The Seafarers' Memorial Park building, now behind construction fencing, could become part of a planned small boat center.

There may be life left in the Seafarers' Memorial Park building, which needs to be moved from its current location as part of the current toxic waste cleanup now under way in the area south of Cap Sante Marina and between the shoreline and Q Ave.

Currently, the building sets behind the fenced area of the cleanup operation, but it could get moved to the north end of the marina to become part of a proposed small boat center. A non-profit group, the Anacortes Small Boat Center, hopes to convince the Port to donate the building for a small boat center.

The group has scheduled an architectural design meeting with city and port officials for Thursday, Sept. 10. The public is invited to attend the 6:30 pm meeting at the Anacortes Yacht Club.

Founding member Michele Pope said "The goal of obtaining small boat access to Fidalgo Bay is closer than ever," thanks to the cooperation of the port and the city.

Through the group's efforts, the port has already cleared an area at the northeast corner of Cap Sante Marina for small boat activities, including the addition of a hoist to get small boats in the water.

The building sits on a concrete foundation and some local folks wonder if the Port's contractors can actually disconnect the building from the concrete pad and move the building somewhere and still have it intact and useable. The Port has confidently said 'sure, we can move it."
