12" Water main break (updated)

Public Works staffer Sandi Andersen said they got a call at around 11:30 Wednesday night and discovered a 14-foot by 10-foot section of roadway had broken open, gushing water onto the street. After digging into the pavement and much, the city crew discovered a 7-foot long crack that 'kinda' wrapped around the 12 inch ductile iron pipe.

Andersen said water service was restored to nearby businesses before they opened Thursday morning. After laying a temporary patch on the street, the city will hire a contractor to do a permanent patch, probably next week, she said.

Andersen said she didn't know how old that section of pipe is. She said the crew was surprised to see the crack in ductile pipe because it's supposed to be stronger than the older asbestos-concrete pipes.
