Trestle repair work nears completion

Bob Baggs, who is coordinating the volunteers, said they are advancing about 15 feet per day. Volunteers are being used to haul the materials out to where more experienced construction crews working for Strandberg, Shell and Tesoro are place the deck planks in place.

Baggs says he's drawing from a pool of about 40 volunteers, with a half-dozen working at any one time. As crews put planks in place, they are also adding posts for the railings.

Baggs said the new planks are better and will last longer than the original planks. The new ones are stronger than the original planks, which were made of recycled materials. Some of those plans have broken.

A large section of the trestle was badly damaged by a fire last October. The cause of the fire has never been determined and remains a puzzle for Anacortes Police.
