Temporary span could be in place next month

Stete officials showed what the temporary fix would look like. Governor Jay Inslee said, “We will install a temporary span on the bridge that will restore traffic while we build a safe and durable permanent span adjacent to it.”

The temporary span will consist of two 24-foot-wide structures that will be pre-built and trucked to the site. With that width, the four driving lanes will be narrower than the current lanes, so speed would be reduced at the bridge. Meanwhile, oversize loads or vehicles won't be allowed on the temporary span.

Inslee said the plan, "minimizes the closure time and keeps clear access to popular Skagit County retail business and destinations including the Anacortes ferry terminal."

With a temporary span in place, work on a permanent replacement span will be undertaken from a work platform just west of the bridge. When the permanent span is completed, it will be rolled into place and the temporary span removed.
