The $43,000 settlement package closes a $48,000 penalty filed against the company last year for hazardous waste violations. The company has corrected the violations cited in the original penalty. The Anacortes yacht builder will pay Ecology $18,000 and provide $25,000 for the boat project with $10,000 of that amount devoted to instruction on proper hazardous waste management.
“This innovative settlement will provide multiple benefits to the community,” said K Seiler, who manages Ecology’s Hazardous Waste and Toxics Reduction program. “Students will receive expert mentoring through the fiberglass boat making process and the city will acquire a needed piece of equipment. Another benefit of this settlement is proper hazardous waste handling training for the next generation of Washington workers.”
New World will supply materials and expert training in the design and construction of a 15-foot runabout hull. Beyond the settlement’s terms, the company will help the city and college procure the boat’s motor and fittings.
The Anacortes Parks and Recreation Department plans to use the vessel for safety patrols and as a support boat for the city’s youth boating program.
The boat project is expected to take approximately a year to complete. Students at the college’s Marine Maintenance and Technology program in Anacortes will work on various stages of construction, in boat building classes over the next few academic quarters.
