The Disgrace of Misinformation, Conclusion

To conclude this series, here are ten actions consumers can take to regain their health:

  • If wanting to change eating and/or lifestyle habits, one needs to implement a behavior modification program which includes changing both thought processes and behaviors.  A registered dietitian and/or therapist can be of assistance.
  • Make a lifelong commitment to health.  It’s not about being perfect; it’s about making healthy decisions as often as possible to where it becomes second nature to make the right choices.
  • Self-efficacy: belief in yourself is key.  Be aware of your thoughts: are your thoughts generally supportive or defeating?  Having a healthy relationship with yourself translates to a healthy relationship with food.
  • Make a commitment to physical activity (with a doctor’s approval).  Regular exercise is vital to our quality of life.  You don’t have to run a marathon; a simple thirty minute walk on most days will noticeably improve your health.
  • I’ve said this before, but I cannot stress it enough: make more meals from scratch.
  • Turn off the television and any other electronic devices while eating your meals.
  • Take a cooking class to rekindle your appreciation of food.
  • Volunteer for an organization that aligns with your values, such as a soup kitchen.  Service to others is good for the heart and soul.
  • Reconnect with yourself.  When was the last time you thought about your goals or your wishes?  Are you living the life you want?
  • Nourish your soul.  Meditate, walk in nature, or read a poem.  Having time to reflect gives us clarity.

I have enjoyed writing this series.  Be well.
