City tries to save historic building

The wooden building at 1814 Commercial Ave., built before 1910, was among properties purchased recently and is slated for demolition, unless the city can find a place for it, according to Museum Director Steve Oakley.

The buyers of the property plan on keeping the building that housed Dave’s Anaco Appliance and the building between Dave’s and 1814, which currently houses CompuMatter.

The 1814 building has housed a variety of businesses, including a hardware store once known as Shumway Hardware, a plumbing and heating store and a real estate office.

Oakley said the city has identified parcels that could house the building, but factors such as power lines and overhead traffic signals are in the way. One such parcel could be next to the Depot. A move could cost as  much as $25,000 to lift the building off its foundation and put it on wheels. Other costs would involve fixing the ultimate location to site the building on.
