Assistant City Engineer Eric Shjarback says he hopes to be able to open the roundabout late Friday, possibly early in the evening. He acknowledged that work, such as landscaping, won't be done by then, but the longer he can keep contractors working without any traffic, the better.
SRV Construction of Oak Harbor won the contract at $918,000. Had they finished work early they would have been in line to get a bonus for each day ahead of schedule. The roundabout was funded by the city and a grant of $500,000 from the state Transportation Improvement Board.
Owners of businesses south of 32nd St., the detour route, will be happy. They have reported a sharp drop in sales in the past month or so. However, a visit to The Store, south of the roundabout construction and a long detour from town, found only a handful of muffins left on Sunday afternoon. An employee there said they have found a lot of people coming to The Store just because they knew business was down.
