City unveils plans to rebuild intersection

The $250,000 project will include a complete re-build of the intersection with concrete paving replacing the current asphalt. City Engineering Technician Gunnar Christiansen said, "As the cost of oil goes up, the cost of asphalt pavement increases, making concrete, which lasts twice as long, more competitive in cost."

The project design includes:

  • 6-foot wide sidewalks
  • ADA compliant sidewalk ramps
  • Colored concrete pedestrian crossings
  • Reduced roadway width leading up to the intersection.
  • Wider curb radius for larger vehicle turns
  • Cement concrete intersection
  • 11-wide driving lanes
  • 5-foot wide bicycle lanes with new reflective roadway striping
  • New LEO streetlights
  • New street signage with increased reflectivity.

The Public Works Engineering Department has worked diligently to obtain 30% completion of
the construction plans.

During the construction phase of the project, which should take place in the summer of 2013, shortly after the Middle School is out for the summer, will be closing the intersection to traffic to enable a timely construction schedule. During this time, vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians will be detoured around the project. Temporary traffic signs will be installed to help direct folks around the project.
