Marine trades scholarship available

Beginning this fall, students in the program will have the opportunity to learn at the new Northwest Career and Technical Academy Marine Technology Center in Anacortes.

The program formerly was at the college’s campus in Oak Harbor. All program equipment has been transferred to the new center.

“With the opening of the NCTA Marine Technology Center, the timing is right for a new scholarship that will benefit marine trades employers in the Northwest,” said Carl Young, interim director of the foundation. “Employers look for a highly skilled workforce to achieve economic success, and we are pleased provide support to help meet this need.”

Students in the marine maintenance technology program pay about $3,925 per year for tuition, books, tools and certification fees. For many who want a career in the marine trades, covering the cost of training for two years is an obstacle, making the new scholarship even more important.

Skagit Valley College’s marine maintenance technology program is a member of the Marine League of Schools and is one of only five schools in the United States to offer the top-rated American Boat and Yacht Council certified training. Currently, there are eight ABYC certifications offered at Skagit Valley College:

  • Composite boat builder certification
  • Diesel engine and support systems certification
  • Gasoline engine and support systems certification
  • Electrical certification
  • Marine corrosion certification
  • Refrigeration and A/C certification
  • Marine systems certification
  • ABYC standards certification

The Skagit Valley College Foundation is currently seeking scholarship donations for marine maintenance technology students, with the goal of raising $20,000 by the end of October.

These critical funds will encourage deserving students to complete the two-year certification program. Graduates are routinely employed in boat-repair companies throughout the Northwest. Scholarship donor names will be displayed in the NCTA Marine Technology Center in Anacortes and will receive public recognition at open house events.
