The large Romanesque Revival structure build in 1892 at 19th St. and J Ave. reflected the pride and optimism of the boom years in Anacortes. The Columbian School was name for the World's Columbian Exposition, the influential Chicago world's fair marking the 400th anniversary of Columbus' arrival in the New World. The school initially served all grades but in 1931 became the junior high after construction of a new high school. This handsome building was demolished in the mid-1960s.
This is the first in a series based on a new set of Anacortes Heritage signs placed in several locations in Anacortes. The purpose of these signs is to increase awareness of and appreciation for the unique heritage of our community and the need to preserve it. Partners in the project are: Anacortes Historic Preservation Board, Anacortes Museum & Maritime Center, Anacortes Parks & Recreation Department.
