Lytton, who is President of the Anacortes School Board, leads with 55% of the vote (19,072 votes), to Republican Mike Newman's 45% (15,311 votes). Incumbent Morris, with 19,012
votes, leads Republican John Swapp, with
15,426
votes, by the same margin, with about 34,000 votes counted.
Lytton, from Anacortes, and Morris, from Mount Vernon, trailed their opponents in Skagit County, but both Lytton and Morris had overwhelming leads in Whatcom and San Juan counties. The 40th District includes parts of Skagit and Whatcom counties as well as all of San Juan County.
In the Sheriff's race, Democrat Will Reichardt has taken a solid lead over Republican Herb Oberg, 56% to 44%. And, Democrat incumbent County Commissioner Sharon Dillon is trailing Republican Mike Anderson by less than 100 votes.
Skagit County's glacially slow vote count is expected to continue for days, with the next vote count not expected until Wednesday afternoon. A substantial number of ballots remain to be counted.
