Gere takes strong lead over Maxwell

Gere said the first thing she’ll do once she is sworn in is to spend 90 days getting to know the city, the departments and the managers. And, “I’ll open the doors to City Hall and invite everyone in,” she said at a campaign party at Gere-a-Deli, her restaurant.

Maxwell, who has been in office 20 years, lagged in the primary, coming in second to Gere. That vote, perhaps, prompted him to pick up his campaign activity since then. He was reportedly at a private party Tuesday night.

In Council races, businessman Matt Miller, now on the Planning Commission, took a sizable early lead over Andrea Doll. Liz Lovelett took 67-percent of the vote in her race against incumbent Council member Bill Turner. And, businessman Johnny Archibald is easily beating Brandon Robinson. Incumbent Council member Erica Pickett, unchallenged, will return to the Council.

In one other hotly-contested race, Lynne Lang has a narrow 51-percent to 48-percent lead over Warren Tessler for Island Hospital Commissioner, position 4.

The next election count is not expected until end of the day on Wednesday.
