The crew, working under contract to the Port of Anacortes, started moving the building around 3am and had the building in place at the temporary storage lot by 4:30am. They had to saw down one of the trees along Q Ave. to make the move. But, the Port had already had an agreement with the city to replace any trees they had to remove.
The crew moved the building along Seafarers' Way to Q Ave., then with some delecate maneuvering, turned onto Q, then onto did a jog onto 14th St., then turned into the gravel lot which has, in the past, been available for storing boat trailers.
The move was made as part of the environmental cleanup of the former Scott Paper Mill site just south of Cap Sante Marina. The move cost the port $150,000, but one Port employee called it a "deal," becuase the alternative was to put pilings under the building to allow the removal of the contaminated soil at a cost of at least $1 million.
The building is slated to be moved back at the end of the 2-year cleanup operation, but the Anacortes Small Boat Center group wants the building for a small boat center. If the Port donates it for that purpose, it would be moved to a new location at the northeast corner of Cap Sante Marina.
