Friday, April 24
Five juveniles who took a shopping cart from a business in the 1700 block of Commercial Avenue were contacted at the skate park and agreed to return the cart and apologize for their behavior.
An 18-speed mountain bike valued at $250 was reported stolen from in front of the main entrance to an inn located in the 900 block of 20th Street.
An Acme resident reported that his Honda Civic had been stolen from where it had been left parked on Cabana Way while he was working in the islands. The victim said that he had left the car locked and that no one had permission to take it. Two days after it was reported stolen, the car was located by police in Bellingham after it had been set on fire. The car owner was notified, but further details of the fire are unknown.
A car parked in the 2000 block of L Avenue was discovered to have its rear window broken out by having a traffic cone thrown against it. The damage was estimated at $400. Investigation revealed 3 juvenile boys as possible suspects and the matter is under investigation.
Saturday, April 25
Officers contacted several teenagers that were standing around 2 cars that were parked late at night near a fence at Whitney School. There was concern as one of the teens was lying on the ground. The person on the ground was found to be fine, but 3 of the teens smelled of alcohol and showed other effects of drinking including providing positive portable breath test samples. A 17-year-old Anacortes boy, a 16-year-old Anacortes girl, and a 17-year-old Mount Vernon girl were all arrested for underage drinking. The teens were released to their parents and will be charged through juvenile court.
A 22-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for violating an anti-harassment order after he and a 16-year-old Anacortes girl were identified as passengers in a car that had been stopped by police. The girl was the protected person in the court order, and the man was not supposed to have contact with her. He was also arrested for having a warrant for suspended driving. He was booked into jail.
A mailbox was reported to have been knocked off its post in the 3600 block of W. 3rd Street. One other mailbox in the neighborhood was also found damaged.
A Burlington couple reported a hit and run to their car while it had been parked in a business lot in the 900 block of Commercial Avenue. The passenger door sustained a large dent and the impact damaged the interior locking mechanism to the door. The suspect vehicle is unknown.
A 45-year-old man was contacted in his driveway in the 900 block of G Avenue after it was reported he was yelling at someone and acting strange. The man made some bizarre statements and was aggressive towards officers and it was learned that he was off his medication. He was taken into protective custody and taken to the emergency room for evaluation.
The report of a suspicious vehicle at Storvik Park that had been covered in shrink wrap was found to be a birthday prank on the car’s driver. The car was undamaged and there was no crime.
A 31-year-old Burlington woman suffered possible back injuries and was later airlifted to Harborview Medical Center after the car she was driving went down an embankment off Highway 20 near R Avenue and rolled over. The car was found resting on the driver’s side. Witnesses said that the car had swerved in its lane, crossed the shoulder, and then went down the embankment. The driver told an officer that she had been drinking prior to the accident and that she had “over corrected” when she had changed lanes. She consented to a blood draw and possible charges of drunk driving are possible pending analysis of her blood.
Sunday, April 26
A resident of the 1100 block of K Avenue reported that his 17-year-old son had returned home intoxicated and then assaulted him after he confronted the boy. The boy allegedly struck his father several times with a closed fist and then wrestled with his father when he tried to call 911. The boy also reportedly threw the phone away from his father and threw another phone against a window causing the glass to break. The father said that his son followed him outside where he attempted to break the man’s car window before leaving on foot. The boy faces charges of domestic violence assault and interfering with the reporting of domestic violence when he is located.
Officers spoke with a 24-year-old Anacortes woman after receiving a report that the woman was possibly going to harm herself. The woman was upset over a pending separation from her husband, but she said that she had no intention of harming herself. The woman said that she had an upcoming appointment with her counselor and that she would call for help if she believed that she was of harm to herself.
Officers admonished an 18-year-old Anacortes man after a passing motorist saw the man drop his pants and “moon” traffic that was passing by a house on 12th Street. The teen explained that he was mooning a friend and didn’t realize that anyone else saw him. He was encouraged to keep his pants on or stay inside of the house.
A 26-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for domestic violence assault after he allegedly assaulted his wife at their home in the 4400 block of Oakes Avenue. The man admitted that he and his wife had been arguing and that he had pushed her with a case to a hunting bow and his free hand. His actions resulted in his wife being pushed over backwards and her trying to call 911. The man also confirmed his wife’s account that he had unplugged the phone when she had tried to call 911. He was booked into jail for assault and interfering with the reporting of domestic violence.
A 25-year-old Anacortes man was cited for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia after he admitted that a wooden box that contained marijuana and a marijuana smoking pipe belonged to him. The box had been found inside of the center console of the man’s vehicle when officers were searching it after arresting the passenger for a previous domestic violence offense.
Monday, April 27
Graffiti was discovered on a recycling dumpster behind a business in the 1000 block of 7th Street. The writing was similar in style to other graffiti found in the downtown area.
A car driven by an 89-year-old Anacortes man swerved in the roadway and struck a parked car in the 1400 block of M Avenue. The driver was unhurt, but he was cited for negligent driving.
Walkers on the Tommy Thompson Trail reported a man on a bicycle had ridden past them and used an angry tone to call them profane names. The walkers provided a description of the man that matched the description of a cyclist who was suspected in previous derogatory and profane behavior towards women on the trail. The suspect, a 58-year-old Anacortes man, had previously been warned by officers that any future disorderly behavior would result in criminal charges. An officer then contacted the man at his home and he admitted to yelling at the walkers because they “were not following the rules.” The man was issued a citation for disorderly conduct for not following the rules of good behavior.
A patron of the library discovered a discarded marijuana smoking pipe on the library grounds. The pipe was turned over to the police for disposal.
Tuesday, April 28
A woman called 911 to report that her ex-boyfriend was refusing to leave her home in the 2000 block of K Avenue after he had dropped off their child. The woman reported that when she told the man she was going to call the police if he didn’t leave, he threw the phone against a wall and shattered it. The man later telephoned the police but would not disclose his location. He did admit to shattering the telephone. The man also said that he would come to the police station the following day to provide a statement. Possible domestic violence charges are pending.
Officers spoke with a 38-year-old Anacortes man at his home on K Avenue about him possibly being suicidal. The man said that he was having family problems, but that he felt better after speaking with a crisis line worker on the phone. The man was offered resource information and a family member also arrived to assist the man.
An officer stopped a car in the 2900 block of Oakes Avenue after watching the vehicle repeatedly swerve out of its lane of travel, including almost going off the roadway. The driver was identified as a 36-year-old Anacortes man who smelled strongly of alcoholic beverages and had slow and clumsy movements. He performed poorly on field sobriety tests including providing a portable breath test that was over three times the legal limit. He was placed under arrest, processed, and cited for drunk driving. The man told the officer that he had “just been out having a couple of beers and look what it’s doing to me.”
Thursday, April 30
A 25-year-old Port Angeles man was found to have a bloody lip and some facial scratches when officers spoke with him after responding to the report of a possible fight in the area of the 5800 block of Rosario Way. Officers also spoke with a 24-year-old Anacortes man who was walking with the victim when contacted. The men would only say that they had been at a party where a lot of drinking had been going on and that some type of altercation had taken place that resulted in the Anacortes man pulling the other man out of the house. The men offered conflicting stories and did not want to pursue the matter.
Graffiti was located on recycling bins near a business in the 500 block of Commercial Avenue. Again, it was similar to other graffiti found in the downtown area.
A resident of the 800 block of 6th Street reported that he had witnessed a female in a white van attempt to steal a flower pot from his yard. The victim confronted the woman, got the flower pot back, and obtained a license number for her vehicle. The officer then contacted the 35-year-old Anacortes woman at her home. The woman initially said that she had just been looking at the pot, but then admitted to taking it to her van. She told the officer that the man had gotten it back and it “wasn’t any big deal.” The woman asked the officer, “What are you going to do, arrest me?” Her question was answered when the officer issued her a citation for theft.
A 17-year-old Anacortes girl reported that her 21-year-old boyfriend was “missing” because she had not heard from him since the previous day when he went to Mount Vernon to visit his former girlfriend and visit other friends. The man reportedly did not have a permanent address and he has taken off in the past. The woman did not want to file a missing person report at that time. The police are also interested in the man’s whereabouts as he has a warrant for his arrest.
Friday, May 1
A resident of the 2800 block of 17th Street heard a loud noise and discovered a truck had gone over an embankment and gotten stuck on some rocks on his property. The homeowner contacted 2 teenaged males who refused to identify themselves and one of the boys took off running when the homeowner went to call the police. The ID of a 17-year-old boy was found in the truck which led the officer to his house on Dundee Place. The officer saw the teen walk up and go into his house, but the boy’s mother lied and said the boy wasn’t home. When informed that the officer intended to apply for a search warrant, the boy eventually came outside but only after the officer had to listen to a profane tirade from the boy’s family. The boy reeked of alcohol and was placed under arrest for underage drinking. The boy admitted to drinking and fleeing the accident scene and it was also learned he had a suspended license from a previous underage drinking conviction. He was referred to juvenile court.
