The city contracted with Mount Vernon designer Brand Query to design the new signs with a common theme.
Wayfinding is defined as, "signs, maps, and other graphic or audible methods used to convey location and directions to travelers."
Brand Query surveyed the city and identified dozens of potential locations for new wayfinding signs and ran those locations by city officials.
Brand Query President Jacque Beamer said the signs will point to commonly searched-for locations, but will not include Forest Lands destinations such as lakes because, she said, "Forest officials did not feel they had adequate space or parking to accommodate more people."
City Council member Cynthia Richardson said, at a recent City Council meeting, "This is an initial list. Once we have these up, we'll have a second round where people realize they've missed a place."

Brand Query also designed 3 versions of what amounts to a Welcome to Anacortes sign with room for service club plaques. They could be placed at common entrances to the city.
The city will make the signs and will post them in stages, beginning by the end of this year.
