-year-old Anacortes man steal 2 empty beer kegs from behind a bar in the 400 block of Commercial Avenue. The man put the kegs into the back of his pickup and drove away. An officer later spoke with the suspect who admitted to stealing the kegs because he wanted to use them to make a crab cooker. The man agreed to return the kegs, but he faces possible theft charges.
A man walking his dog reported finding suspicious pieces of galvanized pipe near the sidewalk in the 900 block of 4th Street. Inspection by an officer revealed that the pipes were not explosives, but rather just discarded pipe. The items were taken by the officer for disposal.
A 64-year-old Anacortes man was cited for misdemeanor theft after witnesses saw him take a bag of potato chips without paying for them from a store in the 1300 block of Commercial Avenue. The man initially denied being at the store, but when advised of the witnesses, he said he had been in the store but had put the chips back. Contrarily, a witness said that she had seen the man eating a similar bag of chips across the street shortly after the theft.
Officers received numerous reports of a Nissan pickup being “all over the road” and then located the vehicle in a parking lot in the 800 block of 28th Street. Officers identified the driver as a 33-year-old Anacortes man. A 19-year-old man was identified as a passenger. Two open beer cans were seen in the center console and the driver smelled of intoxicants. The driver had poor balance when exiting the car and he failed field sobriety tests. The driver was arrested for being in physical control of a motor vehicle while under the influence. His passenger also appeared to be intoxicated and he admitted to having a “few beers.” The passenger was cited for underage drinking. The driver was taken to the police station for processing where he provided breath samples that were almost twice the legal limit. He was cited and released to a sober adult.
Sunday, May 3
A 35-year-old Anacortes woman reported that her 41-year-old ex-boyfriend had punched her repeatedly in the face and head inside of a car parked in the 1100 block of 12th Street after she had failed in her attempt to lock him out of the car. The woman had visible injuries to her nose, mouth, and face. The woman said that she had tried to lock the man out of the car in an attempt to get away from him. The suspect was contacted outside of a house I the 1600 block of K Avenue where he admitted to “backhanding” the woman. The man was booked into jail for domestic violence assault.
Officers arrested a 15-year-old Anacortes boy at his home in the 2500 block of W. 2nd Street after he allegedly chest bumped and grabbed his mother after she had asked him to do some chores. The boy then allegedly threw his cell phone and broke it after his mother told him to give it to her as punishment. The boy also struggled with his mother’s boyfriend who had tried to intervene on the woman’s behalf. The boy was booked into juvenile detention for domestic violence assault and malicious mischief.
A Honda CRX had its side window broken out while it was parked in the 1500 block of Commercial Avenue. It did not appear that anything had been stolen from inside of the car. The damage was estimated at $250.
Officers responded to a domestic altercation in the 900 block of 23rd Street involving a 13-year-old boy and his 14-year-old sister. The boy had allegedly pushed his sister down some stairs causing visible bruising to her arms and legs. The boy admitted to pushing his sister at the top of the stairs. The mother of the kids said that there was a history of her son assaulting her daughter. Juvenile detention would not accept the boy for booking, but at the request of the family the boy was referred for assaulting his sister and will have to answer to a judge at a later date.
A computer with a flat screen monitor valued at $1200 and an office printer were reported stolen from the manager’s office at an apartment complex in the 1200 block of 24th Street. It appeared that a screwdriver type tool had been used to force open the door latch. The incident is under continued investigation.
An officer stopped a car for speeding on Sunset Avenue. The driver was identified as a 45-year-old Anacortes woman with 11-and 12-year-old children also in the car. The officer detected the odor of intoxicants on the woman’s breath. The woman had watery bloodshot eyes and she consented to a portable breath test that showed she was over the legal limit. She was placed under arrest for drunk driving. She was processed at the police station, cited for DUI, and released to a sober friend.
Monday, May 4
A 17-year-old Anacortes boy was referred to juvenile court on charges of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia after a high school official found a small amount of marijuana and a marijuana smoking pipe in the student’s computer bag. The boy had been taken to the school office after being seen acting suspiciously near the football field bleachers. The boy told an officer that he had purchased the marijuana the previous weekend and had already smoked a portion of it.
Officers responded to a verbal domestic disturbance in the 1700 block of 28th Street involving a woman and her 17-year-old son. The two had been arguing about the mother not wishing to discuss the boy’s desire to move out of the house. It was determined that no crime had occurred.
Officers spoke with a married couple at their home in the 4700 block of Yorkshire Drive after the wife locked the husband out of the house because he had been drinking. The wife said that her husband had shown up at his work intoxicated, and that she locked him out when he returned home. It was determined that no crime occurred and an officer transported the man to stay with a friend temporarily.
A resident of the 1600 block of 9th Street requested extra patrol of her neighborhood after she scared off 2 unknown men wearing hooded sweatshirts who were inside of her enclosed back yard in the middle of the night. The woman had been alerted by her dog barking.
Tuesday, May 5
A 19-year-old Anacortes transient was booked into jail on vehicle prowling and possession of stolen property charges after a witness observed the man acting suspiciously near cars that were discovered to have been prowled in the 1100 block of 23rd Street. The witness discovered that his wallet had been stolen from a vehicle and he followed the suspect to the 1000 block of 24th Street where officers made contact. The suspect admitted to prowling 2 vehicles and stealing a set of keys. The keys were recovered when the suspect led officers to where he had dumped them, and the victim’s wallet was also recovered from the suspect. The suspect also admitted to stealing the bicycle he had been riding on during the time he was prowling cars.
A 32-year-old Anacortes man is being investigated on possible false reporting charges after he allegedly called 911 and said that a resident had fired off a gun at a house in the 400 block of 36th Street while the caller had been trying to retrieve some tools. When officers arrived, both men were gone and it was learned that they both had active warrants for their arrest. A woman at the house told officers that the men had been arguing about property when the one man picked up a phone and started yelling “shots fired.” The woman said that the other man had just been standing there empty handed and that there had been no shots fired or even a gun involved. Officers spoke with two nearby workers who also said that they had not heard any gunshots.
The report of a physical fight involving 2 men in the area of 1100 block of 3rd Street was actually determined to be a verbal argument between a 19-year-old Anacortes man and his 18 year old girlfriend. The person reporting the incident told officers that he had seen the man yelling at someone inside of a car, and that the caller feared that there might be an assault. Both involved persons said that the disagreement had been verbal only and no crime had occurred.
Two men in a white pickup were reported to have been seen putting a mattress and box springs into a dumpster in the 500 block of T Avenue without permission. The dumpster fees are paid by a local housing authority. An officer stopped the pickup on M Avenue and they admitted to dumping the mattresses. The driver was cited for driving with a suspended driver’s license and the men agreed to retrieve the mattresses or be charged with theft of services.
A 15-speed mountain bike was reported stolen from where it had been left unlocked and unattended in the 600 block of Commercial Avenue. The bike was valued at $100.
An 18-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for domestic violence assault in the 1600 block of 25th Street after her allegedly came up behind his father and put him into a “choke hold.” The 2 men had reportedly been arguing about the son’s refusal to take his medication for a mental health condition. The father had tried to walk away from the son when the son allegedly grabbed him around the neck. The son admitted to threatening and assaulting his father, but he said that his father had threatened to hurt him first. The son was booked into jail.
Wednesday, May 6
Someone entered an unlocked car parked in the 2000 block of 9th Street and stole a pair of prescription sunglasses valued at $100.
A 19-year-old Burlington man was cited for misdemeanor assault after he allegedly threw a woman off the porch at a house in the 800 block of 27th Street. The man had reportedly arrived at the house to retrieve some property, but then became upset when he saw his ex-girlfriend with her new boyfriend. The victim, who was friend of the ex-girlfriend, stepped outside to calm the man, but he allegedly grabbed her by the shoulders and threw her off the porch. The victim also said that the man had punched her in the ribs. The man said that he “had lost it” when he observed his ex’s new boyfriend, but he said that he had only thrown the other woman off the porch as a reaction to her trying to push him off the porch. The man denied punching the victim.
Thursday, May 7
A 34-year-old Anacortes man was cited for violating a domestic violence protection order after allegedly asking a friend to pass a message to his former girlfriend. A court order prohibited the man from contacting the woman, even through a third party. The man admitted to speaking with his friend about the relationship, but denied having asked him to contact his ex-girlfriend.
A 42-year-old Anacortes man suffered a leg injury when the vehicle he was driving failed to stop for a stop sign on 9th Avenue, traveled across Q Avenue, and struck a tree. It appeared that the driver had suffered a possible seizure.
A 45-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested for domestic violence assault after she allegedly grabbed her roommate by the neck and pushed her into a bedroom. The victim had obtained a no-contact order against the suspect, but the order had not yet been served. The suspect had become upset when the victim informed her of the no-contact order. The suspect admitted to pushing her roommate, but said only because her roommate had pushed her first. The suspect was booked into the county jail.
An Anacortes woman reported that she had either lost her wallet or it had been stolen while she had been shopping in the downtown area. The wallet contained the woman’s driver’s license, credit cards, and approximately $130 in cash.
Friday, May 8
An attempted burglary was reported to a business located in the 700 block of R Avenue. The owner found the front door had been scraped and dented, and that the lock mechanism had a piece of metal broke off inside of it in an apparent attempt to get the door to open without a key. Entry into the building was not made.
